Comments about Nikon D40 with 18-55mm Lens (non-VR)& 55-200mm AF-S DX Zoom Lens:

The Nikon D40 is exactly what the price indicates: it is an entry-level DSLR. I am a casual photographer, and it is enough for me to use it with my F/1.8 lens manually to get nice portraits. One note: this doesn't auto focus AF lenses, only AF-S. AF-S has the motor in the lens, so they are more expensive. So think about this before you get this camera. What you could save on the body, you could end up spending to get that more expensive lens. Just food for thought.

Good product, the build could have been little beter. Some of the controls specific to a SLR like aperture, shutter controls should have been explained in the Manual.
Photo quality is awsome.

It's Okay
By nicknameVerified Reviewer from Connecticut on 3/17/2009
Pros:
Great Image Quality
Cons:
Exposed LCD
Describe Yourself:
Semi-pro Photographer

Comments about Nikon D40 with 18-55mm Lens (non-VR)& 55-200mm AF-S DX Zoom Lens:

Shutter release is not on top of the camera where the forefinger naturally rests. LCD is much too big, left fingers cover it, all info is in the viewfinder anyway. Body and lens are all plastic, much too light for stability, anti-vibe software is a poor substitute for physical vibration absorbtion. Autofocus is fast, color accuracy is excellent.

Comments about Nikon D40 with 18-55mm Lens (non-VR)& 55-200mm AF-S DX Zoom Lens:

Easy to use. Set it on automatic and my wife merely has to pick it up and shoot like our old point and shoot, only now, she gets the picture instead of what happened two seconds later. I can switch to program or manual and adjust F stops and shutter speed, not to mention ISO sensitivity, to capture what I actually see without a flash blowing out all the atmospheric ambiance. What’s not to like?

After having 2 Digital point shoot Cameras this is my first DSLR. I wanted a entry level DSLR and I could not be happier. I have had it for a little over a month and have allready shot over 2000 images of Landscapes,Portraits,Sports, and Abstract images .The images are so clear and sharp. I am now hooked,I wish I had gotten the D40 a couple of years ago.

This replaced several other point and shoot digitals as well as a traditional SLR. It is very easy to take great pictures in fully automatic mode yet is easy to go fully manual.
