I used an SLR for many years, but switched to a small digital camera to learn the medium. After being frustrated by not having a powerful zoom lens or control over aperture or speeds, I started shopping for a compromise.

I looked at many different brands and models, and thought this P80 met my needs. It exceeded my expectations. Yes, the manual may be long by most standards, but it explained every question I had about every feature, giving me the chance to experiment thoroughly before taking it on a New England vacation. (Plus, the manual is written in clear English, not English translated from...)

I took most of my vacation pictures on the "scenic" setting and got great shots of both scenery and people. And the color was true.

With a Mac computer running OSX or later, iPhoto will recognize the camera-to-computer connection instantly. No need to use the downloading CD included with the camera.

For me, this is the best of both SLR & digital worlds. I'm glad I waited until I found this camera.

I use the camera daily (or close to it!) It takes great photos most of the time. It is light weight and is very flexible as far as taking everything from telephoto back to wide angle. It takes great family action pictures (kids and basketball, track, etc). I would recommend that you purchase a spare battery.

I wanted a simple to use snap and shoot camera with a good zoom and high quality pictures for taking nature shots in my backyard, etc. I have not had the P80 for a long time, but at this point it is everything that I have waited so long to purchase. I would definitely recommend the camera.

I love the huge lens and the ability to get some amazing close-ups from such a small camera. It is lightweight so I can take it anywhere with me. I mostly use this camera for still life shots, or portraits, but it is also a good all around camera as well.

I've only had it a short time, but love it so far. Can't wait to take it on vacation. It's small enough to carry without being a burden. The focus distance is great for me - mostly taking pictures of kids, sports, vacations, landscapes, etc.

The only complaint I have is that when it is turned on, the lens immediately pops out and you have to make sure you take the manual lens cover off. Would be great if it came with built in lens cover.

I bought two of these cameras for use by my yearbook students. The ease of use, and the high quality/high resolution of the camera are wonderful! We already had a Nikon D40 SLR, and it now sits on the shelf because this P80 has much of the same functionality, including 18x optical zoom, and is much easier to use. The only downside is that when using the zoom, one must be very careful to hold still, otherwise you're likely to end up with blurry photos.

The true test will be in the summer when I try to capture some barefoot & race day photos. It's been great in the snow and cold. Battery life seems to be quit long too. I haven't had to charge it yet and I've taken to several below zero events and no problem. It would be great if they gave wallet size "key" to what all the options are on the dial. Overall a great buy.

I have used this camera to take pics of my pet, on the move, as well as portrait type pics. We also took landscape pic and sunset pics. They all turned out wonderful. The only thing I would change is the flash, it doesn't pop up automatically, but the button for the flash is in a convenient place so it's really not that big a deal.

Maybe I just got a bad camera, after all, it is a Nikon. I had to return mine because of stripes in close-up photos and the zoom mechanism seemed a little shakey. I should have spent the extra bucks for a true SLR digital camera such as the Nikon D-60 or Canon Rebel XSi.[...]

I purchased this camera to have on a recent trip. My wife wanted a point and shoot camera, I wanted one that had flexibility to take pictures in a variety of lighting and motion situtions. We were both very pleased with the results of our pictures. From taking pictures indoor without a flash to taking pictures against a bright sky, we both were able to take great photos.

This digital camera is awesome. It was definitely worth its price. We used it for our Las Vegas vacation and even got excellent shots from our window view on the main strip. We also used the P80 for taking pictures of fireworks on January 1st, and the fireworks came out clear and in vibrant color. What I love most is that the pictures are never blurry even when you take pictures of action shots.

The only feature I miss from my cooplix 8700 that the P80 don't have is the movility of its lcd wich was smaller but it helped to take pictures from varous position. Other than that it has been improved significally. Nikon quality as allways

The camere and its zoom is only usable in bright sunny conditions outside. If that is your only purpose of having camera, than it's great buy. Once you try using this in house or in slightly worse light conditions it is useless. Zoom at maximum is usable only with tripod as the lens is not fast enough to make still pictures. High ISO settings on this camera are joke, my 6 year old canon rebel performs better at ISO 800, forget about going to 6000.

A casual enthusiast of photography, i used this camera in normal daylight and night mode. the night mode quality is way better than any other camera. A good battery life, excellent picture quality, Great zoom.

You have to spend a little time with the manual. I had a previous model Nikon and the controls are in different places and so are some of the menu functions. But the zoom is spectacular, image quality is sensational -- we went on vacation and when we got back I popped the camera card in our plasma -- totally beautiful, not a hint of grain.

Great lens, great color, excellent reproduction of what I see through either veiwfinder.

You can shoot aperture control, shutter speed control, manual, video, sport sequence. It picks up and focuses on multiple faces in portrait modes. The flash is really strong but can be a little bright in some settings, washing out some colors.

It's much much faster than my older Nikon, especially with the fast SD card I bought with it.

All in all, this is just a really beautiful camera. Like I said, why buy an SLR?

Super zoom and great resolution made my sky scenery photos look like those posted in BBC website! It is great for outdoors and travelling.

Also, the multiple scenery mode provided makes it a lot of fun, and performs quite well for most cases such as marco, copy mode, landscape, night scene, etc.

Also, it is smaller than I thought, and quite light refers to weight. Battery life is good too. It also provides manual mode, which is ideal for semi-pro photographers to practice.

Only cons I found: picture is shaky when you shoot with 18x zoom but without a tripod.

I've had this camera for about a month, and I love it. It's easy to use, without reading any directions. The pictures are fantastic. I am thrilled with the zoom feature, as well as the LCD panel. I am having so much fun taking pictures! The lens cap is a bit cheap and clumsy, but I can live with it. Great camera for a great price!

I use it to record the blood clotting experiment.
The picture are beautiful and accurate.
Resolution is good enough to find the clotting.
The only con. is shutter and forcus slow.

Sports mode is great, especially while shooting wildlife. Excellent 18x zoom. Seems to take a bit too long to capture picture. Overall, great camera.

Under the proper conditions, this camera takes beautiful pictures. Outside in bright light or with the flash, the pictures are exceptional with good resolution, great color and clarity. The camera can be somewhat sluggish on overall speed and the low light performance is very poor. But with that I couldn't give this camera up because the general pictures were so stunning.

Battery that came with camera has a short life when fully charged, thus, a second one is recommended. At 18X zoom, images are blurred, camera is not really meant for that. If you want clear zoom shots, opt for an SLR. Also, wish the screen flipped out and rotated for those difficult pet shots. I take photos at my local animal shelter and this would be a very handy feature. Not excellent in low light, but still pretty good. Also wish the photos would auto rotate on their own when you flip the camera on its side and take shots, it does not, and you have to use the rotate feature to do this. Unfortunately, when you select rotate, you have to scan through the photos from one end or the other to get to the photo you want to rotate. But, overall this camera is simple to use and recommended for the non-fully zoomed in shots.

Took me a while to "dial in" on this camera, since I'm an SLR photog. Got some great shots, and the camera is small, so it's easy to travel with. Not as rugged as I had expected, but the pics were good. I do prefer my digital SLR for super quality shots, however.

I have done lot of research before i ordered for Nikon P80. I was only looking for SLR camera Nikon D40, D60 etc. and while going through the reviews of these SLR cameras I came across P80. I found most of the features of P80 good enough for my usage. I have used 2 different Sony Digital cameras within the same price range (do not remember the model names) in last 4 years but this one is really good. Battery that comes with camera is good enough for up to 100 snaps if charged full. I was suggested by AOM people to take extra battery but I didn't go for it thinking I can buy later if needed and now I feel I don't need an extra battery.

I purchased this product due to the Nikon name. Unfortunatly it's been disappointment. I am on my second P80 and both have had the exact same problem. There seems to be a mechanical problem with the lense where it seems to be out of align. Additionally, there is a lot of noise in lense when extending at power on. Finally, the zoom is so touchy it's difficult to set the focus point that you want. Nikon states this line of cameras has no problems, but like I said this is the 2nd consecutive P80 that I have had this happen right out of the box. Buyer beware and use caution before buying.

I have tried this camera in different settings - camping, weddings, scenery, athletic events- and found that it lacks shutter speed. The only way to get decent action and night pics was by using movie mode. For camping it was a good pick because the different modes for sunset and beach made the pictures on and around the lake really jump. For weddings, not so much. Again, the slow shutter caused me to miss a lot of great shots. For the money, I think that Nikon could do better. I got a much better performance with my daughters Pentax E40 Digital camera, at a much more reasonable price.

Great picture quality, but has problems shooting into bright lights. Seems the video chip freaks out if it sees the sun or a headlight, and puts streaks across the picture. Very good taking fast multiple-frame pictures, but takes so long writing to the memory that you have to wait over a minute to take another picture. Also, will only shoot about a second and a half at the hightest fps.

Unbelievable features for the money. Wide-angle to telephoto in a single lens a big plus. Lighter than expected. Video quality good but not great (see [...]. Wish flash defaulted to flash=on when flash is flipped up instead of "auto." Panorama "stitch" feature is amazing. Can't imagine what else I'd want in a camera.
