The turntable is belt driven, not direct drive, and the tone arm balancer is a bit amaturish, not very high quality. I bought it mainly to record onto digital format, and it serves that purpose well, and was quick and easy to hook up and install. It also works with my home stereo system, but if you are looking for a high quality turntable, you would be better off getting a dedicated audio turntable. This one has both phono inputs and line input (in case your amplifier has only CD/Tape/Aux inputs) which is also a plus. The software is easy to use, and comes with both an easy program (for novices) and a more complete program (Audacity) for experienced recorders. It works only with iTunes, however. There is also an input jack that allows you to hook up a tape player to it to convert your old tapes to digital as well. Overall, I am quite happy with it for the price.
