bought this for use as home theater receiver to replace an aging adcom pre-amp/tuner & separate amps. this receiver, for the price, is about as versatile as one could hope for. actually, it's 7.2 surround (2 subwoofers, that is) with a 2nd zone-2 channel stereo-for another pair of speakers (like in another room) with their own controls. basic setup is fairly simple, advanced is more technically demanding. but this receiver has so many options, we will prolly never get the full use of every one of them as they are intended, as it is loaded with all the latest decoders. but for a mid-priced receiver, couldn't be happier. we have yet to find a noticable weakness in it.

Comments about YAMAHA RXV863 735 Watt 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver w/ FREE 3 YR Extended Warranty:
I bought this unit to serve as stereo receiver not in a home theater system. I used the additional amps to bi-amp my speakers. There is a setting on the unit that allows the rear speakers to be used as a bi-amp channel. However, the manual is not clear how to best set up the receiver in a stereo system. The manual is primarily focused on home theater usage.

This is my third Yamaha receiver. I have to keep replacing receivers as technology changes. The receiver sounds great and was easy to set up. The worst thing is the volume control. It is shown as db and turning it doesn't always result in the effect you want. You can turn it when watching a DVD and the sound remains constant. I have read the entire manual and don't see this covered. The next option is a call to Yamaha. If you research this model you will find the volume is a constant complaint. The speaker setup with the microphone was great. I like the scene features on the receiver. So far, I haven't had much time to play with it except watching movies.

I'm an old audiophile and still have my LP's and cassettes. This works for me, except it takes me too long to fine tune speaker balance and equalizer settings. But that function is far better than the Denon AVR 2700 I replaced with this Yamaha. My wife and kids get upset because I'm playing with the sound enhancement functions and speaker balance during movies. It's a great system overall. I'll be adding the Bluetooth receiver soon. The iPod dock is not compatible with the new iPhone, so I'll stick with Bluetooth. I have it setup with my 6 year old 65" Pioneer Elite with an OPPO DVD HDMI, but the video won't up convert with my Component cable monitor. My Samsung 1080P 40"ers are in other rooms with the other up-converting OPPO DVDs.(I'll have to wait to try this units up-convert ability!) The RXV-861 had good reviews, so I thought I'd benefit paying up to this model for that feature. [...]
