Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I had been debating which camera to upgrade to for quite sometime. I had a point and shoot camera, but missed shots because of slower shutter speeds. I know that this is to be expected with point and shoot cameras, but I had several instances where the pictures were not as clear as I would have liked. Having three small children, we take a lot of photos. I researched many DSLR camera bodies before deciding on the Nikon D90. I am more than happy with this camera. We no longer miss shots, and the picture quality is unbelievable. The best thing about the camera is that it allows me to try so many things that I could not do before, but still has the auto focus option, which is what I use most often. It does have a video camera option built in. It is certainly not a teplacment for your current video camera. It is ok for small video shots, but they are not very clear, like most cameras that have a video option. All in all, I would say that I Love this camera and would suggest this
unit to most anyone, especially if you take a great deal of photos.

I use this camera for almost all my photographic needs. It is an excellent product for me because I have switched to it from D70. I did have to learn many new things because D90 is a much more advanced camera. The image quality is very good and functions like D-lighting are spectacular. Live image display is great and the movie mode is an excellent addition to the DSLR.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I have been playing around with point and shoot cameras for years and have always been happy, but I recently borrowed my friends DSLR for a week to just play around with it. After that short time, I decided I needed my own.

I tried out a lot of DSLR cameras at or slightly above entry-level and I really just felt the most comfortable with the Nikon D90. It seemed to have the easiest to use controls and when I compared the shots I took with comparable cameras, the Nikon always took a better shot even when all of the setting and lenses were the same.

I have been using the Nikon D90 for a month now and it all that I hoped for and more. It makes taking great photos super easy. A nice bonus with the camera is that it is easy for my wife to use too. She can set it on any of the presets and she doesn't have to think about how to take a picture.

I have owned the D70 since 2005 and it still works like the day I got it after over 30,000 photos. When the D90 came out it had so many imporvements over the D70 I just jad to have it. ANd what a great camera it is. If you do not need the larger (and much more expensive) FX chip the D90 is the way to go. It is by far the best DX format (smaller chip) on the market at any price.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

Very good quality as most Nikons are. Very good construction vice the Nikon 5000. If you are a beginner then you need something like "D90 for Dummies". It takes a while to learn how to use the D90 unless you always "shoot" in the auto mode. My take is "the more you learn about the D90 the more you like it". Only had mine two weeks and still learning. Abes of Maine was very helpful with my selection...Good folks!!

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

This camera starts up real fast and it's ready to shoot. The menus are easily customizable and once set its ease of use is rectified. I'm using an old Nikon lens which I use with my N80 Film SLR as well as an old speedlight. They are both compatible and that's what I like most about this camera. I did not waste my previous investment with another one. The picture quality is pristine. I compared it with my nephew's Canon Rebel and it is no comparison. Autofocusing even with my old lense is no problem. Out of the hundred pictures I shot only one was out of focus and that was because the subject suddenly and abruptly moved. Overall, the Nikon D90, as what previous professional review says, is a Nikon D300 except for its price. Only downside is its weight but I guess its because of its solid built. It is a camera for all occasions.

doing baseball shots of 13-14 yr. olds, the D70 would miss focus on 1-3 frames of a 10-15 frame burst.
The D90 did not miss focus on any of those same pictures. the last 2 games I shot with the D90, added up to approx. 58oo frames of which I placed 5700+ on my web site. I must also add the D70 I replaced had over 150000+ frames taken in less than 5 years. focusing of the D90 is flawless, frame burst on 1 seq. was well over 40 frames and the camera did not stop. avg. 4-6 frames per second. kudos to Nikon !!!
happy with the camera, but I expected no less.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

Excellent camera, well worth upgrade.
Great looking images, fast focus even with my zooms.
I'm completely impressed with the power of the camera.
Even though the salesperson will strongly urge to buy a second battery, it's really not needed. This one last a very long time, even when using the LCD or taking video.

Note: I strongly suggest reading the manual, even if you are a previous user of Nikon cameras. Factory shipped with some settings that I think most would find annoying. Continuous shooting is off by default. File naming defaults back to 0001 each time you clear the memory card, so you end up with duplicate file names. This can be changed in the menus.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I was using a Nikon D70 for the last 4.5 years. It died at the end of a photo shoot of a horse. Fortunatly the photos were good. It had a fatal error and had to be sent back to the Nikon repair center. As this is a problem with some D70's they repaired it for free and have just returned it after close to three weeks with an upgraded software installed. In the meantime I was dead in the water at the height of foaling horses and selling horses (not good). I quickly contacted Abe's and had a new Nikon D90 sent to me in 48 hours. The upgrade to the D90 is incredible. Though I am happy to still have my beloved D70, it is hard to imagine a better camera than the D90. Stunning photos and in my opinion the white balance is superior to the D70. This is important to me as I take a lot of photos of horses that have large areas of white on them. If you have a D70 and are thinking about an upgrade - Just Do It!

Debated between this and the Canon 50D and ultimately went with the Nikon. I couldn't be happier. I had been shooting an Olympus E-500 for the past three years and noise in low light had been an issue. No porblems with the D90, even at higher ISOs. Most features are at your finger tips and it is easy to use. The only knock I have is that the shutter is a little noisy, but not a big issue. Well, that and the Nikon glass I want to buy is expensive.

Very happy and would buy it again.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I had a Nikon D70 which served me well for years, unfortunately it broke. I considered a D40, but as my friend the photographer suggested, the d40 is a nice point and shoot so after a fair amount of research I decided to go for it. This turned out to be a good move. This camera is fast, great controls and fantastic images. The only thing that isn't so interesting is live view, I thought I would use it more. As much as critics degrade the movie mode, it actually works well. It wont replace your Sony HD camcorder, but it is good for those quick video clips.

If your on the fence, get one! You'll be happy you did.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

This is my first SLR camera. I have used a Nikon Coolpix 5700 for last 6 years so upgrading was easy as some of the controls were similar. What a camera! I use it with the Nikon 18-200 Telephoto lens and the first pictures I took at my daughters basketball game were amazing. Apart from the flexibility this camera gives you over the "point and shoot" models is the incredible pictures it takes in low light settings without a flash (which was my biggest complaint with the Coolpix). I have friends who use both Nikon and Canon so I got recommendations for both. I went down to local retail store and tried both brands with the lens or similar that I stated above. The Nikon felt most comfortable in my hands.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

As many other reviews confirm, this is a good digital camera. After buying mine, however, I was disappointed to find that Nikon provides very poor support to users who do any kind of software post-processing with their pictures.

Nikon again changed the file format for this camera versus older models. As a result, most of the software you have probably won't work. Not only do you need the newest versions of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements if you're using Adobe products (ok, Nikon might argue that's Adobe's problem, but then, they provide no support to Adobe) - but wait, even your own Nikon software may not work at all! Neither the older Nikon Capture 4 photo editing software nor the relatively new Capture NX can read files shot with your D90! Nikon's technical support say there's nothing they can do about that and I should buy ($180) or upgrade ($100) to the newest version, Capture NX 2. In my case, all I'm using my Capture software for is to de-fisheye pictures taken with Nikon's 10.5mm lens, which worked well with my previous Nikon cameras. No more.

I consider Nikon's attitude unacceptable and warn everyone that you may end up having to spend much more than you thought if you want to use your D90 as most people do!

I had been looking at SLR cameras for awhile and was deciding between the Canon Rebel line and the Nikon D90. I picked the D90 in the end. As far as build quality is concern, the D90 looks and feels much nicer than the Rebel line. Just less plastic and cheap-looking feel. With the 16-85mm lens, i'm very happy with the image quality and performance.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I had (and loved) the D70 for the past five years and it served me well. I figured it was time to step up to the newer and better advances that have come along since. The D90 has shown itself to be way beyond my expectations. The learning curve has been fairly easy and the picture quality is outstanding. I like the ability to be able to save my chosen custom settings, the DOF preview button and the in-camera editing features. The weight will probably keep this camera out of my back-pack on any extended hikes, but the great pictures it delivers offset any weight issues on day trips and short hikes. I did not buy this camera for (nor have I yet to use) the video feature, but it may yet come in handy. Over all, this is a great camera.

This is my first DSLR and I am so pleased. I bought it for a trip to Alaska and I took some amazing pictures. I had never actually been much of a photographer, but now I realize that I didn't enjoy it because I was using a pocket digital. With the D90 I was able to snap some incredible pictures of whale flukes and eagles in flight using the burst mode. Most everyone around me (except those also with Nikon DSLR's) were frustrated with their pics and amazed at mine. And the best part is that it's so easy to use. You can adjust an infinite amount of settings or you can just use the AUTO setting and take fabulous pictures. It's truly no more difficult to use than the little Canon Elph I had before.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I use this camera to take pictures of tourists on a canopy tour in Costa Rica. The camera makes a mockery of the previous model, the D80, in terms of overall image production. Active D-lighting does wonders compensating for the deep shadows generated by canopy foliage on sunny days. The autofocus is notably better than the D80. It is rarely fooled and focuses crisply on the intended subject. The D90 also works more cleanly with the VR technology present in the best Nikon lenses. One thing I don't like about the D90 is that the camera doesn't autofocus once you begin recording in D-movie mode. Its not so bad if your subject doesn't change its relative distance from the camera, but it is inconvenient when the subject starts out far away and comes closer. Also, though the video resolution is fantastic, 24 fps is too low for fast moving action scenes and tends to look a bit choppy.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

This is a great step up from the D40/60/5000. It has excellent low light performance, right up there with the D300 and the D3 for a fraction of the cost. The built in motor for autofocus opens the door to lenses that were only manual focus on the D40/60/5000 line. The build quality is superb and it is a bit more hefty than the lighter D40/60.

So far I am quite pleased with my D90. I just took it on a wonderful cruise down the Amalfi Coast. I am quite happy with my photos. The camera is fairly lightweight so it was easy to carry around. The controls are fairly easy although I have not made it through the whole manual yet. I tried taking a video and it worked great. Very easy and handy in a pinch. Fairly good quality. The colors and speed are two vast improvements from my D70. I also got some great shots of my daughter's ballet recital.

I use it most for travel/landscape, and a bit portrait. It's great with Nikon primes but a bit off balance with professional zooms as the body is light. Very good image quality and fast focus in bright light. But be prepared to focus yourself when it's dark. Exposure is also good if you get the right settings. If I am travelling overseas this is the only camera I am bringing because of the weight/quality balance.

The Nikon D90 is a fantastic camera. It's Nikon's newest and best DX format DSLR. After reading reviews of the D300 and D90, I chose the D90. My expectations were very high based on the reviews, but I must say that I was blown away by the actual results. Other than the weight, which is much less than most mid level DSLR's, it is the perfect camera. The quality of the exposure system astounds me, even in the most tricky situations that outcome has been above expectations. It excels in landscape and nature photography. Portraits are outstanding. The 18-200 mm lens presents opportunities to take outstanding shots that others could only dream about.

I got this camera as an upgrade from the D70 and love it! I also considered the D300, but wanted the option of automatic, and it was a little cheaper in price. I absolutely do NOT regret my decision as I LOVE this camera! I just took it on a trip to Yellowstone and got some amazing shots of landscape and animals. Even in motion, the images of animals are fantastic. I am so glad I got this camera before my trip and am really impressed with the images it was able to capture in daytime, and even during lowlight at dawn and dusk. I definitely recommend this camera to anyone. It is a great upgrade from the D70 with the larger screen and updated functions. Fantastic!

The D90 is great for the current time. The photo community needs a little bit more time to improve the video feature to allow you to focus, move, zoom and adjust exposure while shooting video. As of now, it locks those features but with a little bit more development, I believe they'll fix that. The only other thing I would have liked is the same low light features as the D700 or D3X

I use my camera for dog sports and wildlife. I love this camera and have owned 2 other Nikon digital cameras and this by far is the best one I have owned. I also looked at the D3 (too heavy) and the D700 and felt the D90 was the best buy for the money for several reasons: good size, not too heavy, good price point, live screen, great color, great lens selection and the optional battery grip and a good low light camera. I would like a bit quicker shutter speed. The battery life is great. The manual focus allows for you to get some of those fast shots without the blur you might get on auto focus. Very pleased with this camera. Right choice for me.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

The D90 has many of the features of the D300 without the price. Yes, there are fewer AF points but try a D90 and see if you can even tell the difference. It's lighter weight (yeah, it's not metal but it sure feels sturdy enough although you can't use it as a hammer). The D90 is easy to use but you can turn off the idiot mode and really get creative if you want. The video mode doesn't replace a real video camera but the quality is very good and it's definitely a cool feature. I went with the 18-200 which is way cool. I wish it was offered as a kit lens for the D90 but it's not. It's not a super fast (f3.5-5.6) but it covers a lot of zoom and focuses PDQ. Unless you do a lot of low light shooting, the lens will probably never leave your camera. Overall, if you are looking at a D300, consider this. If you need the real pro features of the 300, spend the money - it's a super camera but the pictures are going to be the same and your neck will thank you for dropping the weight.

We purchased the D90 to replace our aging D50. It had everything we needed, and was much less expensive than the D300. I never cease to be amazed at the cameras capabilities.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I upgraded to the D90 from D60 mainly for the better sensor and it's ability to handle low light situations with lower iso settings - and also to gain the autofocus functionality with some non AF-S lenses. I've been able to take faster with less noise, shots in the same light with the 16-85mm VR and 50mm 1.8D lenses I already owned and could not be any happier. I am also pleased with the bigger size, and the fact that I can change settings much faster than I was able to on the D60. And although I don't use the video/liveview portions of the camera, it is nice knowing I have the option to later in the future.

I love this camera! It is my first DSLR, and my wife and I have been wanting to get a better camera for a while. It works really well in low-light situations and the high speed mode works well for catching action shots. Great buy!

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

The D90 is my 5th DSLR. My only regret with the D90 is that I should have purchase one the month it became public instead of waiting 12 months for the price to go down. During that period I ended up losing valuable photo opportunities which ended up costing me more. I'm considering getting another D90 for my 12 year old son, since he was able to master its system in a couple of day. Simply, a fantastic little camera.

I received this camera, in combination, with the Nikon 18-200 lens, just before leaving on a trip to Costa Rica. The results were spectacular.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

This camera is a wonderful piece of technology.

The body is a great step up from the D40. Pictures are crisp and the 12.4MP bring a great level of detail to pictures. I shoot in primarily RAW and the RAW photos are great, although quite large in size (I get under 300 RAW photographs on my 4GB card). On the other hand the battery is much longer than I was told to believe.

The camera itself is a perfect balance of size and weight. It is very similar to the Nikon D80, although it feels somewhat more comfortable to use, especially with the buttons. Other cosmetic improvements over other cameras include the amazing high quality, bright screen on the back, the backlit display on the top and the well designed up/down/right/left button on the back (also goes diagonally).

The only complaint I have is that I wish performance at ISO800+ was better. Don't get me wrong, the performance is plenty good, but in dark light, ISO1600 can really present itself. The autocorrecting features for JPEG are nice, though.

A wonderful camera overall - high FPS rate, good ISO capabilities, comfortable to hold and use...I would highly recommend it.

Traded up from a D80 & am happy I did. Much better shutter response. Better results in high ISO situations. Awesome LCD screen. It's sharp & big which helps when reviewing images. CMOS sensor with self cleaning is great. Next best DX camera than the D300 for less money. Granted it can't take the abuse of a D300, but image quality is awesome. A big step up from the D80. Worth the money

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I am so very pleased with this camera and its ability to make me look like a "pro". It requires a very good lens to get the full benefit out of the camera. A cheap lens will be the limitation and must be understood by anyone who purchases this camera. That is not a downfall of the camera, just the opposite, it is such a good camera that it requires a quality lens.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

Been drooling over the latest generation of Nikon DSLR's for the last year and finally took the plunge to this excellent D90. Exceeded my expectations, especially when compared to the D100 it replaced. Ergonomically better than the D300 (tried my friends) and lighter to boot!

For Nikon users, especially those from the D2/D200 series cameras, an easy transition. From the D100, I had to think about how to change ISO on the fly (a minor nitpick and more a user issue), but after a day, like the newer system for the speed and use. Active D-Lighting is amazing.... will make me lazy in composing my pictures now.

Highly Recommended!

THAN THE LESSER MODELS. I TRULY LIKE MY D80 BUT I'M MOST PLEASED WITH THE D90. A JOY TO USE.

I have been taking pictures with Nikon's DSLRs for the past five years. My previous one was the D200, which I still love. The D90 had all the features of the D200 without a heavy body. I haven't used the liveview feature or the video mode too much but they seem to be a great addition. My favorite upgrades are the larger megapixels and the in camera editing feature! This is a great camera to start with if you are really looking to get into photography or a good upgrade if you have an older one!

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

The D90 is a great all-around camera for the serious amature/semi-pro photographer. You can go from fully automatic (camera making the decisions for you) to manual focus and aperature/shutter control easily. The color reporduction is fantastic, and it looks like the programming of the automatic functions does a good job of balancing light, color, and camera/lens settings.

I bought the Nikkor DX VR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED zoom lens with the camera for the versatility. The camera takes wonderful images in the macro through full zoom range with none of the graininess I have experienced with other lenses. The vibration reduction in the lens helps for those long shots.

The LCD display is large and sharp, giving a good representation of the true image. Of course, you need to view the image on a large monitor for an accurate view of the image.

The battery life is pretty good (I ran through one full charge over a two-day conference, over 600 images taken [15% with the built-in flash], viewed, images deleted, etc.). With a backup battery, life is good!

I had a Nikon D100 and I bought the Nikon D90 and it is a hugh step up in photo quality. I find the D90 to do extremely well in low light. This is by far the best low light camera even at higher ISO I have ever used. If I had to say the only weakness is a slightly slower auto focus but, unless you are shooting fast moving subjects all the time this camera will work great. This camera also will shoot 5 mins. worth of HD video but, I have not used this function and most likely never will as I am a photographer not a video person but, it is another option for people.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

With this D 90, 18-200mm F3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR LENS, I purchased from ABE's of maine in February, it has been a major improvement of shuttle speed over my old Nikon, Cannon, Kodak and Samsung Pro 815 I have. . With my old camera, in many occasions my model or subject just walk away, thinking I finished taking his/her photo. Great service, ABE's Maine shipped the camera with my choice of lense the same day, I've ordered.

I love all the flexibility setting the camera allow me to do. The buttons are at the right location, very well placement. info buttons allow a person with poor eye sight like me to see most of the setting on the big LCD screen. How ever I am still trying to figure it out the advantage of live
view !!! With my old Samsung; all importance setting can be view thru the view finder including preview the photo before you take and preview what was taken. In turn, I can make an adjustment setting for the next shoot with out taking my eye off the view finder. One suggestion to Nikon, to have picture review on the view finder and the information on the view finder should be brighter for person with poor eyesight. As it is, the display in side the view finder is useless for me.

However the pro is still out weight the cons, it will take more time for me to learn and get use to the new feature of the D90.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

Fast shutter; easy to use; sharp images; a great camera all around. I got this as a back-up camera for my D200. I find myself using this more than the D200. Very happy that they use the same type of battery. Not sure why Nikon chose to use a different memory card but that's been a minor problem.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

The D90 is easier and more straight forward to use than my older D70. The D70, however, is compatible with more of my older Nikon lens. At first I thought the movie functions wasn't working because the picture count changed very little. Than I realized 20 sec at movie resolution is only two 12 megbyte pictures. I see a happy future a head with this camera.

Just have to say that I am very happy with this camera. I started DSLRs with a Canon Rebel about four years ago. I updated to a 40D, but was never really happy with the camera controls. It takes great pictures, though.

Bought a used D40 to try out Nikon, loved the controls and ease of use. Now updating to the D90, I'm going to switch to the Nikon line. The camera just works for me, with very little fussing with menus. The controls are just there and they make perfect sense to me.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I was disappointed to learn that the Nikon D90 is not backwards compatible with the SB-28 flash. The flash does not have any TTL capabilities when connected. It looks like I'll have to upgrade my flash, but the lenses work great. DX format isn't a bit deal. The video is limited to 5 minutes at a time, but I'm not bothered by that so much as the flash. And the auto focus is not as precise as I'd hoped, but it is a phenomenal camera.

This is my first SLR camera digital or film. I follow technology closely and recently started reading a few photographer blogs. One of the gentlemen uses a D3 for professional sports photography and I am amazed with the results. Doing a little research I realized that the new D90 inherited many of the qualities that make the D3 such a winner. ISO performance at 3200 is amazing. I never thought I would be able to get wonderful photos in low light without a flash. I also got the Nikon 18-200 mm lens when I bought the body and have been very pleased with it.

I work for my campus newspaper and use this camera for that as well as personal use. I wanted a new camera and debated between the the D90 and the D300, with the only major difference being whether or not I will be using studio lighting. I went with the D90 and love it! It is not too heavy by any means and is very easy to use. I use my camera for a lot of photojournalism photos, but also a lot of nature and sports photography. The video feature is also very nice and the sound quality is great.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

This is my first digital slr after using Nikon slr film cameras for over 30 years. After extensive research and playing with my friend's Nikon D60, I made the plunge. Ease of operation and button placements are superb. The owner's manual is very detailed and formatted very well. A feature I found that is very useful is the shooting parameters that are typically displyed only on the top of the camera by the shutter release button on a small lcd screen can also be displayed simultaneously on the 3" playback screen on the back (no more squinting to see those little numbers). The power of this camera is more than I expected. My major out-of-the-ordinary requirement is taking photos of Siberian Huskys - both portrait and fast action - and I have not been disappointed. I coupled the body with a Nikon 18-200 VR lens that I keep on at all times. 12.3 Meg gives the ability to crop and maintain excellent resolution which produces very good photos equivalent to using a 600 or 800mm lens.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I've been an avid photographer all of my life, and this is the best camera I've ever owned (my old Graflex film camera was not bad either). In the digital age, I was a Canon man but I was unhappy with the APS-C sensor cameras (50D and below) I tried. The D90 takes great (like wow great) images and is so much easier to "steer" than the Canons, even for a guy with old eyes like mine. I've not read much of the D90 manual yet, but I'm already impressed by what the D90 can do. As an example, I was at the Westminster Dog Show last night and got some shots that make me smile using only the lighting in Madison Square Garden (no flash). Here is a link with a few shots from the show. I'm clearly not a pro, nor is the D90 professional gear. But it sure is fun to shoot with the D90 and the 18-200 lens.[@]

Great photo quality, as I can always expect from Nikon. I bought it, however, for the HD movie feature. Had I read the reviews I may have know before buying it that it doesn't continue to focus during the movie mode. Worse yet, in highest resolution you can only film for 5 minutes, or both lower quality for a maximum 20 minutes. It doesn't suit the need I bought it for, but it is fun, nevertheless.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

This camera meets all of my needs!

First of all, I own a little publishing company, and the D90 is great for product photography, employee/staff photos, etc.

Secondly, I'm a full-time art student. The D90 produces pictures that exceed my expectations or needs.

And lastly, photography is a hobby of mine (it probably helps that I'm an art student). The D90 is great for cute pictures of my nieces, EXTREMELY low light pictures of my weekly worship service, landscapes, and nature.

Casual pictures of people turn out great. (Seemingly) accurate skin tones, high detail (more than most women would want), and great enough ISO performance to capture any event in any light.

The D90 has more features than 99% of its business would require or know how to use. This is a professional camera (without the full-frame image quality).

I have a D50 and what it can produce at ISO 200, the D90 can produce at ISO 1000.

The huge marketing point--the video--works pretty well, in a sense that it's fun to have. I don't see how it'd ever be all that functional, as the strictly manual focus is limiting. But overall, it produces terrific 720p video in a creative way. This a dSLR people... NOT a HD camcorder.

The Live View is useless for me. I suppose, for some users, it's a nice addition to have, but its focusing is painfully slow and inaccurate. The face detection is neat though.

OVERALL... Wonderful camera at a wonderful price. Superb image quality--as good as cameras twice its price (ahem, D300). If you're not happy with what it produces, get a better lens. That's possibly the most important element that most people seem to forget about (as they throw on a mediocre, plastic body, kit lens).

If you've never had a dSLR, get the D40x kit (but be aware that you can only use newer lenses for autofocus, and forgo the D60, as it's the D40x with some extra marketing, essentially).

If you know how to take advantage of a dSLR, are looking to upgrade from an older one, and don't need full-frame FX image quality (hardly any average consumers do), then the D90 is your best bet!!

(I'd recommend forgoing the kit lens to save some cash. There are better lenses to be had for the cost of the upgrade to the kit)

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I bought this camera after renting a D300, and have been using it with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens (recommended!) primarily for editorial and macro work. The decreased size and weight of the D90 make it much easier to use for long, handheld shoots. The shutter lag and focus speed are fast enough for all subjects, except intense sports action. Image quality is about the same as the D300, with slightly better noise control. Re: IQ, three things bother me. Some of my shots taken with a speedlight under tungsten lights have had odd colors that are difficult to correct, even working in RAW. The light metering is so closely tied to the focus point in Single Point Focus Mode that sometimes I have been forced to move the focus from the ideal spot in order to get a good exposure. Finally, even with Active D Lighting turned up, highlights in high contrast situations often blow out. Live View resolution is only one or two megapixels and pressing the magnification button only zooms in up to 7x, making focus confirmation when doing macro work difficult. Despite these reservations, I'm glad that I went with the D90 instead of the D300.

As an owner of a Nikon D100, I had been reading reviews of the D90 and finally decided to try one. It's definitely a Nikon- which means a quality camera with familar controls and newer features to learn. It's quiet and the 12 mg images are beautiful. The ability to shoot NEF+JPEG is useful and paired with a VR Nikon zoom creates sharp images. I'm still playing with the camera and haven't yet utilized all of the features but I love this camera! It's difficult to go back to the D100 after experiencing the D90 -- the D90 has now become my main camera. The quality, features, and the reasonable price make this a top of the line digital camera that you can't afford not to own.

I bought the D90 to upgrade from my D50, I usually just do some portraits and sometimes weddings. Abe's made me nervous because I found lots of aweful reviews about them; but for some reason I went with it anyways, and they did everything correctly, I had no problems whatsoever. The only real complaint I have at this point about the product itself is that they moved the delete button to an awkward place for me. Other than that, I am happy with it!

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I purchased this camera as a replacement to a very reliable N70 nikon film camera. It is my first foray into digital and I am very pleasantly impressed. This is a well built solid camera that has all the positive features I was looking for. I use the camera mainly for capturing my kids sports games and the fast and responsive shutter was a key decision in going for this model over more affordable but slower models.
The video mode is also a big plus to capture the exact desired moment. Video quality is great, I don't need to carry my camcorder anymore.

I also love the ability to control everything manually if I want to as well as the large and sparkling LCD. I also was able to use the nikkor lenses I already have, so I did not need to purchase new ones. I am very tempted by the new stabilized super Zoom lenses built specifically for the digital format of the D90 though.

The software that came with the camera is also very good and easy to set-up.

This camera is well worth the price. I am looking forward to a long lasting investment.

Best price on the internet for the D90 body. Abes takes care of you on personal level, especially with it being a large purchase. Low light shooting with a fast lens can't be beat, even handheld. Low low noise. The color representation from raw is top notch. Solid in your hand, settings are all very accessible so you don't lose the moment while switching things up.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

I have owned this camera for about 3 weeks and have taken roughly 150 pictures using a Nikon 16-85 lens. Being used to film cameras, I was concerned that I would not be happy with the quality. Surprisingly, the prints from the D90 are very sharp and even superior to the prints I was getting from a Canon Elan 7e using 200 speed fuji film and a Canon 28-200 lens.

Being new to digital photography, I was concerned about mastering all of the features. However, within a couple of days, I was altering white balance, exposure controls, sharpness and color staturation on the fly and had developed several shooting modes.

The camera works well in low light. I am shooting my kids basketball games at 6400 iso, and the quality is acceptable. I have also been shooting video of their games. I had read that the video was poor quality, so my expecations were low. I have been pleasantly surprised by the video quality.

My only complaint is that it focuses a little too slow for sports photography, but that may be more a function of the lens than the camera. Overall, I am really happy with this camera.

Great digital SLR. Falls short on the video. In a hockey rink the video is poor and with reduced light the video is very poor. Difficult to hold for video with lots of motion. None of the video features of even a modest video camera. We bought this camera based on 2 articles in TIME that srtongly supported this camera as a nice combination of dig SLR and video. I would say this is a great dig SLR with very modest video capacity.

haven't used movie mode yet but still photography results have been fantastic - camera is easy to use and ergonomically pretty close to perfect. 18-200 lens is very versatile. Focus speed outstanding unless in live mode, when it is very very slow. The lens hood is a little frustrating as it is hard to place lens cover without scratching the lens. I think I will ultimately not use it much. Fit and finish are great and I feel superior to comparable Canon models. As a long time Canon enthusiast, that is disappointing for me to say. I am looking forward to putting the d90 through through more of its paces in the upcoming months...

I was hesitant at first to upgrade from the D40x but am happy that i did. Feels great in your hand. Has a large bright LCD screen. Works well at high ISO's considering the price of the camera.

Although the movie mode has some limitations it will give you a great depth of field compared to many consumer camcorders in the same price range. I can see using it for short segments of independent film projects when you really need a dramatic shot.

I have traded up in the past six months from a D40X, which I really liked, to a D60, which I also liked, to the D90, which I love. I initially bought the D40 just because I was ready for a digital SLR that was reasonably priced. While I think it takes great photos, I wanted to go to the next level in quality of the photos. There is so much to learn about this camera, that I feel inadequate to comment on it, but I am learning every time I use it. I have not yet used the video, as that was not the selling point for me with the camera. The LCD and Live View are great, especially in a sporting event when I am trying to take a photo with the camera above my head, so I can't see through the viewfinder.I would recommend this camera to anyone who can afford it. I use D90 for casual photography with Sigma 50mm f1.4 lens. Mostly street scenery, buildings and open spaces.
I know I shouldn't care for a video, but I like the 'movie quality' of it. I hate the way camcorder video turn out.
LiveView is an awesome addition.
Few gripes are basically somewhat minor:
With heavy lens the grip is somewhat uncomfortable to hold due to its shortness.
Controls are somewhat complicated and confusing.

I love this camera! I purchased a 50mm F/1.4D Nikon lens from Abe's Of Maine also and I cannot bring myself to switch lenses after seeing the quality of pictures with this lens. I have the Tamron 18-270mm lens and have not touched it since I tried the 50mm 1.4 lens. I wish I never bought the 18-270 lens. Night shots are amazing. My photos at friends' rock concerts look like magazine quality shots with no flash. ONLY problem is a maximum of 5 minute videos??? Which I researched and found out was some stupid European trade policy, which for some reason has to affect the US. Oh well despite 5 min max videos this camera is the best thing since sliced bread. I also take a lot of car pictures and it makes my cars look like a magazine photoshoot.

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

This camera has replaced both my D200 and Fuji S5 to become my defacto main camera. It's not as robust, but still very well built. The high ISO shots are very good with very usable shots in the 1600-3200 ISO range and even 6400 ISO in a pinch. The video is a fun extra but the "jello effect" takes some getting used to. As long as you see video as a feature to explore within it's inherent limitations you will love the artistic possibilities afforded by using those love nikon primes!

Nikon has a winner in the D90. Along with a very intuitive control, the Nikon D90 is easy to use for casual shooting or can be adjusted in hundreds of ways for more sophisticated applications. I have not had occasion to use the video capability of the camera except for testing, but have found that to be easy with great video quality. The camera itself is built like a tank, which makes it a little heavy. Overall, a small sacrifice for a superior photo product.

I've had the camera for two weeks. This is my first digital SLR; I thought I'd shoot high. So far the camera is great. I am using nikon's 24mm 2.8 lens - on the DX sensor it's like a traditional "semi-wide" lens. I am still getting used to the number of controls that I have over the image-making. Before this I was mainly shooting 4x5 negatives and scanning them into the computer. Of course, the matrix of this camera can't compare to the 4x5's, but the ease-of-use is peeking my enthusiasm. Great camera.

Better than the D80, not worth a D200

Cons:
Expensive, Slow Live View
Best Uses:
Fun, Landscape, Travel
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

For the same price I should have gotten a D200 for $75 more, or taken the money and saved up for a fast pro lens.

The Live View is super slow to focus, so you won't be using that. The video doesn't have auto focus and the exposure jerks noticeably by 1/3 stops as the scene changes. I love the new LCD screen, (which rules) because you can check for correct focus, not just exposure, including outdoors. The new "info" button is real nice, especially at night! And the "OK" button is finally in the right place!

The firmware has really improved over the D80, and the "My Menu" was badly needed. But they should have thrown in a "shooting menu bank" like the D200. How much java programming would that have required?

The 12 mega pixels is nice for cropping without losing too much quality. But get ready to buy a new hard drive, and you can't just back up your shoot on 1 DVD anymore, unless you use a double sided DVD.

I love my D90, but I wish it only cost me about $750. I would have preferred a faster flash sync speed without having to use the FP trick, like my D70s. And I don't know why it's not optimized for ISO 100, instead of ISO Lo1, (whatever that means.) I want my ISO 100 setting back:-)

If I sound like I'm complaining, it's not because I don't like the camera, I just don't like the price. And I know Nikon will expect me to shell out more money every time they come out with a "new and improved" camera.

While I like the extra quality in high ISO, I would have much rather saved the money, sell my cheap prosumer lenses and buy a fast pro lens, such as the 70-200mm f/2.0 VR. The fact is, I hate shooting in anything higher than ISO 800 because the grain plain sucks! (Even though it's "better" than the D80.)

The battery life is not as good as the D80, especially if you use Live View, which drains it quickly while it has to continuously hold the shutter in the up position.

At the rate in which the D200 is falling in price, I would highly recommend paying a few extra bucks and getting a pro grade body, especially before they discontinue selling the classic D200!

After using several top of the line Nikon cameras 20 years ago, I thought I would graduate into a DSLR after years of using digital point-and-shoot cameras. The D90 was a great choice! Although there are a ton of buttons and controls that can be used to manipulate the pictures you take, both before and after taking the pictures; the joy of this camera is that it can be used on one of its automatic settings for excellent quality photos. o, while Ilearn how to use the features that Nikon has loaded into this camera, I can take lots of pictures that have what I call "professional quality." I have photographed my two-year old grandson racing around, high school football, and exotic animals at the local zoo with amazing results. Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:
Casual Photographer
Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon D90 DX Format Digital SLR Camera Body:

First, my previous digital camera was the DSC-H2. My primary concerns were slow flash charge time, bad battery life and slow auto-focus. I didn't want to buy "another" of these point and shoot cameras that are always "a little better" so I shot to the top. Yep, the Canon line is a well respected line, but Nikon caught my eye and DP Review did a peak at it and this was a top camera in their eyes.

So, Abe's is always a great price and I figured, let's try to buy the first and "last" D-SLR that I should need for a long while. I made the investment and I have been rewarded. The 18-135 Lens is amazing, even without the VR. The camera is fast, really fast. The focus doesn't hunt around and you don't get lots of motor noises. Using the flash or not, you can click away so fast that the subject gets tired of that much attention. I didn't know that a flash could be so accurate either. Just the right light at all times. My cull rate (amount of throw away pictures) just went down dramatically.

The next thing I've noticed is the features. It can do everything that the pros talk about and you can put on every possible lens you can afford. I am actually thinking about looking into doing more in photography as I realize the camera can do it all. The programing and configuration steps are easy and become reasonably intuitive once you get the hang of it. Easy to read, well placed, displays make it a snaps to figure out what automatic choices the camera has made. When you wish to over ride, Nikon has added tools to make that as easy as you wish. You can even invest in pre-selecting some preferred settings.

Did I mention the battery life??? Wow, 600 pictures, mixture of flash on and off one session (marching band) and I still had over half of the battery life left. The charging process is amazingly fast. I bought an extra battery just to be safe, but I'm not sure that it is anything more than an insurance policy.

By the way, I took some HD (720i) movies with the camera and it bets out my 3CCD panasonic hard drive video camera. The sound isn't as good, but it was more than acceptable. This is another pot sweetener that helped my choose Nikon over Canon. Add in the optional GPS unit and it is a took geek's delight.

So, yes, an amateur can be very happy with this camera and still feel good value for the money even if they don't know everything about photography!
