I use this to schedule recordings of my favourite shows with my over the air tv antenna. Then I can watch them when it suites me and skip the adds. I looked for a digital unit like this in Canada but they are not available and without it you can't record the HD or digital channels. I have a seperate cable going to this unit and my tv so I can record and watch 2 different shows at the same time.
