This is my first time with a SLR camera, so I've only used the various auto modes so far. I've taken awesome action pictures at my daughter's track meets and some nice parade pictures on a bright, sunny day. I'm having fun with it and only wish I'd bought it sooner.

I am an artist using this camera to photograph artwork in studio lighting conditions. I'm very happy with the images I am getting and the camera's feature set is excellent. It has the same sensor as the D90 but for the money, this camera was the right choice for me. You can put a grid onto the viewfinder, which is great when photographing paintings and drawings.

I'm still learning all the features but I think this would be a great camera for anyone looking to get a first DSLR without breaking the bank.

I'm only giving it 4 stars now because I have not yet learned to use all the features.

I am using this as a casual photography, liked the auto scene where it explains each and every environment that is set.

I love the video quality and that too within a SLR. Very easy and comfort for first time users.

I did not find a flaw expect for the LCD screen and that is acceptable since it is a tilt.

Bought this to take some better quality photos of my 16 month old daughter - had no idea how much better the images would be compared to my old point and shoot Canon and Sony Cameras. Even in auto mode, it is fast (once I set the focus), easily keeping up with wherever my daughter is headed! My wife was skeptical at first, a bit daunted by the features, but now she loves it. Needed a 16 gig card to keep up with all of her shots.

I've used the camera to capture pictures of my 1 year old, they came out awesome. The only issue I've is the flash, guess I'll have to get additional flash for taking pictures in low light.

I have used the D5000 for outdoor scenic shots and panoramas as well as indoor people and pet photos. Close-ups (within ") showed good detail for an 18-55mm lens too. When I showed off my first photos with the camera, people said "Wow!"

I love this camera. I am new to DSLR so I was looking for a camera that would be both easy to use and learn. This has done both. I love the tilt/swivel screen because I have a young child and I don't have to worry about him scratching or ruining the screen because I can just turn it in. I love how crisp and brilliant the colors are in the pictures, no matter where I am. Many reviews for the camera I found thought the battery wasn't lasting long enough, but I have found that it works great for me. I'm not on 3 hour photo shoots though, so I wouldn't know about that. But for the beginner or photo enthusiast I highly recommend this camera. Though, if you have the money...I would get one or two additional lenes. The kit lens works great for learning how to use your camera and get into photography, but I am learning that it won't take all the shots I'm wanting. But other than that it is the best camera and I'm super pleased.

My Camera is Awesome! I love the feel and mold of this camera. It fits in your hand and never gets heavy. One con is there is no LCD view find at odd angles. So if the camera is shooting up and I have the view finder out to see I have to snap the picture to see where the camera is facing, adjust, and take another photo. Other than that this camera is incredible.

I got the camera to be able to take casual photos of the family and once I learn what I'm doing work into taking more professional photographs. I have thoroughly enjoyed the camera. I'm not familiar with DSLR cameras at all and have found this very easy to handle and operate. I would def reccommend this item for others.

My first SLR camera and I was intimidated. What a surprise when I could use it right out of the box as a "point and shoot". I'll learn the rest of the fantastic things it can do as time allows. I have used it for a wedding and to shoot wildlife--it can even capture the details of a bird's wings in flite--and that's in the point and shoot mode. Quality of the photos is amazing.

"I have purchased this camera in feburary and haven't been able to put it down since. In every way I've tested it, I have been tremendously pleased with the results. I'm an amatuer by all means, never having used a DSLR, and yet on my first time out with this camera I was taking stunning pictures.

What's great about it: Easy of use, versatility, quality of photographs, battery life

What's not so great: Included camera strap MUST be connected correctly to avoid camera falling off...

My only quibble might be the 5 minute max. limit on HD video recordings. Still, the vast majority of this type of recording I might use it for would be short clips.

I absolutely love the 4-5 shots per second this camera is capable of. I can't begin to tell you how many lost shots I used to have with a digital that just wasn't ready to shoot in rapid order. The speed is of course dependent on the flash and battery refresh time, but most times I am shooting in ambient light or in a well-lit outdoor scenario.

The price was the best part - under $800 for the camera and the extra telephoto lens, including the bag. I only wish I'd gotten the VR version of the telephoto.

I'm looking forward to purchasing accessories (lens, filters, tripod, flash and remote) and would definitely recommend this camera to anyone who wants GOOD pictures every time."

Overall the D5000 is a very good camera. The controls are easy to manipulate so that you can get the camera to do what you want. However, the camera appears to have been planned and put together rather haphazardly making for a cramped and oddly unbalanced feel.

Recently we visited Disney World and Miami and I took some great photographs. I was very pleased with the performance. I am little suspicious about the battery performance but not sure at this time - still investigating. Over all a good camera for entry level DSLR enthusiasts.

The camera is awesome; I spent alot of time researching which dslr to get and this one beat the cannon tsi, (it made an annoying noise everytime it would focus, but the lcd screen was nice). This nikon only fallback is the lcd screen, (its hard to tell the quality of the picture you just took, but with that said when you do put it on a big screen monitor you will be amazed with the picture quality). Overall I am very satisfied with the camera.

This camera is excellent for anyone starting off with photography or semi-experts. It has a lot of great features, excellent picture quality, and you can't beat the price. I use it mainly for outdoor photography and live band shots. I got an extra lens for the band shots as well as a fisheye lens, and both work great with it.

We do a lot of traveling, and two people on our last trip had this camera. They got tons of great pictures. We investigated upgrading or older camera (another great one, but outdated), spoke to several people and checked reviews. Several serious and semi-pro photographers recommended the D5000, so we ordered one.

We're still learning all the ins-and-outs before our next trip, but have gotten some fantastic shots of hummingbirds, flowers, and flying insects as practice.

Especially nice is the flip-out LCD monitor for taking shots at awkward angles. We don't use it often, but it's a really useful thing to have when needed (our old camera has this feature).

Also recommend getting the VR (vibration reduction) lenses. There was a noticeable removal of shakiness in using our old camera with no stabilization and the D5000 with a VR lens at about the same magnification.

So far the only disadvantage (if you can call it that) is there are so many different options it's hard to learn how to engage all of them with the buttons and menu combinations. But it's also fantastic just as a point and shoot camera, so we'll improve as we learn more.

My first experiences with the D5000 were with my kitten Muffin. She is highspeed drama and this camera can capture every bit it easily. I take it to my son's soccer games and get all the fast moving shots that I used to miss with delay issues etc. This camera performs like a dream. I would recommend the D5000 to anyone. If you are a beginner it will grow with you and if you been taking pictures for years like me, you will be out of your mind happy! By the way the clarity is AMAZING.
