Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
I have been designing and building my own audio equipment since the mid 1950's, mostly because the equipment built by others is not exactly what I want. But the Yamaha RX-797 was a pleasant surprise. Its "natural sound" blends the best of what solid state and tube equipment do best. It has the smooth, sweet mids and highs of tubes, but lacks the "loose" low end. And it has the "tight" low end of solid state amps. Yamaha did it right. My only objection is the inputs- they should be user-programmable so that as times change and your audio equipment changes, so do the names of the inputs (Sony does this on their home theater equipment). Yamaha needs to assume their products will last the user 20 years or more.

Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
I replaced a 13 year-old Yamaha receiver with this one. It works great and I'm very happy with this purchase. My only complaint is that the A/B speaker selector is not a push-button and results in a very tiny "A" or "B" being displayed on the screen. My prior model had a larger display on the screen and a mechanical push-button which made it very easy to determine which speaker channel is selected. I switch back and forth often.

Our old system was a Denon purchased 16 years ago for $500.00. Lightning took it out, so had to replace. This Yamaha has more power and a crisper sound. Love it!

Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
I do my critical listening in my living room on two-channel tube gear. I bought this for use as a second system in master bedroom for music and TV. In that venue I listen to large digital music file via airport express or i-POD, tuner and audio from DVD's through HDTV. The RX-797 serves up the best of what old and new tech have to offer. Clean 2-channel sound, multiple input options...... yet supports digital formats beautifully and the output for sub-woofer is a nice extra. So far sounds great regardless of source including turntable, airport express, i-POD, CD, DVD or TV. Thanks, Yamaha for continuing to manufacture a quality solution where multi-channel just isn't needed or wanted.

If you want a quality Stereo Receiver just to enjoy your music and you are not looking for a giant A.V. package, then this is for you!
Solid construction with a clean presentation and Yamaha quality. You will not be able to beat the price. Our local electronics "super store" could order this unit for me at $550. Even on the Web, most are offering this unit for at least $100 more than Abe's.
If you are looking for the best sound for your dollar and you don't want a complete AV unit. You simply can't do better.

Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
I use this receiver to power two sets of 100-watt speakers. It is awesome! Also, the cable jacks are great for listening to music stations on television. I haven't tried the DVD jacks as yet.
Downside? Maybe that the power button is tiny. But,what the hey? Just seems a little cheesey along side of the larger knobs. Personal opinion.
Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
This is an outstanding receiver for two main reasons:
1. extremely clean sound--0.019%THD
2. big power--100 watts per channel.
For me it drives 4 sets of satellite speakers besides the main set, and the experience is breathtaking, assuming you have great speakers as well.
My only criticism is having to endure the tedious process of hooking up the speaker wires to the back of the receiver--not much room to work with.

Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
I simply wanted a nice 2-channel receiver for music. I chose the RX-797 because I have grown to like and trust Yamaha components. And the price at Abe's was great! I have had this receiver for only a couple of weeks and have listened to it for maybe 12 hours. Initially, it was hooked up to a pair of new Klipsch RB-61s. The sound was harsh and tiring. I then switched to a pair of Boston Acoustic RB-77s with a pair of RB-67s in the rear. The Yamaha RX-797 now sounds fantastic. Smooth, clear and clean. I listen to classic rock, oldies, and smooth jazz. Vocals are smooth and instruments sound as if the musicians are in your living room. The bass is clean and tight which is important to me. The RX-797 is built like a brick house. The controls feel solid and the unit looks nice. It has plenty of power and can rattle the walls if that's important to you. If you want to listen to music in good old stereo format, without all that surround sound hype, the RX-797 is a great choice. I am happy with it. On a different note: After listening to the Klipsch RB-61s on two different receivers, I have concluded that they are too harsh and tiring. I have learned a lesson and will never again buy speakers without listening to them first.

Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
The unit has sparkling clean sound with the ability of an even more crystal pure sound by means of a 'pure-direct' switch which by-passes certain minimally necessary control circuits. It's a solid, wholly competent stereo with a generous number of inputs, convenient controls, informative displays, more than sufficient power, and solid construction.

Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
I have had my beloved Bose 901 speakers unpowered for years after moving to a new home, and finally found a system worthy of their capabilities. The Yamana RX 797 is the perfect power for these gems. Excellent power performance and a very basic setup. Exactly what was needed. I couldn't ask for more.

Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
Replacing a burnt out 23 year old Denon I am pleased with the clean 100Watts per channel. I really wanted a receiver as opposed to home theater system. I also puchased a pair of Brown and Wilkonson CM-1s. It is true, superior fidelity brings you closer to the music, and that is what I am getting. My Denon was $600 23 years ago, it was not as loud or as bright as this receiver, especially at this price. The system gets plenty of natural bottom end, does not need a sub woofer.
Comments about YAMAHA RX-797 Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver:
I bought this receiver so I could get XM radio reception in my garage. I added a Terk 6 XM antennae and the meter on the Yamaha says I'm getting 100% reception strength. It sounds great with a basic stereo setup up (2 channels) plus a subwoofer. The power is very evident.
