Just received camera kit from Abe's. [...] Haven't had much time to practice with the camera yet, but almost all of the reviews I read online and from reputable sources are very positive on the e-Volt 510. It is very light but built well. Fits very well in the hand and is comfortable to shoot with. Not an intimidating DSLR in terms of being able to use w/out a photo course.

Comments about Olympus EVOLT E-510 Digital Camera w/ 14-42mm & 40-150mm Lens Kit:
I researched entry-level dslr's thoroughly before buying the EVOLT 510 two lens kit. It was by far the best value, and I have been pleased with my purchase. It also got almost universally very good reviews. I have spent several hours learning the camera, getting to know the range of settings it offers, and shooting with it. My sense thus far is that it is indeed a good camera to help novice photographers evolve into more advanced digital photography. Used as a point and shoot, you get good results under most conditions, but once you learn to work with the camera, you can widen the range of its use, and get terrific photographs. Its strengths: great picture quality, espcially for those willing to learn the camera; easy to use on auto for beginners who don't want to dive into the menu system and learn the camera; exciting options and lots to learn for those who DO want to learn the menus and options; image stabilization works well; dust cleaning is a nice feature; kit lenses are good. The 510 seems to struggle in low light, but with some patience, I have found ways to work with it under these conditions (exposure comp, ISO, shutter speed, aperture). In backlit situations outdoors, shots that do not use manual override are so underexposed that they come out black. Thus, the meter is not fool proof, and you have to *think* and plan before you shoot if you want good results under challenging situations. Do not be discouraged by this. The whole idea behind an slr is more access to control of the camera. This is the reason I wanted an slr: I wanted to be able to USE my camera, rather than having to accept what it produced. [...] has been a very helpful resource in learning to use the camera. The other camera I considered buying was the Nikon D40, which I think may fair better in low light, but which does not offer the same image quality overall, nor anywhere near range of options that the E510 has. As with many things buy an E-520, newer and better. If you can afford it buy the new E-30. I like this camera for its features.
The E-510 is my 2nd digital camera and it does a good job. Read the manual and/or buy a DVD. This camera has some nice features and you'll want to use them too. The lenses that came with the kit do good job.
Buy at least a 4Gb memory card and an extra battery.
Comments about Olympus EVOLT E-510 Digital Camera w/ 14-42mm & 40-150mm Lens Kit:
I am a technophobe and have a hard time following manuals, so I don't have a full grasp of what this camera can REALLY do. But what I've managed, I've been impressed with! Every digital has its nuances, but the quick start crib sheet made the magic happen almost instantly. The editing software is relatively easy to use right from the first click!

I bought this camera specifically for capturing action shots of deep sea fishing. I just completed a trip to Cabo San Lucas and took 1200+ action photos. One of these is the best photo I have taken in my life. This camera far exceeds what I expected in both value and quality. You cannot go wrong with this camera and the combo lens package.

Olympus sold me back six years ago with the C5050. It was and still is the best camera for picture quality that I've ever used! Now the Evolt E-510 gives me the focal range with the lenses and SLR capability. I've only had it for a month, so I'm still learning. But based on all the great Olympus on-line tutorials and photo school sessions offered and coupled with the use of the manual, I'm sure that it will continue to perform as expected.

Comments about Olympus EVOLT E-510 Digital Camera w/ 14-42mm & 40-150mm Lens Kit:
Shots are a little soft, especially at 150 (40-150 kit lens). Requires tweaking in super control panel to get really sharp shots. In body stabilization incredibly useful! Reduces additional lens cost considerably while keeping stabilization feature intact. Flash is too small, but sufficient in a pinch. Great SLR kit, especially considering the cost.
Comments about Olympus EVOLT E-510 Digital Camera w/ 14-42mm & 40-150mm Lens Kit:
My photos have improved dramatically since purchasing this camera. It makes digitally photography easy and fun.
I did replace the kit lenses with pro level glass. I needed it for some of the work I am doing. For the most part I got great results from the kit lenses and they can't be beat compared to other kit lenses.
The body is excellent. It is easy to use, light weight compared to others, and has features that you would expect to pay more for.
I would recommend this to a friend. In fact I bought one for my father who stopped using his other camera after using this one.

I am mojoring in photography in college and i got this camera as a graduation gift. I read review after review trying to decide between olympus, cannon, and nikon. I eventually went with the olympus because i think you get more for your money. I am so happy i did because i absolutely love this camera. the only drawbacks are that it is a little confusing in the begining but you get used to it, and without and additional flash it is not very good in dark places. I would strongly recommend this camera to everyone.

Does the job, and the two lens kit is the way to go. They are both pretty slow, but for the money it's hard to beat the price. WB and exposure is generally on, but sometimes overexposes. The live view is nice if you're using a tripod and have some time to take several shots. Build quality is good, and feels more sturdy than the Canons to me.
Comments about Olympus EVOLT E-510 Digital Camera w/ 14-42mm & 40-150mm Lens Kit:
We bought this model for a trip to Greece in June. It was the lowest cost camera with decent res and image stabilization. A friend bought a Nikon without IS and said it didn't take good pic's in museums w/o flash. The Olympus worked fine. Be sure to shoot thru glass a little off straight on as it focuses on the glass not the subject.
We used it a lot and it took great pic's. The controls are complicated coming from film cameras or a point and shoot but we learned over time.
It still is the cheapest dual lens kit with IS so I'd still buy it again although, I'd look at the Sony. The Cannon and Nikon models are 30-50% more with no value add except the name.
The 3-4 format works and keeps the lens sizes small so it packs well. Seemed rugged enough. Dropped on concrete a couple of time and still works. Probably just luck.
I'd buy it again.
