I owned a couple of 35 mm SLR's since back in the 70's, but when digital came out I got lazy with a point and shoot. Coming back to an SLR after almost a decade took a little time to catch-up, but the learning curve was short. I purchased a video of "how to" that also helped significantly. The camera is amazing, and the IS mode is one great technology. I believe the image quality is every bit as good if not better than 35 mm!

Been on the fence to get into the DSLR market, though finally put down my point-and-shoot and settled on this after lots of research. I absolutely do not regret this purchase! Pictures come out great, and I love that it's compatible with all of the lenses my brother uses (who has a higher end Canon DSLR). It was very easy to pick up the controls, and is very friendly for those that are making the crossover from point-and-shoots.

Exposed LCD is a major design flaw. Also, even the basic Canon models allow live view shooting for all modes. This camera does not allow live view for the basic modes and that is a bummer.

I use this camera everywhere I go...day trips, family functions, with friends, my classroom, even at home. It's very easy to use and makes a great transitional camera from point and shoot to slr because it has many similar features. I'm not a professional by any means, but so far, this camera takes great shots and is not too heavy, depending on the lenses you use. It's also comfortable to hold. The one thing, though, is that it is a little slow to focus and is sort of loud. But if it doesn't bug you, then this camera is perfect. I recommend sticking to Canon lenses also because the camera can have slight challenges "reading" third party lenses.

I wanted an entry-level camera for a 13 year old child (that I could use also). I was hesitant about spending the money, but I'm glad I did. There are more expensive cameras on the market, but none offer as much as the Canon Rebel XSi. It is so easy to use. If this is an entry-level camera, then I have to rethink the definition of "entry-level." There are so many features that are standard on this camera, and yet there is still plenty of room to grow. You're ready to start shooting right out of the box and you'll think you're a professional in no time!

I've been shooting constantly for the past decade, mostly using my trustworthy Canon EOS 500. This one is the perfect replacement and so much more. It allows control about every feature (including ISO) and also has various auto modes to help beginners. The menu and functions are very user friendly and intuitive and important functions have easy one push access.
The camera itself is not heavy at all and very comfortable. So much fun!!

Finally made the jump to digital, and I am thrilled with the XSi. It can be used as a full auto point and shoot, completely manually, or anything in between. The capabilities of this camera are incredible, as are the photos it produces. If you are not a professional photographer the sheer number of controls and adjustments available may seem intimidating. For this reason, I also highly recommend the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi Companion - written by Ben Long. He does a good job of explaing what the camera can do and how to do it in plain english. With his book, the owners manual, and a little practice you will be well on your way to getting real enjoyment and producing great pictures with the XSi. The photos may give you an idea of what the camera can do - the fact that they are not perfect is my fault, not the camera's.

My wife wanted a light-weight DSLR for outdoor photography. The XSi was an ideal choice. Whether it's candids of the grandchildren or beautiful sunsets this outfit has exceeded her expectations.

With the Canon 70-300mm IS zoom lens we were able to get terrific shots of pheasants and wild ducks the first time out. Champagne quality on our beer budget.

I needed high quality photos for publicity (printing) and web page of my glass art work. These are difficult to light and photograph because of reflections. 20 years of experience with a Nikon SLR gave me courage to try the Canon Rebel XSi, my first encounter with a digital SLR. I was amazed at the improvement in sharpness, and the ease of controlling all of the photo parameters. It is like skipping the darkroom entirely, and the camera does things that I was never able to master with my original camera or in the darkroom. The multitude of automatic features take a while to learn to use properly, but the layout of the controls is intuitive and sensible. Though camera technology is improving rapidly, I regret waiting this long to upgrade to a digital SLR.

Amazed that such a light weight camera can take great pictures. Film camera is a Zeiss Canterax, even the digital camera is lighter than the film camera 50mm lens. Very compact.
Learning the camera's features is easy as I can see the results immediatley, can determine what I did wrong, erase the pic and do over correctly.

I am an absolute newcomer to the field of SLR photography and this is my very SLR first camera buy. After a long battle between final 2 choices (Nikon D90 and Canon XSi) I chose the Canon due to the price point difference. Plus Abe's gave me a great deal for the camera and 2 lens kit (18-55 & 75-300). Throw in a couple UV filters and extra battery as recommended and the cost was still below Nikon option with 1 standard lens.

While, its been only 3 weeks since I have had this camera I have since taken it for a good long walk or two across the city (NYC). Though I have not yet moved to the stage of advanced photography the pictures from this camera are simply amazing. The colors are bright and auto-focus features provide you the best clarity on any desired object. The operations are fairly intuitive and simple. The layout of the controls is very well planned with buttons in the right places even for a beginner like me. With the help of provided manual, a few podcasts and own experimentation I think I can easily move to a better level of photography. The camera certainly has provided me with the confidence :)

Its an absolute no brainer buy for beginners like me looking for great quality and capabilities without breaking the banks.

I’ve had digital cameras for over 10 years. This is by far the best I’ve used. The programmed modes (portrait, landscape, etc.) allow for point and click ease of use. The expert modes allow for total control of the camera for those comfortable with a SLR. The IS (image stabilizer) lenses make great pictures easy. The SD card memory can be found practically anywhere. I can put over 1400 pictures (hi-res, 12 mega-pixel jpg) on a single 8GB SD card. The speed of this camera is like a film camera of old, push the button and it takes a picture (or many in the rapid mode) no waiting and missing shots like some of the older point and shoot digitals. Solid camera! I took this on a recent trip to Animal Kingdom and my wife took almost 600 pictures. Depending on the setting, we get between 400k-2megs per picture. With an 8 gig SDHC card (pretty cheap, I got mine for [$]) it should be able to take over 3,000 pictures easily. Have not had to recharge the battery in 3 weeks and have taken close to 1000 pictures.

I got the Rebel during my Christmas holidays from school, and I have done nothing but enjoy excellent picture taking since. I'm simply a beginner trying to learn the ropes of photography, but so far I have taken some excellent shots outdoors on both sunny and cloudy days and also captured some wonderful indoor moments with friends and family.

It's great because all the important features and settings are easy to access and understand. I have had no trouble figuring out exactly what settings do what as I have tinkered around with it.

All in all I would give this product two thumbs up. It's great for starting out because it introduces you to the fact that photography is more than just point and shoot, while making the learning curve not so steep.

The Rebel XSi is a great camera with which to enter the digital SLR world. Having not used an SLR since my old 35mm days, I'm having to make some adjustments from my point-and-shoot habits of the last several years, but I'm willing to adjust. In particular, I can't zoom after focusing, or objects will be unclear. Also, the kit lens is a bit soft, but I'm planning to buy some L lenses (EF, so I can use them on a full frame body in the future), so the kit lens probably won't get much use, eventually. The built-in flash is surprisingly powerful, and I am still taking pictures off my first charge (two batteries with the BG-E5 grip installed)! I'm very pleased with this purchase, especially considering the price of this body and its features.

Pros: I wanted a camera I could 'grow' into. There's so much camera that it'll take me a while to master most of it's features. I also like it's lighter weight than the standard 40D, even with the 55mm-200mm lens. It makes it maneuverable for me.
Cons: I wish there were more specific accessories for it. I get face prints all over the LCD. I'd like to see a bumper type accessory.

This is my first DSLR. Once I got used to using the eyepiece (though it does have live view!) I was off and running. This camera focuses much better and quicker than anything I've used (even in low light). The auto mode takes great pictures in a variety of settings (something else I am not used to). Picture quality is excellent, which is why I bought the camera. You will probably want to buy a super zoom lens, so be sure you get one that says "IS" at the end which stands for Image Stabilization. The only stablizier is what comes in the lenses. I bought a lens without it and it is useless without a tripod.

I used this camera while travelling and hiking. The relative light weight makes it very comfortable to carry during hikes. The image stabilization feature has encouraged me to take pictures that normally I would've avoided. In low light conditions the auto-focus may have a hard time focusing.

I have been using a Canon point and shoot for the past few years after giving up on my 35mm Canon Elan IIe. All I can say is: Wow!!! What a great camera! Put it on auto and my wife has no problems firing away. But there are plenty of custom functions that will keep most amateurs challenged. The picture quality is excellent. I also purchased the basic 50mm prime lens, which I highly recommend if you take a lot of portraits indoors. Great bokeh and it basically eliminates the need for a flash. Overall, this is a great kit.

I moved up from a plain aim and shoot camera, which I still own and occasionally use, but when I want absolutely top notch shots I pull out the big gun, my XSI. My wife and I absolutely love the XSI. She will usually just use the "Full Auto" while I am a little more adventuresome and use "Program Mode". I also purchased a Tripod and Telephoto IS lense and this gives me everything that I could possibly ask for. The Quick Pocket Guide and 195 page full booklet as provided, allow me to get full use from the camera features. Unlike some reviews, I find that the standard battery (included) gives me plenty of reserve power, however I have a spare battery just in case. On continuous mode, even with flash, the speed is excellent. We have a 3 year old grand daughter and this mode makes it easy to get several shots and then choose the best ones. I have owned Canon 35 MM roll film cameras for several years and have never had to repair one. I'm sure, based on the quality workmanship, that this camera will be with me for a lifetime.

The camera is OK, I was a little dissaappoined in that my son has a Nikon D40 and his pictures look as good if not better. Focusing with the view finder takes some geting used to. It is easy to have your subject off center and not know until you view the photo. The camera is light and easy to use. Not sure if it was worth the extra money over the Nikon.

I am familiar with the Rebel XT, having used it shooting for my college paper. The XSI is far superior. While I have only had the XSI for a few days and have only take a couple hundred shots with it, I have noticed the difference between the two. It feels sturdier and more professional. The larger LCD screen is a big improvement, as well as the handle. the button placement also seems more convenient.

The Canon Rebel series is a great intro to DSLR photography. The for the image quality, the price is fantastic. Basically, your only limit is the amount of new lenses you want to buy. when you buy the camera, you will want to order an extra battery with it, and a UV filter to protect the lens. Make sure the UV filter is multicoated. If you have the money, get the canon EF 50mm 1.8 lens- for around [$], its a great portrait lens.

After hours of research and trial use, for me, the Canon XSi in the newly available dual IS lens kit was by far the best value available. This kit until now was only available in Europe. The more common dual lens kit sold in the US had Image Stabilization (IS) in the 18-55 lens but not in the 55-250 zoom. Read closely. Canon's IS system works flawlessly. Its ability to stabilize the 55-250 lens at full zoom is unmatched by in-the-camera electronic IS that other manufacturers use. I am getting 3 to 4 stops more using IS handheld. I've read many reviews about the XSi's limitations using multi-zone autofocus but I have found it to be no different than multi-zone autofocus systems on other cameras. It occasionally will pick up on an object that is closer than your main subject. Just use it set to the center point only and pay attention to what your pointing at when you focus. The XSi will automatically bracket shoot not only exposures but new to me white balance settings as well. Its almost impossible to get a bad shot when using it in auto modes. Battery life seems exceptional. The first charge easily took me past 300 photos (100 with flash) including all the time I spent learning and setting up the camera. The built in flash has a very useful range at higher ISO's but I did find it not to be diffused enough as it produces a mild horizontal bright stripe across the photo. Since I regularly use an auxilary flash unit this isnt much of a problem. The XSi is very lightweight yet feels very solid. The grip is comfortable and makes the camera very easy to hold on to. Live View was the deal breaker for me for cameras in this price range. Currently Nikons D90 is the base model with Live View and it is a few hundred dollars more with only one lens. Live view is great for tripod work and when holding the camera overhead in a crowd at my kids school functions. My only real complaint are the 2 autofocus methods used during Live View. Both must be applied with a button push when desired. One mode spends a lot of time hunting for proper focus which it gets close at best most of the time while the other mode has to drop the shutter mirror for a few seconds while focus is achieved. This second mode works best but takes 3 to 5 second and while the prism mirror is dropped the Live View is black. Best just to manual focus for these shots.
I was a little concerned with the max ISO being limited to 1800 when other cameras are pushing 3600. But after seeing the results at 1800 and how clean and clear the pixels are I can see that Canon decided that anything higher just gets messy (As Ive seen in other cameras set above 1800). There are a lot of menus and settings (some people complain) but thats what we want in a camera like this - full control. Its easy to build a custom user menu that includes just the items you use regularly so you dont have to hunt through all of them to find each setting. As with all Canons Ive owned the software bundled with the camera is a big bonus. The new photo editing software included is great for the budding amateurs in my house that dont need a full featured application like Lightroom or Photoshop. Glad they are all now Mac compatible too. All in all I think you'll really enjoy this model. It has rekindled my love for photography that had fallen away over the years getting lazy with point and shoots. And for less than $800 !!!

Wanting to start my own business and needed a Camera with a decent lens, and I am not let down by the performance of this camera. It's great! I love the IS kit lens, live view, quick sensor, easy viewfinder, simple controls, All around great camera! The only complaint I have about it is the Zoom in and Zoom out buttons, they are kind of hard to reach only because the plastic material comes kind of close to the buttons.Do some research, find out if it fits you, if it does BUY IT! Camera is very good and easy to use. The only small inconvenience is that live view on the LCD does not work in the automatic picture mode. You have to use the viewfinder.

I own a Canon AE1 which I used many, many years ago. The transition to the Canon Rebel XSI was easy. The features and settings are the same. This is a very easy camera to use and it's great for taking pictures of children and animals. I particularly like the continuous shooting feature. The basic lens takes nice pictures but to get closer, you'll need to invest in a zoom lens which I plan to do. I did a lot of research before making my purchase and found Abes of Maine has the best price too!

I compared this with the Pentax K200d and the Nikon D60, as a first-time DSLR buyer. They all have their relative merits. But I kept going back to Canon because I've always had good experience with their products. This one did not disappoint. I especially like the fast shutter speed and the high megapixel sensor. I intend to give some nice framed pictures for Xmas this year and with the 12MP I won't worry about blowing them up to size. Highly recommended!

I previously had a Canon G5 rangefinder digital camera, and was disappointed in it. Even though it had many features, they were difficult to access. Absolutely the opposite is true of my new EOS XSi. I have never had a camera that has had more functions, was as easy to use, and allowed me to obtain great results. That is saying a lot because I am 59 years old and have been doing photography since I was in junior high school. My Dad bought me a Nikon F when I was in high school, so I have done it all over the years. I would recommend this camera to anyone. Even a novice could use the full auto mode until they learmed more about the creative controls.

Have not much experience as yet but the resolution is incredible. I magnified an area on one photo and actually had reflections of surrounding objects that were close to photo quality in their own right.

This is my second Canon EOS rebel, my first was a 35mm. I have used some other digital cameras but this is far superior to either of them. I love the shutter speed and ability to take 3pictures per second to capture racing action at the track.

This is a great camera. I did a lot of research before finally getting it. As anewbie to dSLR I still have a lot to learn, and at times it does feel a bit overwhelming. The camera feels great in my hands, very light, and just "fits right in". The screen is nice and big. The picture quality is awesome. I am trying to take my time and learn all the settings and really increase my knowledge of photography. Can't wait to master it and get another lens! It will be perfect when we take it on our honeymoon to Europe next spring.
Suggestion - get a longer lasting battery.

Large screen with easy to use live view function, good ISO speeds, and good feel to the body. The lens isn't the best, but is totally capable of taking landscapes in good light.

I'm no pro-just a mom that loves this camera for taking portraits of my chilldren and shots of them participating in their various activities/sports. Outside shots/portraits are particularly beautiful with bright colors and clarity. It is light enough to always take with me yet feels really well made. I can take action shots in the sports mode and with a zoom lens while sitting in the stands and still get my son playing in the middle of the football field! It's a great next step up from a point and shoot. I am still learning how to improve indoor shots in lower light situations though.

I purchased the XSi to replace my Rebel Ti film slr for home/ personal use.I have a digital point and shoot, but I wanted the control that an slr can provide. I do portrait studio photography as a side job, but not as my main occupation. As for value, to purchase the body alone version is not worth it. The purchase of the kit (lens included) is a much better value.
I found having a basic slr knowledge quite helpful in getting started with the camera, but not necessary. The instructions are quite clear and the camera's operation is very easy to adapt to. In the few weeks I have had it, I have used the camera in several situations and achieved very good results. Outdoors the quality of the nature photography was outstanding. In a sports situation, by adjusting the shutter speed, I was able to freeze frame action shots with ease. Indoors, the portrait work has been excellent too. Even in very low light. The 3" LCD monitor is also a great asset when reviewing the photos. I never missed having such a large monitor, but now I don't want to be without it.
I realize the price can seem a bit high, but I feel that the results are worth it.

This is an excellent camera, no doubt. everyone that I took are satisfied with the result. It is perfect for Portraits pictures if you use 50mm f/1.8 lense together. I was hasitating between Canon Xsi & Nikon D80.They are on the very simular price range. I have no regret and pretty much enjoying with my Xsi. The issues between nikon and canon are on your personal flavor and choice, but personally I believe in this price range Nikon D80 is the better camera in many ways.

O.K., what you need first. You may want to get a separate flash for this camera. I also ordered a starter kit, which includes camera bag, UV filter, extra battery, mainly for the camera carrying bag. But, you don't really need UV filter or extra battery. One battery will last you a month. But, I certainly recommend a separate flash for this camera for indoor lowlight setting. Its built in flash light is not sufficient, period.

It still is an excellent camera for someone who shoots in auto-mode 99% of the time, which is me. It will be fun to discover amazing features and manual controls you can deploy. For that I'm ordering a book and will take my time (the camera isn't going anywhere soon).

Even without manual controls and excellent features of the camera, in my opinion, it is worth the money. Because if pictures become part of your memory of priceless moments in your life (including not-so-special everyday moments too), amazing pictures certainly adds to your pleasure each time you revisit those memories.

I was really hesitant prior to spending big dollars on SLR in addition to the portable digital camera I already have, but in looking back, I'm glad I made the decision.

Lots of bang for the $. The SXI is a small stealthy camera that delivers pro quality pictures and attracts little attention to the photographer. The 18-55 IS lens performs very well and adds no bulk to the camera. The built in flash is better than any other I have used. It is powerful and the light is even. The Standard picture setting and the large fine Jpeg setting provides sharp images that require little or no Photoshop work. Buy an extra battery and some 4 gig SD cards. You will love this camera.

Great camera. I am happy with it so far. i fully charged it and it took about 500 photos on that battery. I probably could have taken more but decided to fully charge it up again for the next event. its been a fun starter camera. there is lots to learn and it seems like there will be enough room to grow into. i got the lens kit with it which was a great choice. next items on the list to buy: external flash, filters, additional lens.

The camera is great, but I would recommend an upgrade to an expensive L series lens with IS and USM. The included EF-S 18-55lens is great for casual shooting, I also purchased for a deal the 75 by 300mm lens although my more knowledgeable friends recommended against it. When taking sports shots of the kids on the field, the 75-300mm lens just didn't make the cut. In terms of abes of maine, they have great prices [...] I highly recommend.

This camera is impossible to beat at this price. You can set this camera in fully automatic mode and hand it to a "point and shoot" person, and they will obtain fantastic results. For the amateur photographer, this has all of the bells and whistles.

The kit lens (EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS) is very good for starters. The autofocus and image stabilization work reliably and quickly.

3.0" LCD Panel:. Top that!

Make sure to get a large SD card, 4GB would be OK.

This is a great camera. Mags refer to the Rebel line as "for beginners" but this thing does ALL that I want in a camera. It doesn't have as many FPS as higher $ models but that isn't a requirement with me. It has lots of new features over my old XT - and more resolution. It seems to require higher ISO than the XT. The XSI is light, and a real joy to use. I could not be more pleased.

I decided on this camera after trying to find the most capable higher-end super-zoom camera, like the Canon S5 or newer SX10. Those point and shoot cameras had such shutter lag that I was always missing shots. Getting the XSi kit provided the basic DSLR camera with far greater capabilities than the point and shoots, with the ability to add lenses later. Yes it costs more, but it is far more satisfying taking photos.

I am a huge fan of image stablized lenses now. I wouldn't buy anything less. This lens allows me to take a good handheld shot at 1/10 second without blur. Can't believe the quality of the standard lens.

The answer to my prayers. I was fed-up with typical digital cameras that had a time lag after you pushed the button. I have used various film SLR cameras for years, but found the digital experience to be too convenient to ignore. This is a great camera that does all the things my old SLR's did, and then some. I really like the ability to take multiple action shots, without having an old cumbersome power winder attached to the bottom of my camera. My only objection is the plastic body - is what it is, but does not feel as good as the old metal cased SLR's.
Very versatile, nice having quality interchangeable lenses, and great picture quality!
