Comments about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED 4000 dpi 35mm Film Scanner:
Needed device to convert many, many old 35mm slides to digital for viewing and emailing. This is definitely the best available, although pricey.
Comments about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED 4000 dpi 35mm Film Scanner:
Making full resolution TIFs of thousands of old Kodachrome slides. This will take months, doing one or two boxes per day. Time per photo, including dusting the slide and adjusting the scan colors, is around four minutes.
Scan quality (resolution, color) is comparable to my 8 megapixel digital camera.
It's very difficult to produce good results with the included software. VueScan makes it easy.
Comments about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED 4000 dpi 35mm Film Scanner:
This was an easy scanner to set up. Despite comments from some that it does not work well with Macs, I've been using it with an Intel Core 2 Duo Mac running System 10.5.8 with no problems.
Scans are fast, very close to the advertised 20 seconds. Both Kodachromes and E-6s require some tweaking of contrast and color in Photoshop after the fact, but not as much as with other scanners I've used in the past.
This scanner is really a breeze to use. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone for any use, from full-time production to hobby applications.

Needed to scan about 40,000 slides with best quality available. This is the best solution I have found within my limited budget.

Comments about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED 4000 dpi 35mm Film Scanner:
It is priced a bit high, but results are more than I hope for. Far better than using a flat bed scanner which gave me only fair results. I do recomennd the automatic feeder (SF-210)for large projects it was faster.
Comments about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED 4000 dpi 35mm Film Scanner:
The scanner is slower than advertised. In practice a single slide scan will take minutes not seconds.
The software is antiquated and not supported well in the manual. Must be 2004 or earlier. Feels like a Windows makeover for Mac. It is not made clear which adjustments can be made via hardware as opposed to software.
The .NEF format produced by the scanner differs from .NEF produced by other Nikon products.
Nikon tech support not able to provide info beyond basic information about scanning.
Would consider alternatives if i were to buy again

Comments about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED 4000 dpi 35mm Film Scanner:
Do not know if we got a defective machine, but the USB connection seems to be loose and we have a great deal of problems with the machine not being seen by the computer. We are using the bulk slide loader and there appears to be a short either in the connection to the loader or the USB connection as it takes a lot of moving them around until the connection is made. Once the computer recognizes the scanner it seems to work well until something is moved and shorts out again. Since it took 6 months after ordering to get the scanner, I am relictant to return it. Scanner software not real intuitive.
