Comments about TASCAM SSCDR1 - Recorder Solid State with CDR:

I owned an earlier Tascam Pocket Studio 5 and consider this my mega upgrade. Whereas before I could only use CF cards that were 128 MB now I can go up to 8GB-SAY WHAT! The ability to record .WAVs is a plus as well.

On the CD side of things, I am familiar with Tascam CD-Rs from working in Radio. Recording straight to CD is awesome if you don't want to deal with Hard Drives and firewire-So long as your mixing ears are tight-the built in Compressor is a help. The "Hard" compressor setting is a little too hard.

The auto track function which carries over to this model comes in handy if you are using it for dubbing applications. Conversely The auto track sucks if you have a Dramatic pause in a song-however this function is activated by preference.

Tying this all together is the ability to convert CF to CD and to Rip CD to CF. This is a huge help to some one who is constantly converting audio. Adding to that is the SPDIF I/O which I am using a 7pin cable to convert all my old DATs to CF for Archive, and my Master DATS to CD for lossless audio (kinda-48000Dat to 44100CD). I love it-but I don't love Tascams inspection fee if this thing breaks-Get the warranty!

There are some advanced operations on this thing though so I don't reccommend it to a consumer based gear head, maybe try Tascams other CDRWSL900's.
