As close as you can get to an SLR without all that size/weight/fuss--loaded with easy-to-use features. Great photos--I'm sold on Canon lens quality. The viewfinder and the clear, easily-positioned LCD are great. Auto is easy and provides effective shots. Semi-manual is also easy and provides great results. I'm not an expert by any means, but this camera is teaching me and I'm loving it! I wish is used "regular" batteries.

I made some tests comparing to G10, and G11 is better quality for long focal lenths besides the 10 MPx comparing the 14 Mpx's G10, but in wide angle G10 gives better picture. In very low light situation, G11 is far better than G10. Recommended camera the G11.

If you buy the 1.4x extender, don't buy the filter recommended by the salesman to protect the lens - it doesn't since it fits between the end of the lens and the camera body.
Note that although this camera is slightly larger than most point and shoots, it also has a larger sensor which is why the photos it takes are so superior. but It is still small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or purse and way, way lighter than a DSLR.

I bought a G7 because sometimes I don't want to haul around my bulky professional camera, but I still want near professional images. I moved up from the G7 to the Gll because it was promoted as shooting RAW format images. It wasn't until I started trying to set the image format to RAW that I learned the camera does not shoot RAW in the auto setting. My Nikons do. That said, the camera has proven to be an excellent alternative all around.

I am impressed with the ability of this camera to shoot fantastic shots outside of "auto" mode. The macro function is amazing. It has been great learning all the added adjustments that can be made to make an ordinary picture extraordinary. You can make your shooting experience as simple or as complicated as you like. It is easy to operate, but gives great results!

Flimsy bottons for main control of indexing, just touch it while trying to hold to shoot an it will change the funtion on you! SUCKS!

Less megs, less zoom, LESS OF A CAMERA!

Has no heft or weight or feels like a real camera like the G-10

Overall it is a cheapened version of the G-10 made with plastic an cheap controls

The flip screen is the ONLY feature better than the G-10

The G11 is a great compliment to my Mark III. The Mark III is a great camera, but to heavy to carry around on a daily basis. The G11 allows me to have a camera with me at all times.

My main use is for photos of shelved books. I want titles on spines to be readable, not blurred. Image stabilization makes it really easy. We use the photos in a monthly announcement of our Friends of the Library book sale; to give buyers a chance to see what books are up for sale each month. I LOVE this camera. I'm an amateur photographer, and this camera lets me take good, clear, useful photos.

This is the 4th digital camera I own now and I purchased it because the image quality on my other cameras - all Sony's, were not great, especially in low light. This camera, with its large CCD sensor and latge lens, was supposed to be a solution to this problem. However, the image quality in moderately-low to low lighting scenes is poor and the pixels visibly break down showing grey areas in the image. It is much worse than my Sony DSC-P200, which is 3 years old. With good lighting, the image is very good and the shutter is very fast & responsive.
The camera's body design is ergonomically poor when it comes to holding the camera and the camera is very easy to drop.
The Battery life and the LCD screen are very good.
Manual settings are the main attraction of this camera, although it is not fully manual and the controls are not intuitive.

My wife and I had an old 4 or 5 megapixel camera. With the birth of our first baby boy, we knew that it was time to invest in our memories. I knew/know very little about cameras, so I researched the multitudes that are out there. From all the other major brand names, to pixel count, shutter speeds, ISO, etc, I felt lost. However, 1 camera kept reappearing in all the positive lists, the Canon Powershot G11. As I started to learn all the different functions and the pros/cons of each, I began to realize that the G11 was the ultimate versatile memory maker. Now, after using it extensively taking pictures of my son, I realize that I had made the best of all possible choices. This camera takes pictures that walk right off the page. The clarity is sharp, the colors are exquisite. Furthermore, as I've been learning more about it, the features can get quite advanced if one is so inclined. This is a great camera for amateur or professional alike! When my wife and I are reviewing our son's pictures 40 years from now, we may not remember much, but we will definitely remember that we made one hell of an investment today!

Images seem to have exaggerate colors and light.
Also zoom is only x5 but it is sometimes barely OK.
Camera is fast and very comfortable to use.

i give five stars, but no camera is perfect.

Love the low light capabilities. This makes Christmas memory pictures easy and it handles the indoor low lighting pretty well without the need for flash.

i wish some of the features of the G9 were still around. but i really appreciate Canon not continuing the "more megapixels!" band wagon. by reducing it from 14MP to 10MP they get better image quality and performance.

i would recommend this camera certainly.
very good (semi)-pocket camera. it's a little big, but that's because it has to be to keep its quality.
but don't expect SLR performance in focusing capabilities and the such. that said, it is fun to focus 1cm from the lens in macro.

I am very pleased with this camera.
So far after about one week's use, the only major drawback is the the RAW format. I can't use photoshop's RAW function. The Canon software is interior to PS, and for me, that is a significant drawback, as I was hoping to be able to use the full 10M file.

In low light there is significant grain, but far superior to what I had with the former point-and-shoot, a 80S, which could not be used with anything over 200ISO.
As a second camera, light and handy, I like it. Normally I shoot RAw with a 40D

I love to photograph architecturally interesting buildings, especially if they are well suited to their surroundings. With this camera I can get very good shots of a single building, and then use a wider angle to show how the building fits with the buildings around it (if it does, and many buildings do not). This is the first camera I've owned that can do everything I need without my having to adjust anything manually, plus its zoom capability and/the extra telephoto attachment I bought let me do it from a distance, and also to pick out wonderful details that are hard to see from ground level. I am strictly amateur, and right now I am letting the camera do all the work, though it does everything I've tried so well I am beginning to want to learn how to use more of its features. If I do I may find features that aren't great, that I don't know about now.

I can't wait to use it on castles, cathedrals and art in Spain where I hope to travel next year. And next week our new puppy arrives, and I expect to have a ball photographing him as he gets acquainted with his new doggie and human friends.

My G11 has been a wonderful addition to my photography. I carry nearly 100% of time in truck so that I can leave approximately 25 pounds of slr at home! Sent back LX3 because of limited zoom. Have been happy thus far.

A bit of a background: I attend a lot of concerts, which I like to keep visual-memories of, so I bought the camera mainly for that. Concerts tend to be mainly in the low-light settings with fast-moving subjects (the performers).

Before being referred to the G11, I used the Powershot S5 IS -- mainly because the audio quality in loud settings adjusted properly when video was shot. Also the zoom lens was amazing -- you could be far back into the audience and still get a decent shot of the performer. However the S5 IS's photo quality for low light settings were not as great as I'd hoped, no matter how close you were to the subject, the pixels were a-plenty.

This G11 purchase pretty much solved that noise-problem. The shadows weren't as pixelated when I used the maximum zoom and high ISO, which is what I had hoped for. As for the video, so far I have gone to 2 shows and have been unimpressed. The audio quality can't be adjusted (if it's loud, it stays loud and distorted), but that wasn't what I bought the G11. I bought the G11 for good quality still-photos (not video... concert-attendees who raise their arm filming the whole time are getting to be annoying anyway) for so I'm very happy with the purchase. One of the downsides is the zoom isn't as fast as my S5 IS, so if I missed the performer passing my way, I was out of luck.

Dear Users:

If you are like me, you no doubt want to take great pictures but may be reluctant to buy an SLR, either for financial reasons or just the hassle of hauling all those heavy lenses around where ever you go. The Canon Power Shot G11 to me is the next best thing to an SLR; perhaps even better.

I live in Bangkok Thailand with my family. Thailand is a photographers dream because of the multitude of environments such as the temples, road side street stalls, the general excitement of street life both day and night – then out to the country side for rice fields, Orchid farms etc. etc.

I did not want a camera that I had to change lenses because by the time I set up the shot, the action would be gone. I needed a camera that could deliver in low light situations. Boy did Canon deliver! It not only gave me all of what I was looking for in a simple Power Shot digital camera but went beyond expectations with regard to image quality.

I compared my new G11 with a friend's expensive Canon SLR; let's put it this way, he has already ordered a G11 for himself after being amazed at the performance Cannon's G11 delivers. For me there is no longer a reason for an expensive SLR for a majority of my shooting situations. Now I can achieve the same results without all the extra lenses and accessories common to a good photo system. Want to go fully manual? For those that want to use manual settings - no worries, the G11 has Automatic, Simi Automatic and fully manual capability with intuitive software for ease of use built into the camera.

The freedom is liberating from the cumbersome SLR but at the same time I am confident the shot will turn out the way I intend it to, with striking clarity because of the highly sensitive sensor technology of the G11. This camera has got to be a photo journalists' dream. Thanks Canon, the G11 is truly a superb piece of technology that anyone can use right out of the box.
