It is genuine. There is no better alternative since Canon put a chip inside of it. It is a bit expensive for a battery but the body only cost $2700. Not hard to figure the math out.

I had the original 5D for almost a year and of course got used to the way the batteries performed. Now having the 5D Mark II and thus these new LP-E6 batteries, the improvement is remarkable. The battery life definitely seems longer, but even more importantly, the batteries actually store your usage logic! This displays on the camera LCD when needed. You see history, charge percentage, number of clicks, and recharge "health". [@]Excellent improvement!
