I bought this camera specifically to use on vacation, mostly on a waverunner and in a moving car. On autodetect scene mode, it did great focusing out a moving car, detecting the correct scene to get the most of my pictures and on detecting moving objects like an eagle that flew over my head. I like the small compact body. Hovever, I found the position of the flash (right at the top left hand side) to be cumbersome. In low light when you need the most stability you can not hold the camera with two hands. I also do not like that when shooting video, your right thumb covers the speakers( top right hand corner of view window side) when holding the camera, again making it difficult to place your fingers for use of the camera. The BATTERY is HORRIBLE, only lasts about 100 pictures on high res then has to be CHARGED IN THE CAMERA. How ridiculous is that? You have to put the camera away in order to charge the battery unless you have one or more back up batteries. All in all, I like the camera for the HD video and for general use. If I want really great pictures I will use my SLR and special lenses.

The Nikon Coolpix S8000 is a fantastic camera. 4th of July fireworks shots were excellent. The 300mm zoom is fantastic.
Be sure to get a good quality view screen kit to apply a protective film as the screen scratches by looking at it.

Recommended for basic use. As of now not able to shoot video thru it. I need to study it and then can give comments on it ...Overall a good basic cam. Bit costly...but after all Nikon is Nikon..
