I have researched for 2 weeks the right DSLR for someone transitioning from a point and shoot. I was really open to anything and reviewed a number of reviews for Nikon, Canon and Sony. My decision was really swayed towards the Nikon D40 by [@] He really made sense in terms of not spending the extra $$ for a more advance DSLR if your primary use of this is for taking vacation and family pictures. The best thing I like about this camera is that it's really light and it's the cheapest DSLR. I used the $$ saved for a 35mm lens and a flash.

Great camera but I can't believe the 18-55mm lens broke already! Something came loose inside and I have to send it back. Bummer!

The best beginner SLR for the price with two awesome lens catering to all the needs of a photo-enthusiast. Ofcourse there are a choice of lenses from Nikon and third party vendors. Good camera to start off SLR photography.
Too bad it may soon be discontinued(if not already), so get one if you are planning for it

Nice and lightweight. Shoots with great quality out of the box but offers good manual controls too. The 18-55 lens is great for almost everything, but it is still nice to have the 55-200 for subjects that are a bit further away. My only complaint is that the LCD/Menu takes a little too long to load. It is a great camera with a very reasonable price.

Great camera for people considering entering the Digital SLR environment. It makes GREAT pictures (who needs more than 6 M Pixels unless you plan to enlarge your pictures significantly.) Very happy with the camera. Very happy with Abe's. Would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I use my camera for fun, family events, portraits, and sporting events and it is great. I am glad I didn't buy the more expensive cameras.
