This is a great all purpose camera for travel and garden shots. I have taken it to the ocean (great shots) and used it in my garden for close ups. Portraits are terrific. There's a lengthy menu: backlit, beach or snow, portrait, landscape, night, dawn, sunset, museum.

I owned a Coolpix ten years ago and was never happy with the Canon Powershot replacement.

Experimentation in the different modes is necessary to understand what mode will yield the desired results. Shooting in low light and having an auto-focus that is sharp and responsive takes a lot of experimentation.

I am very pleased with the Nikon S8000. I previously owned a Canon P&S which ate batteries, was very slow on the lag time, indoor shots were yellowed and discolored, and the zoom became fuzzy after several years of use. So these were the points that I was looking for in a new camera. The Nikon shots are clear and concise, indoor with correct settings are bright, colors are great, lag time is quick and the optical zoom is very sharp. The battery that came with the kit depleted with under 150 shots. That is my only disappointment, but it may be a defective battery as well. The camera is user friendly with several modes to choose from. I am enjoying "practicing" using different applications! The smart photo smile detector if unbelievable! As a scrapbooker, I am always looking for sharp, well-defined pictures with true color and this new Nikon S8000 is just what I was looking for!

I bought this camera after my favorite old Canon camera died. I was looking for a camera with high resolution, good optical zoom, wide angle potential, good shutter response and long rechargeable battery life. After reading dozens of reviews, I finally found a camera that scored favorably in all these categories for a decent price. So far the quality of pictures has been great, and I even am using the HD video function which I didn't think I would bother with because it is so easy to use and shoots such good quality video. The camera is stylish, controls intuitive, and quality very satisfying. I would highly recommend this camera.
