Great camera, bought for my trip to Europe because I didn't want to lug around an DSLR, this little camera had all the functions and performance I needed. Low-light performance was good, day shots were great and it was fast enough for me to take two to three shots of a subject matter that is sometimes moving. Some places I did wish I had a wider or longer lens, but that's not the fault of the camera, most of the time I could move my feet to find a shot. It beats anything else I could have fit in my pocket and some I probably couldn't. Occasionally, mostly in low light conditions the AF had a hard time picking things up, but that didn't happen often enough for me to be annoyed.

Was looking for a camera to take to Disney. Wanted a camera that I could slip in my cargo shorts, and took great quality photos especially in low light. I just used this camera on a recent vacation. Honestly , there is a lot to learn about how to use it. So far I basically used it as a point and shoot..and the photos were incredible. It has a lot of mode choices for optimal use...Now I plan to spend some time reading and rereading the manual and trying to learn how to really use it. It is expensive and I was further pushed by salesman to get a add on pack with extra battery and a $50 card. But I think it will eventually be worth every cent!

I scoured the market and then bought this camera to take on a bike trip to France. I had tried a lower end Canon previously and found it lacking. The S90 performed perfectly. My photos were consistently sharp with great color. It's super easy to use. The most pleasant surprise was the high quality video it takes. Far better than my Flip. I didn't expect to use it for that but it's my go to video camera now since it's always handy. I highly recommend.

I just got back from a three week climbing trip in the Waddington Range. This camera worked out great! I was very impressed with the quality of the photos it produced. Many reviews complain about the control ring being loose. It is and Canon knows how to make a good one, but by setting this to the exposure compensation, it was not a big deal. It was easy to handle one handed.

With the Franiec grip, it feels comfortable to hold and very jewel-like. Pleasantly surprised by its many features: f/2 lens, 28-105 zoom, good quality high ISO shots, different modes assignable to front lens ring. I use it for aperture control, the rear ring for exposure compensation. When the big Canon DSLR & lenses are too much, the little S90 is a pleasure. If only it had an optical viewfinder! I don't like to handhold an LCD 8-15 inches out in space, to compose a photo.

For users who like to have manual control over camera features, the S90 is great. The ring control is very intuitive. The size is great for travel.

The camera was purchased to be an all around compact shooter that would do better at indoor parties than most compact cameras. It does do well at this, and is much faster at focusing in low light than many cameras. One nit-pick in this regard is that the auto mode is a little too reluctant to use the flash.

While the zoom is limited, the lens does go wide enough for indoor use, and has a minimal amount of distortion and color fringing. Also, while an F2.0 lens implies great DOF isolation for portrait shots, the fact is that it is no better than most compact cameras in this regard, keeping the background fairly distinct. Not big problems, but possibly reasons to keep the SLR around.

My girlfriend and I both own the Canon PowerShot SD600, which we have been happy with. However, my girlfriend's camera's zoom stopped working recently so I purchased this camera as her birthday present. We have both fallen in love with it. The picture clarity is amazing, even in low light settings. Even though the camera is larger than the PowerShot SD600, it is able to fit in the pockets of my jeans. I brought it to a party this weekend, and it performed remarkably. A few of my friends who photograph as a hobby were impressed by the camera's performance. A couple of them are going to purchase the camera this week.

I bought the camera for occasions when my dSLR is too bulky (trip to Europe) or potentially in harm's way (beach). I wanted as good an image quality as I could get in a small camera. I am very happy with my purchase. I'm a little sorry that the zoom isn't longer, but it's actually pretty decent, and the trade-off on image quality for a longer zoom wasn't worth it to me. The video quality is pretty much irrelevant to me, but might be an argument against this camera for some people. The control dial on the back is indeed loose, as some people have mentioned, but this has not bothered me at all. I did buy the Franiec grip, and I think it is a good addition. Depending on what photographic choices you like to control, you have many options for how to set the camera. If you want to change it on the fly, it's really easy to do that too. The image stabilization seems to work quite well -- so far I've avoided going above ISO 200, and have gotten a lot of really good indoor shots anyway. I guess the only caveat I have is that if you want to insist on dSLR quality, you still need to use a dSLR. But on most shots (not all), this is not far behind dSLRs, in my opinion. I would have given it 4.5 stars if that option were available.

First off, I would like to point out that this camera DOES come with a battery charger [...] Additionally, according to the camera manual, the supplied charger is able to charge the battery in ~2 hours[...]Now, while I have not been able to use this camera extensively (as it just came at the end of last week), I can say that this is a GREAT camera. The combination of the lens, light sensor (both of which are similar to what you might expect to find in an SLR), and image processor creates a camera that can do just about anything that most people could need it to do. It would be nice to have more optical zoom, although that would also increase the thickness of the camera and make the lens stick out even more than it already does. I am really looking forward to getting to know this camera better and utilizing the features. This camera is a bridge camera, and from what I can tell, it is probably one of the better ones for people looking to learn how to use the adjustability features of an SLR, but aren't ready to give up the compact camera size. It seems like it would also make a pretty decent pocket camera for SLR users looking for a camera where they won't have to sacrifice all of the adjustability of the SLR.

What a great camera. It takes great pictures with beautiful colors. The auto mode is good for people like me. And it has a number of manual functions I can use to start learning about photography.

Its only fault is the lack of HD video and the flash is also awkwardly placed.

With a couple of minor changes this could be the perfect camera. The next generation of cameras have come and this one feels a little dated.

I had the lumix lx3 for a few weeks, and found that the canon s90 is much more user-friendly (and has the same features as the lx3) and has better quality pictures - especially in low light. Recently took 4th of July fireworks pictures and they turned out stellar, both using the low-light function and the fireworks setting.

This camera outperforms all digital compacts that I have used and operates at par with entry-level digital SLRs.
In a bind, I recently used this camera to shoot a friend's wedding and continue to receive compliments on the result - the photos were ultimately printed and came out flawless (8x10 and larger)

The manual ISO and shutter speed control is really just the icing on the cake, as the automatic setting [and scenes] reveal spectacular results.

My only complaints relate to the finish on the plastic body, which tends to retain oil from the hands (and become slippery), and the viewing screen, which attracts fingerprints, making viewing in sunlight difficult.

I would (and do) recommend this camera to anyone looking for a digital compact OR an entry-level digital SLR. It is well worth the price.

The camera is AWESOME! As a former SLR film user I am astounded by the great flexibility in aperture or shutter speed priority shots. Combined with the great zoom, you have endless options for capturing "the perfect shot". Easy to use controls, plus great pre-sets, make this a great option for all but the most hard-core photographers. This camera has re-lit my desire to pursue photography as a serious hobby.

i take tons of pictures of 2 toddlers, mostly not standing still enough to take a good picture with other cameras. this camera takes clear, crisp, beautiful pictures, even when the kids are moving around and in poor lighting conditions. when dark, takes PERFECT pictures, even with no flash. Surprisingly good image quality even in low light situations, as long as you don't leave the camera in P or Auto modes. Select aperture & ISO and you can get some very nice low light shots at ISO 400 or below even hand held. This is much better than the other pocket cameras I have experienced over the years. I would definitely buy this one if you know how to use a camera and want to do more than just snapshots. It doesn't have DSLR image quality, but it's a big step up from other small sensor cameras.

I have owned many compact cameras--mostly Canon Digital Elph series cameras. They are not the best cameras, but they are small, attractive, and have decent picture quality. However, the biggest problem of small, compact cameras is that they perform very poorly under low lighting conditions. Even the high-end compact cameras tend to produce poor quality flash shots and indoor shots.

I bought a Panasonic DMC-LX3 last year to upgrade my aging Canon SD900. LX3 is a nice camera, and produces excellent images indoors and outdoors. However, LX3 is a little too big for my liking (especially protruding lens), and its lens cover is cumbersome to use. Thus, I decided to give S90 a try as it is somewhat smaller and has a built-in lens cap.

So far I am quite happy with this camera. It is small enough to carry in my pocket (when used without a case), and produces good images. Particularly, it produces decent indoor photos (both with and without flash). The image stabilization is fairly good, and it has more options than an average compact camera user needs.

However, it has several drawbacks. First, the built quality is not up to par with compatible camera. For example, LX3 is in the same price range, but it is built much better. Second, the pop-up flash is not so user-friendly. You should not block the pop-up flash, but it is very hard to hold the camera without blocking the pop-up flash (and I don't have large hands either). This may be unavoidable due to the size of the camera. Nonetheless, this is quite annoying. Finally, the controls are not always user-friendly and the selection nobs are a little too tight to operate.

Overall, I think this is a nice compact camera that is better than most compact cameras I've used.

This is as good as pocket cameras get right now. It produces clean, beautiful images free of the splotchy noise that lesser cameras tend to create and, among other things, this means you can crop images a lot smaller than you'd be able to get away with in other compact cameras. You'll also be able to get really wonderful low-light photos as long as you don't zoom in. Finally, the control dials make it super easy to quickly adjust your settings once you get used to them, though admittedly this could take awhile. It's not the most comfortable camera to hold, but it will fit in most jeans pockets, which is pretty awesome for a camera of this caliber.

What you can't really do well with this camera--much like any other pocket camera--is take action photos. Most shots of kids and pets, for instance, will turn out blurry--again, much like any pocket camera. It's entirely up to you whether the S90 is worth its steep price given that it falls short of SLR-grade performance and is merely capable of superb image quality. But if you have a discerning eye when it comes to IQ and keep your expectations in line, you'll probably love it.

As with all cameras you get out what you put in.
'Out of the box' shots are good, but taking the time to learn the ins and out of the camera really pay dividends.

This camera performs exceptionally well at high ISO settings and in low light. The picture quality is outstanding and Menu's are clear and to the point, offering a short description of each menu item and what it means. I'd recommend this to any experienced digital point-and-shoot user, but probably not to my grandparents, if you catch my drift! It has great advanced settings and use of the programmable control ring is an asset.

Pro: image quality is OK (although not as good as expected from reviews).
Cons: Slow. Takes long time to focus, continuous shooting is only 1.5 fps, true continuous shooting is for JPEG only, with RAW it stops in 3-4 frames. Inconvenient ring near the "set" button, it cannot be reprogrammed and slight accident touch changes exposure setting.
Noise level is worse than expected. Overpriced.

I was looking for better replacement for my old Sony Cybershot DSCP200, but found my old Sony camera is smaller, faster and more convenient. Canon S90 has slightly better image quality than my old Sony Cybershot (the only advantage).

This little gem is so much fun to use you just want to grab it and go. It has so many phenomenal features that you can take hours just "playing " with it. I am a manual reader (female) just to get the most out of a complicated piece of machinery, but this little baby is almost self-instructive. Buy it. If you're ready to spend $300, go the extra mile and get a real camera. Take indoor pics w/o a flash. It's $400 well spent. Yes, the G-11 is wonderful, but it's really too big. Abe's got the cam to me in under 48 hours. That's crazy!!!!

For vacation photos in situations where a DSLR is too much of a burden, the S90 is a surprisingly-effective substitute. Low light performance is quite good and the F 2.0 glass is decent. Debating S90 v. G11 and I'm glad I opted for this camera. It is what a P&S should be--very compact. G11 is great but way too large for my needs. I travel a lot and prefer not to take my dSLR. The S90 has everything and more that my Rebel XT has. Lag will be there, no doubt. But for travel this cannot be beat. I cannot wait to take it to Costa Rica this summer. Abe's Rocks too!

Great all-around pocket camera-better & easier to use than Lumix or Leica. Camera used at f/2 50% of the time. Great (short) zoom range; longer or shorter would be useless to me. Image stab allows easy 1/4sec exposures. ISO 80-400 yields great images; beyond that, image quality degrades fast. Not a problem, though w/fast lens + image stab. Haven't used flash, & likely won't, excpt maybe syncro in bright sun. Shutter lag is approx 1/2sec, but predictable & one can learn to be 'ahead' of the action enough for it not to be a big problem. A hot shoe is sorely missed; I'd use w/optical viewfinder & pro strobe if it had one. Overall, the S90 is one of the best small pro-level cameras I've owned.

Love that you can take images in RAW format. Has great features like black and white photo with one chosen color option, in-screen zoom, auto bracketing, complete ability to manually operate, and ability to produce high quality photos up to 16" x 20" print size. Excellent camera, especially for the price, was surprised that such quality pictures and advanced features could come in such a compact camera.

Recently took stills and videos from a 43rd floor office behind the New Year's ball in Times Square on New Year's Eve. Used both low light and program mode. Exposures were spot on and the video of the ball dropping was excellent.
Also took available light picture of antique cars indoors. Wide angle and F2 lens made for great shots.

Goes anywhere, the concept of the best camera being the one that is always available applies here. I have no trouble with the controls, or the ergonomics in general. I do however believe medium size hands (or smaller) with good dexterity help. An individual with large hands and two left thumbs might say something else. I love to catch early morning and evening landscape shots and the S90 is always there.

Having been traveling around for the past year, it got to the point that I was not taking any pics because it was such a pain to take my SLR, extra lenses and a flash with me every where. The s90 fits in my pocket, is great for a quick snapshot, and for storing family memories. It has almost no shutter lag and and the resolution and manual controls are great, but it is not an SLR. If takes great pics but does not replace my bigger camera and its plethora of lenses and accessories. But again, the s90 is easy to take around, my SLR is not.

Great camera for low light/indoors. Once you familiarize yourself with the quick settings, it's a super fun camera to use. If you're an avid photographer, but hate carrying your clunky DSLR around, this is the perfect camera. Battery life is not so great- always carry a fully charged back-up battery so that you don't miss a shot.

I bought this camera for the fast lens, small size, and raw. I wasn't sure about the picture quality and how good the JPEGs were.

Now that I have taken a few pictures all of the above meet or exceed my expectations. I love this camera. How good JPEGs come out is extremely important to me. You can't shoot all raw and then spend time converting. The only time should be when a picture really needs an exposure adjustment.

The quality of the pictures out of the box are great. I like the color and skin color of Canons versus the Panasonics. I find the skin color of the panasonics cold and pink. I prefer the color quality of Canon cameras.

This is a terrific point & shoot with the ability to get "deep" into the setup to adjust may settings if you want to take more control. Picture quality is excellent and the focus the very quick. Construction is very solid.

My complaints: the position of the pop-up flash is annoying. The flash pops up right where you would steady the camera with your left hand, leaving less than a finger's width on the left side. Also if you have larger hands, the camera can be tiring to operate one handed for a long time. The small programmable wheel on the back of the camera is perfectly placed to be accidentally moved by your thumb. Lastly it is unfortunate that the movie res is not HD.

We were luck to get this camera before our trip to Disney in October, 2009 and ended up taking 530+ pic with it.

It's a pretty sweet camera. I addressed a couple features in a blog [@] but for the most part I am happy with it. The battery doesn't last after taking an hour time lapse video. I've learned the hard way twice now. I'd buy it again for sure. It's better than my old G10.
