There were some set-up options that were NOT available through the remote control (and not documented) and had to stumble upon how to set up the HDMI inputs. Once set up, it works well and sounds great.

[...].I am moving from a Pioneer that is around 4 years old. Needed the HDMI connectivity with good video scaling features....researched for a long time. This sony receiver gets you the best bang for the buck with more than enough features to last for some time. SetupAuto Calibration worked like a charm. It set the speaker distances and the levels almost perfect. I did do some manual set up to set the crossover points to get the sound I like. It has a lot of presets and EQ settings which when tweaked actually make a difference. Night mode is a good option. Also has extensive features that can be accessed using the GUI menu on the TV. The speaker menu especially has a very good gui. Power This unit had midrange power, probably pushes close to 40-50rms per channel when fully driven which i almost did..went upto -5db on the volume setting and it was ear splitting loud when watching Master and Commander. Music in 2 channel mode you will get more power. There is also option to bi amp front speakers. For in home listening this one has got more than enough juice for a large living room, If you need theater level sound (which is true 80-100 watts/channel...god help your ears!!) you can always add an amp later and use this as a pre amp. SoundThe sound is very pleasing..almost neutral...definitely need to check your subwoofer settings once auto cal is done as this unit is a bit bass heavy. Once callibrated music listening was a pleasure and the movie viewing experience was mind blowing, my surrounds came alive once the autocal was finished. The fight sequences in Master and Commander DTS tracks sounded extreme, need to revisit all my movies again. VideoThe one main feature that tilted the balance in favor of this unit against all competing units was the video performance. Sending all signals to my TV using one cable is a blessing.... Component video upscaling to 1080p for my wii works flawlessly, games look great now. Upscaling of direct tv SD channels is also great, much better picture quality than the comparable Onkyo models (SR707,SR706 and SR806) and yamaha models (RX-v765, v-665)Pros - Setup Gui, autocal, ease of connectivity and also customizable names and input selectionsCons - If i were to be critical and pick on something it would that the Peak Power compared to competition (especially Yamaha) is a bit lacking...maybe 5-10 watts lesser, but this is usable only in extreme cases.... for me with a LCD TV the Video performance more than makes up for this.Overall - Amazing all round receiver with all the bells and whistles needed for a medium to large HT room.

I like everything about the receiver so far, except for the fact that it has two command modes for remote controls. I am forced to choose between my Sony Blu-Ray player remote being able to control volume or my Tivo remote. I know of no way for both to work. Tivo only works with AV System 1 and the Blu-Ray remote only works with AV System 2. There is no easy way to switch command modes (switching requires holding down multiple buttons on the receiver while turning it on and doing the same with the receiver remote). The receiver remote has some Blu-Ray functions, but not all (e.g. not Time, Audio, Subtitle, Display, etc....). I am guessing that other components besides Tivo would have the same trouble. Too bad Sony does not make Tivo hardware.

Good overall, especialy making it easy to operate when connected to a sony TV and BD, but images on non HD cable channels is actualy worse that connecting the cable box directly to the TV...

Comments about SONY STRDA2400ES - 7.1 Channel Reciever:
The unit is the main AV component for my home theater. I stay with Sony because of dependability and inter connectivity. This unit offers both BUT is difficult to set up to make it easy for people who can't handle four remotes. I finally accomplished my goal. It took 6 hours spread across three days.
I love it. I do not regeret the decision.
One glaring negative, the Sony easy connect spreaker connections are horrible - I mean Sony should be embarassed. I finally bought Monster banana connectors and saved myself countless HOURS of frustration. Just admit it will be an extra expense and you'll be happier from the start. Sony - get real. You would have to have Japanese brain surgeon sized hands to use you're "easy connect" speakers connections.
But then, in the final analysis it does what I want and sounds great.
Remember buy the banana plugs!

Let me preface by saying I walked into my purchase wanting to buy a Sony - right or wrong. STRDA2400ES has solid power, flexible set-up of volume & tones for each speaker, user-friendly GUI thru tv and a very reasonable price given all it has to offer. My father could set it up - probably not mom, but she's had a cell phone for 5 years and still can't send text messages. (Sorry mom, still love you.)

Comments about SONY STRDA2400ES - 7.1 Channel Reciever:
This was the easiest A/V Receiver I've ever set up. It's pretty much plug and play. The sound quality is solid and every bit as good as a receiver that cost's twice as much. I've really not been able to find any negatives with this unit. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that the remote is not the easiest to read or the most ergonomic to use. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this receiver!

Comments about SONY STRDA2400ES - 7.1 Channel Reciever:
Sony states in their literature that all video sources are upconverted/upscaled to 1080p. I had 2 Sony techs on the phone and I even had an email from their tech department stating I could increase the resolution to 1080p with my standard def cable using HDMI inputs and outputs. I wanted to make sure [...]. I spent 2 days on the phone with Sony before I was left feeling lied to. Now I need to clutter my setup with component cables in order to increase the resolution of my video. HDMI is the standard. I was told by Sony that none of their products will increase the resolution of a less than 1080i/p signal using HDMI inputs. Expensive mistake.
