We use this on vacation and around town. It gets used at least 2-3 a week and we have be very pleased so far. I wish you could use the viewer to look at while taking photos but the Canon SLRs have always been eyepiece only. Small price to pay for the quality and features you get with this starter SLR.

When I first opened the box of my new Rebel XS I was ecstatic. I immediately charged the battery, and began to explore what this camera can do. I read the manual, and it seems fairly simple to maneuver. I took it with me everywhere for the past two weeks. It was great at school hockey games, parties, and outdoors the pictures turn out exceptionally wonderful. Just a few days ago the image quality went down, and I now have a somewhat new camera with poor image quality. I did not do anything to bring this about, I just do not think this camera is made entirely well, and I would recommend spending a little bit more money for the Canon Rebel XSI, the newer model of the XS. If you are looking for an affordable, easy to use EOS camera, you may want this one. But there is a chance of it suddenly breaking down like mine had.

A great deal. I was in doubt of getting a Xsi, but I think I made a smart choice of saving a few extra bucks and then investing on a lens. The basic difference between then are the 2MP (10MP on the Xs vs. 12MP on the XSi) and the extra inches on the Xsi's LCD. So, I really think is better to spend those extra bucks on a extra lens.

I didn't have time to learn about the camera as I received it 5 hours before we entered the hospital for the birth of my daughter. I used it on automatic and it took great pictures. In low lighting, the shutter is slower, so the subject has to hold their pose. It's impossible with a baby, so I used the flash and despite the "artificial" feel of using a flash, the pictures are sharp. As an amateur photographer, I would recommend this camera as a great first step in becoming a photography hobbyist.

I bought this camera about a year ago to get into the digital SLR realm. I was heavily considering the rebel XSI at the time, the features are almost identical between the cameras with a few small differences (to me at least). I have been extremely happy with the camera; having used it extensively at the Grand Canyon, taking portraits, and just snapping photos when the opportunity presents itself. If you are looking to get into the DSLR game, this is a great entry camera!

I purchased this camera just 3 days before starting on a cross country journey to photograph museum ships and I was able to shoot 13 ships in 15 days, this camera worked flawlessly as I shot over 6 thousand photos with virtually no problems. Working around Naval Vessels is not easy on a camera, with all the ladder climbing and hatches to go through that I did, this camera held up against all the odds. I am very careful with my equipment but that isn't always enough.
The lightweight design of this camera was well appreciated on the long hard days that we endured.
I have and would continue to recommend this camera and Abe's of Maine to friends and associates.

When my boyfriend and I decided to get a new camera, we decided to get something a little different then then usual point and shoot that we always got. We researched and ended up with the Canon Rebel...and we haven't regretted it! It was a little intimidating at first but after the first few pictures, I just couldn't get enough. In the first 3 days (we were at a music festival) we took a combined 4000 photos! Now, the only problem is that we need to buy different lenses...the stock ones are great but now we're ready for an upgrade!

Nothing can really get better than this. The Price was simply amazing and for an amateur photo-enthusiast, this is one great camera. It would be great if there were suggestions / recommendations for other EF-S Macro, Zoom or Wide Angle Lens while purchasing the product. Also recommendations for good CPLs, UV and ND Filters would have been helpful. Overall this is an AWESOME product and worth every buck!

This is my first DSLR camera. I have been using it to photograph the different places I visit, mostly landscape and architecture. Still trying to learn all of its features. It took me a few weeks to get a handle on what the controls do. You really have to read the manual that comes along with this camera. The good thing is you have preset modes that let the camera to the whole work. Then as you get better, you can start playing around with the different controls to make it semi-manual or fully manual mode. So far, I haven't seen any drawbacks for this camera. Then again, this is my first DSLR. All in all, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get into DSLR cameras.

This is a fine camera and just what I had been looking for. The price is very reasonable and it does everything a highter priced carmera would do. It is fully autmomatic, which means you just click the picture without any effort. Just point and shoot if you are on vacation. Everything has come out beautifully for me. But with a click of the button, you can control everything from the shutter speed to the lens opening. I'm getting into this now -- fancy photography, night shots, playing with colors and hues. It's all new and exciting to me and the camera is functioning just marvelously. The booklet is very clear and readable. This cameram is a bargain. It's a wonderful camera to begin your digital SLR photography!

One of the best entry level DSLR I've come across with a $500 budget. Used this mostly for indoor events, and the results have been great. Would definitely need an external flash for low light, or simply invest in a F1.4 or F1.8 lens.

I had not been happy with prior point and click digital cameras due to slow speed and poor quality in low light. This camera is taking great shots and I have not had any problems taking photos of art in lower light conditions with a tripod. Resolution is good. Camera was easy to use for basic shots on auto and I am enjoying playing with all the features to get the shots I want.

I have had great experiences with Canon cameras in the past (including the S3 IS and SD750), so when I chose to upgrade to a dSLR I immediately looked at the Rebel series.

So far, I am thrilled with the Rebel XS. The pictures are spectacular...with richer color and sharper image quality than the S3. I haven't experimented with many of the specialized settings yet, but the Macro function works quite well.

This camera does not ship with a memory card, so make sure you purchase one in advance. You'll also want a case to protect your investment, especially since the LED screen is exposed on the back.

Canon has artificially limited some of the features on this camera. One feature I especially don't like is the inability to turn off the flash for automatic mode.

At first I bought a G10 but the pictures are so noisy, I had to return it and get the XS. I resented the dSLR for the longest time, but it's just ridiculous that every picture of anything black in darker places has yellow or white dots on it. Now, the XS does not have the manly look or feel as the G10, but hands down it takes much better pictures, exponentially, even on full auto mode. People that tell you that you should stick with a point-and-shoot if you don't know what you are doing is lying to you. They are probably very guarded about who uses a dSLR. The smallest dSLR's sensor is at least 4 times bigger than the biggest point and shoot. And yes, it's 4x better.

I might not know what I'm talking about but this is my first dSLR and it's MUCH better than anything I've shot with. I've played around with for a couple of days now, and for someone that doesn't know what he's doing, I'm doing a good job. Really, it isn't that hard.

This camera has been great, a wonderful entry level addition to SLRs. With the preset settings, someone with no experience can pick it up and start taking great photos immediately. The more advanced features are easy to understand if you know what they are beforehand, but if not, reading the manual will give you a quick lesson on how to use them. I use this for my budding hobby of photography. This is my first Digital SLR and I really like it. The live view function is great for the transition from Point'n'shoot to SLR. I actually prefer using the viewfinder now. Live view can't be used on every shooting mode. I have so far purchased a pop up flash diffuser, extra battery, 4 lense filters, camera bag, tripod & monopod. I plan on purchasing a flash unit soon. I also got 2 SDHC Class 6 cards (8 gig each) that hold about 1500 pictures each on best setting. You can take multiple pictures quickly without waiting while outdoors during the day. Flash pictures have a slight delay, but not as much as a PnS camera. Very good for the price.

For the price, you really can't beat this camera. It consistently takes wonderful images and the kit lens is VERY sharp. I have the renowned Canon 50mm f1.8 lens also (the "Nifty Fifty") and this 18-55 IS kit lens is ALMOST as sharp as that lens. And that lens is SUPER-sharp! The only reason I switch to the 50mm lens is if I'm doing low-light photography - sharpness concerns don't make me switch!

A few cons about this camera are the smallish viewfinder (my old film Canon Rebel 2000 has a larger viewfinder, though it's blurrier) and the small grip. I have really large hands, and it's not very comfortable. It works, though, and I forget about it after about 10 seconds of shooting, so it's not a dealbreaker. Other than those minor gripes, I have nothing but good things to say! It's cheap enough that I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere!

I bought this as a gift for my daughter, as a first D-SLR. I've used Nikon equipment in the past and currently use a Nikon D-SLR. The Canon EOS Rebel XS combined the advantages of Live View (but only on certain shooting modes), an included Image-Stabilizing lens, reasonable resolution (10.1 MP), and generally overall ease-of-use. In working with it (with her) I've been very happy with it.

My background: Toyed with film 35mm SLRs in high school. Have steadily worked my way up the food chain of P/S digital cameras for about the past 7 years. Started with a little 2MP Sony and have progressed to Canon PowerShots. This is my first dSLR, but I have used others at work over the past year.

Cut to the chase, I love the XS. Is it perfect?- No, it's not intended to be. It IS intended to be a high-quality, entry-level dSLR that you can learn with and grow with (as you upgrade lenses you will eventually upgrade bodies and then the lenses make the transition with you).

Anyone that really knocks this camera, I think, is probably used to a much higher-end camera. I have found the picture quality to be superb, the handling great, and the kit lenses are quite impressive. This is a high-value dSLR that I am glad I purchased. Absolutely no buyers remorse here!

I am moving up from a more simple camera. I love photography: my kids, scenery, for artwork, and for my blossoming media maniac teenager. This camera is a great step up without getting over my head in cost or knowledge base. It is easy to use and the picture quality is beautiful. For telephoto, do invest in a zoom lens. I am using filters to enhance and to protect the longevity of the lenses. Hope this helps someone.

Almost gave up on being able to capture what I saw in a photo after owning several compact digitals. Always seemed to miss the shot or have a setting wrong. The comparative cost of an SLR was a reach for me, especially with little hope of better results.

Now I know it was only partially lack of skill. This camera has given me reason to think I might one day capture something someone else will want to look at. It is fast, precise, and intuitive to operate. It is teaching me at a rapid clip.

I can't speak in comparison to other SLR's, but as a hopeful amatuer looking to learn new skills, it is perfect.

Battery life is better than I was led to believe and both 15Mb/sec and 133x SD cards record as fast as I can shoot.

Concerns about lense durability and LCD monitor damage were addressed with UV filters and a screen protector, both available online for very little.

I've had the Rebel XS for a couple of weeks and I couldn't be happier. I bought it so I could catch my 4 yr old doing all the cool things 4 yr olds do and my old point and shoot just wasn't fast enough. The controls were a little overwhelming at first, but I went to Barnes and Noble and bought "Rebel XS for Dummies" and the quality of the pictures I'm taking now is incredible compared to my old camera (Sony 7.1 MP point and shoot). This is a great camera for someone who doesn't want to spend months learning how to use an SLR but wants to take pictures that you'd be proud to hang on the wall in your home.

I like this camera because, for the price, it takes great photos. I mostly use it for indoor shots of my kids so the increased shutter speed and aperture relative to a point and shoot really helps. I had a hard time deciding between this camera and the 450D. In the end, I think this camera does everything I wanted and then some. The 450D would have given me a few more megapixels and some functions I would not use. The only con I have with this camera is the ergonomics. Still, for the price, it is a great camera.

This is the perfect first SLR, it gets you into the Canon family and can use All of their lenses. Between Nikon and Canon this camera was the best value I could find. I got the camera w/kit lens + a telephoto lens for a price less than the XSi body-only.

I bought this camera as a upgrade from a point &shoot.In the past I had used a 35mm film camera and I missed the creative control you had with that format. After my kids got me into the digital age, with the point & shoot, i realized I wanted the creative options again. I did some research and price gathering for an entry level DSLR and chose the Canon EOS Rebel XS. It was within my price range and offered more options than similar brands. I couldn't be happier. This camera fulfills all the types of photography i like to do( sports,landscapes,news) and with the many lenses' available there are really very few images that can't be taken. The software that comes with the camera really helps to retouch and electrify the images. Purchasing from Abes was also beneficial in that you could get a kit packaged with a Canon 70-300mm lens(although not top of the line) for a fantastic price. Although this camera is an entry level, the 18-55 lens that comes with the camera has IS and is a very good lens.
I would recommend this camera to anyone looking to upgrade from a point & shoot or in place of a point & shoot as a first camera considering the price offered by Abes of Maine. Customer service at Abe's will also help you with any questions or any problems you may encounter and are very knowledgable.

I'm a casual photographer and this is my first SLR. I'm glad I decided to pick this camera over another entry-level DSLR, Nikon D40. Unlike the D40, there is no noise problems and the 10.1 megapixels help with cropping. It's comfortable and sits nicely in your hands, which is a significant upgrade over past Rebel models. The 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera really shines because it is an IS lens, which you have the option to switch on and off. My only complaint would be navigating through menus and getting to know how certain settings work, but you can't argue with picture quality. The pictures are outstanding. Much better than the Nikon D40. Definitely pick up if you either looking to start photography as a serious hobby or you are just looking take great pictures.

As a former Rebel SLR owner, I've waited years to purchase a Rebel Digital SLR. I put my Rebel XS to test right out of the box by taking on a winter youth retreat with my church's youth group. Whether taking outdoor pictures of activities or taking indoor concert pictures at Liberty University, I was not only impressed, but extremely pleased with the results. When I provided pictures for a slide show at our church, I had three people come to me after the show and ask what kind of camera I used to take those shots.

Top notch camera with ease of use. This was my first digital SLR and I was talked out of getting the Nikon D60 by several people as that was my original intention. The picture quality is the best I have used and it was easy to figure out how to take pictures right out of the box. The shutter speed is also amazingly fast. I can't wait to figure out all the features!!

I really wanted my first step into the DSLR world to be a fun one. My pictures were focusing wrong and appeared fuzzy and slightly over exposed. I read quite a bit on different camera forums and found out that people are experiencing both sub par image quality and focusing issues with both the XS and XSi.The people who get good copies seem to love their cameras.My advice is if you want either the XS or XSi make sure you are happy with it and the images and the focus.[...]

This is a really great camera. The only thing that it is missing is the wireless remote capability. Some of the wireless remotes say that it will work with the XS. It will NOT. This camera does not have IR sensors on it. Other than that, it is a great camera.

The slow stabilized lens and the refined autofocus make it easy to produce sharp pictures. I suspect that the camera is capable of much higher quality pictures with a better lens.

I am very pleased with this camera. Unless you are a professional photographer this camera has everything you need in a digital SLR. It's fast and just as easy to use as a point and shoot camera. I considered the more expensive models but didn't see anything that would justify the extra cost. I was impressed that the Rebel XS came with features like live view and image stabilization even though it's the entry level model. The image quality is excellent. I don't think it would benefit from having more pixels. 10MP is perfect for this camera.

The main reasons I decided to switch to a Digital SLR, were; the image quality, shutter speed, and ability to change lenses. I travel a few times a year, and love to take landscape shots. I would always be disappoint when I would get an excellent photo and not be able to enlarge it passed an 8 x 10. I’ve read that with the Canon Xs you can enlarge your photo’s up to a 20 x 30, not really sure if I would go that large, but I like the option. I recently went to the Corning museum of glass in upstate New York, where you’re not allowed to use a flash. I was very nervous about how my shots would turn out, since my point and shot had a poor track record in that department. Much to my surprise the camera was quick to focus and took high quality shots, even through the display cases! I did end up with about 7 out of focus shots, but considering I took around 60 pictures, and I always take multiple shots, I think I made out pretty well. The real test will be my cousins wedding, I intend on buying the battery grip and the 430 ex canon flash before I go and maybe the lens that picks up were the kit lens ends, EF-S 55mm – 250mm with IS. If you take vertical shots it can be a little awkward without the battery grip. I picked the XS after a week of research. Among its competition it’s said to have the better image quality. I am very happy with the decision I made in this camera.

Thought I had done something wrong right off the bat but it does not use the LCD as a view finder. You have to actually have to put it up to your eye to take pictures. But that's fine with me because it just makes it feel old school. An LCD option would probably be nice but not a deal breaker. It's an extremely nice camera. It was my first purchase from Abe's so I was a little worried but they had pretty good reseller reviews so I tried em. The camera was almost $100.00 cheaper than most places. [...]

Point and Shoots can not compare with this xs! For the money you can not beat the EOS xs. XSI's are not worth the difference in cash. You can not go wrong with the xs especially if you are used to "point and shoots"!

The flexibility of a SLR can not be beat,,,,,Especially if it bears the word "CANON" on the front. This camera, as all cameras are not great in low light. The plastic just does not feel good in your hands. Nevertheless, you can not go wrong with this purhcase. Also, Abe's is first class! I have never dealt with another internet site so customer oriented!

Right out of the box I was getting great shots, even in full auto. This light little gem is what I was looking for in a replacement for my aging Sony S-85. While I'm not a avid photographer, I can see myselfe going that direction with this puppy.

The camera was packaged well and was used right from the box. The intuitive menu and set up was easy. As a first time digital SLR owner, I could not ask for an easier camera to use. The basic shooting modes are great and I am getting more comfortable with the manual controls which seem to be in line with what I expect. I have not found much to be critical about. I am happy with my choice with my only wonder being whether I should have stepped up to the 12MP?

The pictures are great, its got enough features to keep a neewbie occupied for quite a while. The one thing you'll have to get use to, looking through the viewfinder instead of the LCD. I guess this is the step required to graduate from snapshot photography to high quality picts. If you haven't checked out [...] - do it! Put these great picts to use in a new book.

We couldn't find a compact camera fast enough to take pictures of our 2 year old. Everything was blurred or he was already gone by the time the camera turned on, focused, and picture taken. We'll never go back to compacts.

I bought this camera for a friend of mine who had initially intended to get a Nikon D60. After side by side comparison (and I being a Canon brand-loyalist), convinced her to get the Rebel XS. The bonus 75-300mm telephoto lens adds a bunch of stars to the package. I've always owned Canon and you just can't go wrong with their Digital Rebels.

This camera has many wonderful features most of which I haven't figured out yet. The best thing about this camera is that just setting it on Auto Focus allows an amateur to take great pictures. Eventually I will have time to learn all the different features and be able to take fantastic pictures. It also comes with editing software. Again, will take some time to fully learn the software but it has some nice features.

Reading camera reviews, to me, is a lot like reading reviews of golf clubs. People will try to push you to purchase what they feel they need, more than you feel you need, and they do not hesitate to spend your money for you.

If you're moving up from P&S cameras and are looking for a quality dSLR, this is a great step. The Canon XS, despite lacking a few features of its big brother XSi (like Spot metering, a bigger screen, highlight tone priority), is a fantastic value, especially at Abe's prices.

The dSLR market is quite advanced now. The quality of the XS exceeds that of the XTi it replaces. This camera has the tools you'll need for at least 95% of your photos. If you're just getting started into photography, you should get this kit just to learn basic functions, and eventually learn why in the future you may want the features of the more advanced models.

This camera performs very well in low light, and the noise level at ISO1600 is very minimal in my experience. This means at max ISO you can easily obtain print-quality photographs and gives you flexibility regarding composition.

The kit lens is decent, and shows minimal distortion at max and min distances. It's not the fastest lens on the market, but it's a kit lens with image stabilization. It's actually a bargain if you factor the cost into this kit.

Where this camera really shines is the image quality. Many claim great image quality from small P&S cameras, but with their smaller lenses and smaller lenses, the quality, if you control it correctly is fantastic with a dSLR.

Remember, the best part about owning a Canon dSLR is that you get access to all of Canon's lenses, which is a diverse line of glass that will have a greater impact on your photographs than a more expensive camera body.

I have been very pleased with this camera. The battery lasts almost forever, the image quality is great, low light performance is great, the screen is vibrant and accurate, controls are easy to manage and the menus are straightforward. This camera begs you to learn and improve your craft.

Overall, I am satisfied with the product.. It was worth the price. Sometimes, the color red turns out be a little lighter in the photograph. I still need to experiment a little more with. This was my first DSLR, and I am definitely enjoying my photography with it!!

This camera is the real thing. I had a very versatile point and shoot prior to this model, but after many hours and days studying the online reviews, I decided a step up was in order.
