i use the the camera only for fun and travel and its quite acceptable...only thing i dont like is the lag time...feel like u are still operating a grand fathers camera...i mean come on.... cannon is suppose to be the best...they should either make gud camera or stop making them but not the one with a lag time

This is a good all around camera. I was hoping that this is as small as the elph series. The plastic body is major turn off. The plastic body is a give away. Also I haven't figured how to use camera in stealth mode. I use this camera in construction job sites. I hope it survives rough handling and dirty environs.

This is a great camera for those who still haven't gotten use to digital cameras yet, like my dad. Its simple and clean. Two functions, PLAY & SHOOT. A590 doesn't have movie function for those who assume every digital camera has one now. Great hand grip. Its uses two AA batteries for those who hate using canon's rechargeable batteries, not because of life span but the problem when you forget to recharge the batt on a trip. One major thing I "HATE" about this camera is how the battary is held. When I open the compartment to get to the SDHC Memory, the battery pop up and if you forget to hold the camera upside down the batteries slide out.

I am using this product right now as a starter camera and it is great just for that with its Easy Mode or for the semi-pro with all the seetings you can imagine. It seems to have it all for a mid range pixel camera with 4X zoom. I really like the stabilization, red eye correction and face detection features. Beautiful pictures so far!! Taking photo classes sp perfect from start to finish for that purpose.

Starts up very quickly. Focus is good especially helped with image stabilization.
Batteries go fast, so be prepared. Takes AA's so they are easy and relatively cheap to find.
Was looking for a good travel camera that wasn't "too" small for a man's hand and this works fine. Has nice grip on right where the battery compartment is.

Compare to Canon 20D which I used for several years the PowerShot A590 IS is much smaller and lighter. Pictures quality sometimes is even better than 20D. Image III processor is mush
faster than Image II (20D).
For in home use possible to use an additional

Good, cost-effective solution to my needs. I use this camera for taking fun family photos. My two and a half year old daughter was able to take photos (pretty good ones!) with this camera.

It is a compact camera. I like the AA battery support (if my batteries run out of juice, I can shop for AAs anywhere - not limited by a Li ion for which I need to look for a power outlet; perfect for traveling/outdoor purposes)

I'm a well informed consumer and I do alot of research before making any major purchases;in this economic climate you have to be smart about how you spend. This being said, I'm all about getting good quality even at a premium, but if I can get this same great quality on the cheap why not? Besides, it would be fiscally irresponsible of me to buy a camera above what I need, with all the bells and whistles that I'll probably never even use. So as a casual photographer that knows quality when he sees it I chose the highly regarded Canon PowerShot A590 IS.
It takes sharp and vibrant colored pictures reproducing accurate skin tones. The image stabilization (IS) works wonders in unstable situations (i.e. car rides, boating trip, too much coffee in the morning, etc.).
The plastic construction is not as sturdy as Canon's Elph series' metal bodies (I've owned two of them but gave them away as gifts to needy charities) but is having metal body worth the extra $100 or so? Besides, I like the more ergonomically shaped body on the Canon A590 because it fits more naturally in my hand than did the ELPH cameras. It is slightly more bulky than the ELPH but not by much, so it didn't bother me.
Performance and design plus the price make this camera a smart buy. Take a look at some of the professional reviews on the Net and you'll see that most agree that for the price the Canon PowerShot A590 IS is hard to beat.

I read great reviews about this camera and the price was right. The things I liked the most that seems to be unavailable in sub-$200 cameras are the viewfinder (great for saving batteries, I can take 100 shots on a set of batteries) and ability to take AA batteries (great if you forget to charge your camera - just pick some up from any gas station). The quality is great, video is good too.

A great product for casual photos. I brought this camera for < $200.

The only problem that I consistently see on all cameras that are in this price range is that the image is not sharp when magnified to its maximum extent. This is irrespective of how many pixels a camera packs into a photo.

As a conclusion, this is one of the best product for fun and family photos, and may not be suitable for professional photos.

I use this cameria every day in appraising, I take 50-75 pictures of every house.
It replaced a A570, which I dropped on it's lens.
The A590is appears to be the same body, but it doesn't eat batteries as fast as the A570is.
I've tried some arena type pics but they didn't turn out good, but I'll admit I need to play with it more.
Cons my date battery was DOA.

The camera is great and easy to work with. Various modes are easy to find and use. It takes great pictures with minimum fuss with settings. Flash is also of decent size (unlike some of the smaller camera's).

Great camera and well worth the price. I have three other Canon digital cameras in the A500-A600 series and they have all been winners. I gave the others to members of my family as gifts and they are all still working.
if there is a disadvantage to these cameras, they tend to have a fairly long lag time- perhaps 7-8 seconds between shots. If you use flash, always carry a second set of batteries so you are not disappointed. Aside from these somewhat minor disadvantages, the camera ( and its cousins) is overall a real winner to me- or else I would not have bought some many over the past two years.

I purchased this camera as a pocket travel companion for snapshots and family photos when it is inconvenient to lug my DSLR. I'm very pleased with the overall performance. The controls are very intuitive and easy to access. I particularly like the exposure compensation button. This is a good little camera. I'm happy with my other Canon cameras and bought it for that reason. I can carry it in my pocket and get some great shots without lugging around a lot of equipment. However, I don't recommend it for action shots because of the long lag time.

Bought for my wife who values simplicity and ease of use. She likes it, and that says a lot.

1. It has a real viewfinder just like her old film camera.
2. It has a dedicated slide switch to go between taking pictures and looking at pictures. It also has a dedicated on/off button. To take pictures turn the big knob to AUTO. Then you can forget about it!
3. In AUTO, when it is too dark, it uses its flash, just like my wife's film camera did.
4. Printing couldn't be simpler! Connect a cable to a photo-printer, turn them both on, look at photos, and then press the blue button on the camera to print the photo you are looking at.
More details about printing:
A. Pict-bridge enabled, works seamlessly with compatible printers (we have an Epson Picturemate printer, and it interfaces without a hitch, meaning you don't have to do anything, period).
B. The cable you need is packaged WITH the camera. No worries about finding and buying a special cable!
C. The print button on the camera LIGHTS UP BLUE so you will not have any trouble finding it to push it.

We can absolutely recommend this camera to any casual photographer. Other reviews might point out how good the pictures are, which is also quite true. We bought rechargeable batteries for it, but if they quit, we can use REGULAR AA BATTERIES also. This solves travel worries!

This is a nice little camera and a great one if you want to take few quick snaps in a social gathering or while you travel but don't want to carry bulky cameras. It has enough manual controls to satisfy more enthusiastic shooters and it does take much better picture when you can actually tweak few parameters manually.The IS is pretty good too. However on the downside it has a considerable amount of lag time. Night photo is OK and the overall picture quality is good [$].The handling and controls are not the easiest of the one I have seen but those who have little familiarity with canon cameras would not need much time to figure out.Overall a good point and shoot camera for casual photographers.

You can't beat this camera for the ease of use, quality of photos and excellent quality of video at a very affordable price. The Kids and Pets setting is awesome for catching my grandkids on the move! I bought one for my 9 year old granddaughter for Christmas because she wants to be a professional photographer someday. I purchased this camera last month and I am very happy with the performance. This camera has some good features like red eye correction, image stabilization and face detection. Also, the software provided makes it a lot easier to transfer and e-mail the pictures. The only weak point is the short battery life. So, have lot of batteries ready. He has almost no use of his hands and fingers yet he has been able to use the A590 to take some great photos. The size and shape of the camera body suits his limited ability to hold a camera and he is able to manipulate the controls, buttons and levers of the A590 with his finger tips and knuckels. Our son is very pleased with the A590 and has taken some nice quad rugby photos. Thanks Canon!

I use this camera to take pictures of everyday life and plan to use it next year on a trip to visit my daughter in who's studying in Germany. I love to take pictures and the pictures so far have shown to turn out great with good resolution, clarity and color. I is a little complicated for a novice like me but I'm learning and will master it. I love the camera so far and would recommend it to strangers and have already recommended it to other family members.

Intuitive easy to use settings allowing macro and control or point and shoot. Sharp lens and pleasing color presentation. Used A540 in Africa with great success. Lost it...replaced it with A590 IS that I wanted anyway.

I really love my new camera. The only thing I wish were better, is time between picture readiness when using the flash. It seems to take a few seconds to "get ready" for a new picture. I guess that is because of the type of batteries.

I primarily use the camera for digiscoping, I use the sakar lens adapter with a clear UV lens filter to protect the zoom lens from being damaged by the spotting scope. I attach camera to small radian mounting bracket.

I was looking for a nice compact digicam that took AA batteries and had an optical viewfinder. This Canon fit the build nicely. Excellent zoom range, good battery life with recharceable AA's, decent viewfinder for size of camera, large LCD screen, optical stabilization, 8 megapixels, and even allows for accessory lenses! The only drawback is the relatively low LCD resolution. I guess you can't have everything! Otherwise, I'd rate 5 stars.

I carry this camera with me every day for spontaneous photos. It is a bit large for this purpose but has lots of settings that can be controlled manually. I sometimes take walks during my lunchtime at work and have taken some great pictures of various sites downtown. The quality of photos is great once you get used to how the auto focusing system works. I greatly enjoy using the camera; it has a full auto mode for quick everyday photos but has many manual settings for more exacting conditions or when you want to step out of the automatic world and set things up yourself.

Good set of features. Has a manual mode (thing that you can't find in every camera on this price range). Runs on standard AA batteries, so if you run out of batteries, you can always go to a store and purchase a set of regular ones.

It could just have a 640x480 30fps video mode as A570. A590 has only a 20fps mode in this resolution.

Overall, it's a nice camera. I've recommended it to four other friends.

Very easy to use-my 10 year old takes good pictures and understands the various settings. The video is a big plus. Easy software to download to PC.

We replaced an older Canon with the A590. We really like the image stabilization. It eliminates those blurred photos from camera shake. Also, the shutter lag has been reduced significantly. It is much easier to capture photos at the kids sporting events. Overall very happy with the purchase.

I used this camera for landscape, historical buildings/structures, and portraits on a recent trip to Russia. The landscape photos were very good, but the portrait photo resolution is terrible. I have an older, inexpensive, 6 megapixel camera, different manufacturer, with a manual flash which is so much better in almost every respect, including portrait resolution. The function icons are difficult to distinguish...it seems that the images are blurred. I would have returned this camera for a refund except my 30 day return option had expired when I returned from Russia.

The long shutter lag, poor resolution on the LED screen and shutter vibration immediately turned me off. I wondered how Canon could put its name on this product as I own several Canon cameras with much higher quality of performance. I was attracted by the low price and listed features, but it didn't deliver. I returned the camera.
