Took this camera to Maine and Vermont. Some of the pictures were so good that people thought they were fake. I have very little photography experience. For a portable point and shoot you can't get much better. Don't expect the HD movies to be of the highest quality, but definitely above average.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

I took this camera from the box on a 7 day trip to San Francisco. The camera performed well in a variety of conditions. The zoom is all you expect, and can really capture some nice shots of things you can barely even see. It worked well indoors (museum light) and outdoors (zoo and the bay). A guy at Fisherman's wharf showed me a small undocumented feature: Turn it down to 3MP and the optical zoom is 17x...

Lag can be long, but if you frame a shot and tap the button to get the range, you can take a quick photo, even of action shots, such as the bear fight caught at 10x zoom.

But the longer battery - it's worth it.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

The reports about this camera's pictures being "noisy" at ISO 400 or higher are true.

BUT... what the other reviews don't tell you is that you need to be at 50% magnification or more before you can begin to see it. If you limit yourself to 8x10 prints or smaller, you won't see imperfections (except under extreme conditions).

On top of all that, the 10x optical zoom let's you take photos that you would not be able to otherwise.

All things considered, it is a great camera. It got 4/5 stars only for the lack of manual controls and the noise at ISO 400 or greater (see note about magnification). This really is a great camera - my comments sound harsher than I mean for them to. I have been completely pleased with it.

[...] Great overall. Good controls, and not confusing. Love the wide angle to telephoto feature! A lot of manual control, and automatic seems to be overall spot on. Miss the optical viewfinder--even though the 3" lcd screen is pretty bright. I know they're electronic on the new cameras, but it also used to be the way to steady the camera.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

Several photography websites had reviewed this model and commented about the noise even at low ISO settings. Their sample photos didn't look that bad so I bought one. Man, my first series of shots were hugely disappointing. Even daylight shots had tons of noise. I took some comparison shots with my old Canon A610 and it pretty much blew away the TZ5. Fiddling with the settings did nothing to reduce the noise. I promptly returned the camera to Abes and was given a full refund. My thanks to Abes for a hassle-free return and I will definitely buy from them again.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

This camera is sufficient for most people. Great family camera. Fits in the diaper bag. A lot of review sites are convincing people they need an SLR when they don't. 4x6 and 5x7 pics from this camera are spectacular. 8x10s are fine for non-professional use. The camera is simple and the metering is spot on. The build is really solid too. In low light the flash makes for fine photos at home. If you need to take pics low light with no flash, or if you want to publish wildlife photos, then buy the SLR, but be prepared to spend more on lenses than the camera for good results.

I wanted something that had stabilization. My previous camera I would get blurry shots when trying to get a quick picture. This has 2 modes, and I find it hard to get a blurry picture even when I try. The only negative is... low light... it is hard to see the subject if it is very far away. But this may be true with all cameras...

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

What a great little camera! The Leica lens is tack sharp. It works amazingly well for macro shots. Low light performance is better than expected. There's a slight tendency for photos to have a color temperature tending towards the cool side, but this is very easily corrected in post-processing. There is a slight shutter lag typical of point and shoot cameras, but its better than most I have tried.
The LCD is bright, although in full sun on the beach it is a little tough to see. In less extreme circumstances, it is just fine.
This is a terrific camera to bring along when the digital SLR and its lenses are more than the situation allows.
Recommended!

I went from a Canon PowerShot A570 to the Panasonic Lumix 10x and the learning curve was easy. I've enjoyed using the different "scene" modes especially the aerial mode. Anyone who has an interest in expanding their photographic interest should definitely consider this camera. I'm learning the downloading aspect to a PC which offers very little assistance. This is where the real learning curve will take place.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

We try to travel a lot and I was just tired of 3:1 zoom cameras. Of course, 10:1 indoors (at a cathedral, for instance) is a little dark - but you can always play with the photo in your computer. But outdoors, the 10:1 over-rides any objections.

The 2.8 at near is great in a small room with a lot of friends.

A little trick I learned is that when you are in a darkish area and taking a picture within about 10-15 feet, setting the camera for "Pets" makes the photo sharp and lighter (when you take the photo normally it comes out darker than in the viewfinder).

The camera is bulkier than an Elph but is absolutely worth it to me.

I use an 8 gig card which is easily good for the 1500+ pictures I would take on a trip (at the highest resolution) and I carry an 8 gig spare in case I go completely nuts!

A great little camera with anti-shake and all the other bells and whistles.

I love to be able to snap a pic of many things. The DMZ-TZ5K has been a great choice because of its ease of use. It also has many programs if you want to get more serious. I love it. Some reviews call it a bit heavy, but you have to allow for all the optical zoom you get in this small package.

This camera offers tremendous features for a handsized camera. The 10 optical zoom, the 10 MB images, the automatic everything features. It is simple and fun to use, but also powerful enough to produce professional results. In fact, if you are a professional, this is a great companion camera when you don't want to be so precise and accurate with your photography. The biggest drawback so far is just getting use to all of the features that are packed into this camera.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

I decided to pick up the TZ5 to complement an older but powerful Fuji F30 that I already had. I don't have time to get into the SLR arena, and wanted something small, with a zoom, and great picture quality. There is nothing as good as the TZ5 on the market at the moment.

Panasonic continues to build on a winning formula, and the shortcomings can all be mitigated through software. The noisiness of the images is due to its engine, but it is much better than it has ever been.

I intend to use the wide-angle for outdoor use and the zoom to get to subjects that are out of reach. The lens is first-rate and is powerful.

I would purchase this camera again and I would definitely get it from Abes.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

I bought this camera because I saw that it has Leica lens on it. After using this camera, I finally realized that it doesn't mean anything, except the printed-label, Leica. It seems to work just as a normal "snap-shot" camera in the same price range.
Although Panasonic proudly introduced "IA" and SCN (pre-programmed) modes, those are not so impressive. The picture quality is hard to comparable with any DSR camera. Noise problems over ISO 400 are difficult to ignore. 10X optical zoom is often useless under low light situations and even windy locations. Overall, this is a camera for travel if I don't want to be bothered by the weight of my DSR camera and lens. Be aware that you will frequently miss your DSR camera, back at home or in a car. This is not a possible replacement for a DSR, sadly. Certainly better than any phone cameras though.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

The 10x zoom is awesome. The camera is pretty fast, even at 8+ mega pixel resolution. The controls could have been more user friendly, but they are not bad the way they are. The camera is a bulky (probably due to the 10x zoom), so it's rather inconvenient to carry in trouser pocket. The screen is big and bright, but the camera is not smart to turn the image automatically when you flip the camera (like in cannon cameras or iPhones). Other than that, it's a great camera for the price.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

The zoom is outstanding, flash works great even at 10ft or more. Low light is not always the best but the flash makes up for it most of the time. I researched and played around with a lot of cameras before I found this one. The ability to record in HD is amazing as well even though the mic does not pick up as much. But its a digital camera right not a video camera.

I am not by any means an expert in photography, but the pictures I have taken thus far with this camera have come out great. The only drawbacks I have noticed are that sometimes the pictures are not optimal in low light and the lens cap is plastic and flimsy. Still, the vast majority of pictures I have taken have been fantastic. In addition, the video I have taken with this camera has been great as well...it is not a camcorder, but some of the footage in the HD mode is pretty spectacular.

Great camera. Love the zoom and stability. At 9MB, ezoom is ok to get decent resolution for 14X zoom. Easy features. Seems to take a while to shoot with autofocus and all, but there may be a better setting to use - have missed shots due to this. Heavy lense, but heh, it has huge zoom. Would have liked more rubbery grip on front instead of hard plastic.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

This is one of the best cameras I've owned. The Zoom is incredible for a camera this size. Pictures usually look great, but start to look much worse when zooming in, or printing large prints. The in-camera noise reduction blurs away a bit of detail. Still, I get fewer blurry pictures without flash than previous cameras, although sometimes I get blurry pictures WITH flash. Go figure. I'd love to be able to disable the red eye reduction, as it delays pictures a second or more. There doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off in auto mode. Also, the autofocus often takes 5 seconds or more for far away objects. This can be compensated for by prefocusing. Movie mode is great on paper, but takes up a LOT of memory, and requires a FAST card, or the movie stops, and you get an error message about your card being too slow. It's great that you can zoom while you record (WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE DO THIS?), although the microphone, instead of on the front, is on the top of the camera, right where your finger would likely fall with a two hand grip.

For me, I still haven't warmed up to it 100%, but I'm still pretty happy with it. I wish it did better in low light, but every camera makes compromises, and this one fits me well. I think a firmware update could fix most of my gripes, but I suspect that isn't going to really happen. Manufacturers put their effort into new products.

I was a little nervous about Abe's of Maine, but they sent a US-destined camera (Some budget mail order places offer low prices by selling items meant for another country), and it shipped immediately, and got it in time for my vacation. I'm pleased.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

I bought this camera bout 5 months ago for a cruise to Alaska. have had digital cameras since their beginings and am amazed how far they have come. I got this one because of the 10x optical (digital zoom just does not excite me)

The camera performed very well during the trip. lot's of oppourtunuties to play with settings. panoramic scenic vista shots galore, rapid movement shots enabled me to get some great whale tail photos, the 10x lens allowed me to zoom in and out extremely well so I was able to get severally different takes on a subject without moving an inch. Being on a cruise ship does not always allow you to be in the optimal location for a shot, so it was nice to just zoom it in. The macro feature also performed well as I took many pictures of the native flora.
It took me a little work to get the hang of the video namely holding the little camera steady (a tripod would have helped)....the only complaints I have are:
1-absence of viewfinder...old schooler that I am I had trouble finding my subject when zoomed in....esp with wildlife shots as many times I had to react in an instant and had trouble centering the subject on the screen. I have several great whale shots with the subject in the corner of the screen. (although the high megapixel rate allowed me to crop the photo later and still come out with a great shot)
2) the camera ate up battery life quickly so I was happy to have 2 extra's on the trip....

all in all a great little performer

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

This camera is probably also very good for Business use; however, I purchased for Travel. While using it, it attracted the attention of people around me, interested in the photos it quick displayed. Snapping shots while in a moving vehicle... easy. The ability to change between modes a real plus. Response usually quick enough that I could try optional shots to make sure I got the photo. I noticed 'shutter lag' a couple times. Perhaps operator error. I haven't yet downloaded the photos, so that will tell me whether I had the right size selected. That part was a bit confusing as the instruction booklet used a 'measure' I wasn't familiar with. I am pleased because I had quickly reviewed the manual and tried a couple sample shots before my travel, and I still could figure what to do. I did not use the video. I found re-setting the travel feature to change... confusing. I shut it off after awhile. It will be interesting to see how it handles business use.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

I purchased the TZ5 as a replacement to my venerable TZ1 which I've used mostly as a second camera for vacations, etc when I don't feel like carrying my DSLR. The TZ5 adds some great improvements over the earlier models such as the 3.0" screen and "quick menu" button that allows for speedy adjustment of camera settings. Although the noise level at higher ISO is an improvement, it still could be better. Picture sharpness, color saturation, and clarity are spot on for a camera in this price range. The 720p video mode is a fun feature which produces better-than-expected video quality. Lastly, if you're really looking for a compact, pocketable P/S that has excellent focal length, I say for now, this is what you want.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

Many adjustments are possible but they only have to be set up once and then you can use it most cases as a point-and-shoot. Otherwise you can adjust for all kinds of adverse lighting conditions.
The primary selling point for me for this camera the the wide angle and the 10X optical zoom. The wide angle is 35mm equivalent of a 28mm lens. This makes group shots in close quarters very easy. 10X zoom also is great but of course for sharp zooms, you need a steady perch. Camera is a little larger than my previous very small camera but still acceptable pocket size. It does a lot in a small size. If you purchase this camera, I would strongly recommend a spare battery. The battery life seemed a little short with heavy flash and low light conditions. The battery "recovered" some what with a period of rest, but when the battery starts running low, it can go from indicated 1/2 charge on battery meter to zero in a handful of pictures. Better with a backup. For my snapshot photos, I'll give it 4.5 out of 5.0. It has much more capabilities than I'll ever use.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

I purchased the TZ5 as a companion to my Nikon D80 and to be a camera that my wife would use. The TZ5 size allows it to easily travel with us and is very comfortable to hold and use.

My wife sets it to "iA"; zooms to frame, and enjoys the results on the great screen. She now takes almost as many shots as me.

The TZ5 does not replace my D80 but because of its' carry ability, gets lots of opportunity for shots that I would not of taken because I did not want to carry my D80. I set the color to "vivid", have lots of flash options and a great zoom range. The battery gives us about 140 shots so a spare is good to have. I have little interest in the movie mode so have not used it. The photo playback options are good and the screen size and color make it wonderful to view.

There are many shooting options allowing good photos under various conditions and gives some creative opportunity. I shoot full file so I can crop to my taste.

I carefully researched the TZ5 before I purchased and am very pleased with my selection. Go buy one and enjoy!

The only minor two I can think of is lack of exposure and apperture manual controls and wireless.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

As simple as buttering bread! I could not believe the outdoor photos I took the first few weeks I had the camera. No matter whether the light was high or low, whether the sun was in front of or behind the subject, the camera made the adjustments and took an unbelievable photo. The 10X zoom was one thing that I needed for outdoor animal photos and this camera filled the need at a very reasonable price. It is so small that I can carry it in my breast pocket while I'm out hunting or fishing all day and I don't even know it is with me.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

This camera's wide angle lens and 10x optical zoom make it very useful in many situations. It may be the best travel portable digital on the market. Excellent color reproduction, Great Value, Fine Battery Life and Great Features, including hi-def video recording make this a serious contender. My minor gripes include a somewhat slow shutter and startup, this camera is not a pocket camera and the 'mode dial' (the little wheel on the top that you use to change between modes) is too easily accidently rotated when in and out of it's bag or a pocket.Overall an excellent value, fine picture taker and among the best cameras in it's class, if not (currently) the best. Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

This is the only camera I take when traveling not on assignment-28-280mm
equivalent in a package that fits in your shirt pocket! Almost instant on so you don't miss shots. Large, bright screen. Long battery life-camera "sleeps"
if you don't use it for a while but is ready immediately when you need it.

The only cons-only shoots jpg's and you have to be careful if you have a bright background or sky so the highlights don't blow out. I just point it
so the meter sees the bright area, lightly hold the shutter release and frame the shot and shoot..adjust the brightness and contrast later in Photoshop curves and levels.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

This is a great camera for the price. Lens is excellent. Battery life is excellent too. Easy to use. Picture size is overwelming. My previous camera was a Kodak V550 5Mega pixel and the picture size was 4 times less. Autofocus takes time at High end of the zoom. Flash pictures not so great. Photos too soft for me. Would pefer sharper images because pictures were sharper on my V550 and I liked that. Overall, it's a good camera.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

got this for my wife as a mother's day gift from our kids. She loves it. She's used it for work (environmental scientist field work) and taken excellent shots - much better than what her boss was used to seeing. Good form-factor, altho a bit larger than Canon SD series, it still travels easily. As an amateur, it is all she needs. For my own purposes, I miss the manual controls that I'd get in the Lumix LX3, but that's twice as much. That camera's advantages include RAW, better Leica sumi lens, wider angle for landscapes, and fast 2.0 lens. But I'd miss the 10x lens this TZ5 has. Lowepro makes a perfect case for it.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

There are many things to like about this compact point and shoot camera---the long zoom, excellent screen, great movie mode, good build quality; battery life; wide angle lens; good daylight results.

BUT...forget about using it in low light without the flash. The lens is too slow and clarity is severely compromised beginning at ISO 400. Use the flash and try to avoid shooting at ISOs above 200. You will find that the camera program defaults much of the time to wide open (f3.3) at relatively low shutter speeds. Thus, you are unable to use the optical sweet spot of the lens, and the slow shutter speeds put a lot of pressure on optical image stabilization.

Furthermore, the zoom range yields long minimum focal lengths (6 feet) at some settings. This minimum focal length shows up on the screen when zooming, but if you miss it, you end up with an out of focus result. There also seem to be occasional shots where the auto focus fails for unknown reasons.

Having said this, outdoor results are great. Even the extra range of the digital zoom yields usable results.

Oh how I wish the flaws were not there. I could really like this little camera.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

I love this camera. Starting with the basics, the LCD is high-res and gorgeous. Its lens produces sharp images.

It is fairly poor in low light, because anything over ISO400 produces pretty grainy images. This can be said for most compacts, however.

When I bought this camera, I had no idea that it had auto exposure bracketing! When I found this, I started making HDR photos like crazy. Its fun.

Its zoom works well, but images seem to soften up at the long end of the zoom.

That said, its a perfect travel camera. Its movie mode produces 720p movies, which, although grainy, are of generally great quality for showing friends and family.

I love this camera, and couldn't imagine anyone being disappointed with it if they are looking for a good compact camera.

Easy to use, has both telephoto and wide angle lense settings. Excellent travel camera, small but has metal body, not plastic, and enough weight to hold steady when shooting. Battery life is good, suggest having an extra battery. I have used this cameral in many Asian and South American countries with no problems. A two gig SD card with a slight pixel reduction will hold some 700 photos with excellent clarity. This is a very inexpensive camera for an advanced Leica lense.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Digitial Camera - Black:

Actually I wanted to buy SLR camera like Nikon D80 but could not afford it but after immersing myself into the camera reviews and rating. I found out that Panasonic TZ5K is an excellent choice, usually I prefer sony in point and shoot cameras.TZ5K has a wide of 28mm which is very useful for group photos and landscapes and a great 10x zoom, great for wildlife photography.I am more than satisfied with this camera, my friend who owns Rebel xti and myself went for a nature photography trip and his SLR results were below average as compared to my awesome TZ5K pictures. When we viewed our pictures on a 42inch LCD screen everyone thought I was using Semi-Professional SLR cameras, none believed it was a point and shoot. One website which helped me immensely in my decision was [@].I call this camera,"Compact SLR".
