It looks as nice as it sounds. The sound imaging is clear and well-focused. The best sound-bar on the market that you can buy for around $1,200 from Abes of Maine.

It's a big improvement over the YSP-1000 that I've had for 3 years. The extra power and refinements to the surround sound are big pluses. Best of all is the addition of HDMI connections. These are horizontally placed, instead of the previous model's vertical connections, which tend to loosen and disconnect from the weight of the cable. Another nice addition is the optional iPod dock. Unfortunately it is iPhone compatible only in the sense that it will connect to the iPhone and play music, but lacks any other integration or control. The addition of an FM receiver was attractive but disappointingly, it has terrible reception with the included FM antenna. I live in the center of the city and can get clear reception of less than 25% of the stations that my 10 year old, antennaless Bose Wave Radio clearly plays. So, it's significantly better than my previous Yamaha Sound Projector, but several of the new features have very limited utility.

I have travertine floors in my living room, so running wires for a "true" surround sound was simply impractical (not impossible, as I could have "trenched' the drywall and run wiring inside to get speaker wire to the other side of the room). Anyway, this is a very nice sound system for a typical wall mount flat screen. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't really interface with an A/V receiver, it's meant to replace it. As I have a nice receiver, I am a little disappointed about this.

Getting optimum sound is easy with "Intelliscan."
Without subwoofer, still sounds great, but for the cogncenti, get a subwoofer.

The Yamaha sound projector was easier to set up than I had read in a review and looks great. The sound is clear but I am not blown away by any means. It would probably perform better with a sub which I am considering adding. I would recommend it but not at full price. [...]

This is a great solution for good sound without having to run wires all around the room when paired with a good powered subwoofer. The sound is not as good as a traditional system, but for many non-audiophiles (which is most of us) this is a great product and you won't be able to tell the difference. The clean lines and single unit profile are great for maintaining a small footprint in the overall decor of the room (my wife loves that part)
