This is my family's 3rd Canon Powershot. I originally bought one for myself, and then subsequently, bought one for each of my two sons.

The Powershot just keeps getting better and better. It has everything you want in a point & shoot camera - it's easy, intuitive to use, and most importantly, takes fabulous pictures.

I used the Canon SD870 for years and didn't think I would another camera in the Canon point-and-shoot lineup that matched the all-in-one quality of the 870. The 970 turned out to be all that and more! The HD video is fabulous and the image quality is usually fantastic.

After using the camera for a few weeks, my only qualms are:

- Image stabilization isn't perfect; may be related to the camera's average to poor handling of indoor light

- No optical zoom during video recording (the digital zoom looks terrible during video for some reason)

Overall, I would definitely recommend this camera. I'm buying one for my parents for their upcoming vacation.

Took this camera to Paris. Took great pictures, good color, nice resolution. Lots of fun features. Easy to transport. Nice large, bright viewing screen, but still somewhat difficult to see in bright light. Would be better with wide angle lens and viewfinder.
Still liked the camera a lot, although it is a bit expensive for a point and shoot camera.

Bought this camera specifically to use on a family vacation to the Wisconsin Dells....wanted somthing smaller that we could take anywhere ...but would still take great pictures and video...the 16 gb card that was extra came in handy......we recorded 8 gb during our vacation....the 12.1 mega pix provided exceptional detail and the video this camera records makes the need for a seperate video recorder obsolete...overall i love this camera so far...if your looking for a great point and shoot ....this camera would be a great choice....also....Abes of Main...is a great site [...]

Use this for fun family photos when I don't want to drag around the SLR. My last powershot went swimming. Tried the Nikon point and shoot and didn't like controls or picture quality. Very pleased with everything about the 970 so far

I just bought this camera a few weeks ago. I've received many compliments on the photo quality so far, and I'm impressed with the auto function which takes great pictures with point and click convenience.

Battery life is great. I bought an extra battery, but I'm starting to doubt I will ever use it.

I used this to take pictures at a recent concert, and they came out great. The 5x optical zoom really helps.

However, like many cameras this one suffers in low light. Unless you have a tripod or use a flash you cannot get clear pictures without blurring. I've never seen a camera that doesn't do this, so I can't really nitpick too much for that.

This camera is great. I have owned a number of cameras due to my inability to take care of them. I used to own a couple of the Sony pocket sized cams in the same price range that took very flat images. The camera wasn't large enough to take good photos. Then I switched over to the Canon's. This helped the photo quality due to the extending lenses. This is especially good in this camera, with the better lens and optical zoom. I gave my mom the SD790 for Christmas and liked it as much as the last one I had. These just keep getting better.

To summarize, the two best things about this are the new LCD that is introduced in this. My girlfriend has a Fujitsu point and shoot that's a couple of years old and I borrowed her memory card while I got mine in the mail. Her pictures looked amazing on this screen (and not so much on hers). The next is with some fast memory (MAKE SURE TO GET FAST MEMORY with high megapixel cameras) this thing can take pictures as fast as I can turn it on and push the button. I'm guessing this has to do with the new DIGIC4 processor. This things flies and takes great pictures. The only downside I've noticed is that with these new features the battery life sucks. I even ordered a new extended battery, but these things only last like half as long as the older SD680 that I had. So you might want to get a couple.

I got this as an addition to the Canon SLR, wanted something a lighter to tote around and still capture great photographs.  This camera does not disappoint.  It has performed great in a variety of weather conditions, hiking trips, camping trips, and various indoor settings.  Ultimately it is going to hike the AT.  I have not experienced any low-light complaints that I read about on several other websites.  Only pseudo-complaint I have is that the shutter release button is not as sensitive as other brands and you have to hold it down a bit longer to release the shutter, not a big deal once you get used to it.  LCD is great.  Also love the ability I have to manipulate the images, makes me not miss the SLR quite so much. As an afterthoguht, it is also a bit heavier than I expected, but feels good in hand.  All in all, great camera, love it.

This is a great little camera. It takes wonderful shots, has many useful presets, and allows for a decent amount of adjustment. One thing I was disappointed with was the lack of manual aperture adjustment. There is, however, shutter speed adjustment.

Being that the widest it goes is 37mm, it is great for the 5x zoom, but not so great for capturing a close scene or huge building without moving back a bit.

The video recording is great, it adjusts for exposure on the fly, but unfortunately, you cannot zoom while recording.

The camera is very small, the LCD is great, the battery life is excellent.
