This camera is a fair compromise between a point&shoot and a digital SLR. Looks like DSLR but smaller and lighter. Has electronic viewfinder for normal use (especially important in bright daylight where LCDs washout) but also has nifty folding and swiveling LCD (faces front, back, up or down when folded out, and faces out (back) or in (protected) when folded in. Lens is not interchangable, but no need to swap because it has a 28mm wide angle (35mm equivalent) and 560mm tele equivalent, with optical image stabilization. Camera's auto mode works well for P&S snaps and shutter/aperature/manual/scene modes give you plenty of control for when you want it. My biggest complaint is the weak low light performance but that's due to the small P&S sized image sensor and slow lens that come with the lower price point.

I love this camera. I am glad I purchased it. It has the faster shutter time, unlike the usual delay of a point and shoot. I use this camera to take pictures of everything (kids, landscapes, day to day stuff, and I will be using it to take Santa pictures in November). The quality of the pictures are great. Nice and sharp. I had my nephew and son jump up and down and there was no blurring. I was able to take pictures from the back of the church without using the flash and they were fine. The first thing I would probably break would be either the flip out LCD or the door for the batteries. I do like that you are able to flip out the LCD. It has a lot of settings that I have never used, but the option to use them is there. I also like that there is an option to use it manually.

I had my previous Digital Cannon Camera for at least over 4.5 years. I dreaded the day it would die and I would have to replace it. But it came and I was not prepared at all. I only knew I wanted another Cannon as mine was so perfect for me. It took great pictures,I had learned how to use it so well, and I was always getting compliments on my photographs from people. I was one of those who had 100's of pictures of my cats,dogs & family. I only showed and printed the best though. My daughter said "The digital camera was invented for me" SO I spent alot of time researching this camera a full day of it.I mean a FULL 12 + hours online reading each and every bit of info on this camera before I bought it. I actually started out looking at other models besides this. But kept coming back to this one.I am glad I did. I loved several things about it. Right away,I like the switch to video right on the back of the camera. You can be shooting a pic, and switch that quickly.No turning of the knob as before. The just as quickly got back to shooting standard photos. I like that it tells people like me to raise the flash,I like it tells me to remove the lense cap.All things I sometimes do need to be reminded to do as my last camera did not have either. I had an Olympus before, A Mju 700 and I thought Olympus cameras were the best. The SX10IS completely changed my opinion after my Purchase. However I cud'nt quite decide if I wanted to go for this one or a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ 28. But I'm glad I picked this one.. I wanted more zoom than the HD options on the Panasonic.. And Ask any Camera Enthusisast and theyd prefer Nikon, Canon Panasonic in the same order. Only Problem was the Nikons in this league were very expensive and hence a Canon..But no regrets at all whatsoever..

Upgraded from the SX3 IS and took the SX10 on a 2 week trip thru AZ's national parks and monuments, taking over 1600 photos. The SX10 IS exceeded my expectations on every feature I used. The 20X zoom, with anti-shake produced clear shots. The macro was great also. The stitch capability produced outstanding panoramic shots.Haven't tested all the features yet; but, the features I used performed flawlessly.

I have seen a few people report "No threads for Filters" YES, IT DOES HAVE THEM! "Poor Battery Life". I have rechargeable NMiH batteries. The first day I used the camera I recorded a 45 minute show and took over 400 pictures. I don't waste my time with alkaline, except when I run out of juice with my rechargeables. This camera replaced a 2IS that my 2 year old grandson dropped on the floor. Everything about the 10IS blows the sox off the 2IS, which was an exceptionally good camera in its day. I love the 20X optical zoom and when you add the digital zoom on top of that, you won't believe the shots you can get!! I also bought the 16GB memory card for my camera. Set to the highest resolution (10MP) I can take just under 6,000 pictures. If I set the resolution to lowest (.5MP) I can take over 120,000 pictures! Not that I would leave that many pix on the card but its nice knowing if I went to a really long trip, I wouldn't have to worry about filling the card up!

Want an SLR without the price tag? Worried about bringing around your expensive SLR but want strong quality? This camera has been everything I was hoping for. This is our third generation we have owned of Canon mini-SLRs and it is the best one yet. Some of my friends have $1000 SLR cameras that take wonderful pictures. However, they are always lugging around a large camera and bag. Plus the stress of getting it damaged at sporting events, traveling, or with kids around.

The Canon is sturdy, compact and comes with an attainable price tag in he $300 range. This also has all of the features you want in a point and shoot with the built in flash, quick toggle from view to shoot, some editing features (most I haven't even used yet), and a bright swivel LCD. Best of all it is fast. This was our most important feature as we are trying to capture two boys under five and they don't hold still for anyone. We have had some quality pictures that I was sure would be blurred or missed because there was only one instant to get the shot.

There are many more features on the camera like the burst shot, good video recording capabilities, and instant prints with most printers. The only cons have been poor storage for the lens cap and no memory chip (but the new high speed chips are becoming less expensive and really make for a better ease of use). Overall, it is the best camera we have owned and I cannot wait to use it on our next vacation.

I would say if you want to use the program modes you need to have an idea what your doing. I have a Canon 40d and i did have a tuff time setting it up the way i wanted it.

The quality of the photos is great!!

This camera is great for the hobbist that doesn't want to lug around all those extra lens. The 20x optical has plently of strength for most any shot I need. The picture quality is A++++. I bought this camera as a birthday present for my sixteen year old who is interested in photography. It is his first "adult" camera. It takes great photos, is easy to use, and has super magnification. It is the equivalent of a digital SLR without the necessity of changing lenses. He has not put it down since he received it.

Bought this as my first step into digital photography. This replaced a simple film point and shoot, and my outdated Nikon 5005 (also film). I love the SLR, but it's a bit much for my wife, so this was a great compromise. She can use the auto setting, or I can flip to manual settings. Great photo quality, very easy to use. I recommend rechargable batteries. The zoom is great. Thought about the Canon G10, but this was a bit less money for nearly the same rig. Can't go wrong w/the SX10.

It's going to take some time to learn to effectively use all the features. The menus aren't terribly intuitive; thus there is a learning curve involved. The 52MM threads on the lens could better be described as "threads". They don't seem to allow a UV filter, for example, or the lens cap, to snug up tight. Picture quality, so far, seems excellent.

This is my first "real" camera since buying a Sony Mavica 10X back in the day. In all honesty, the Canon Powershot SX10IS is everything and more than I expected. From the very affordable price (Abe's being the lowest) to the chock-a-block features to the professional look and feel, the SX10IS is truly a digital camera that won't be obsolete in six months.

Even for a hack like me, the SX10IS was easy to set up and start shooting nearly right out of the box. There's enough features to keep you interested and experimenting for months. Or, have you taking exceptional photos even if you keep it on Auto mode.

If ever there was an "all things to all people" camera that really did it all, this is it!

I bought this specifically for the 20x telephoto lens. It worked EXCELLENT. We were on the beach on Kauai taking pictures of breaching whales. They look as if you are on a whale watching boat about as close as you can get without the whale coming to you. I looked at other cameras but they all had 18x or lower lenses.

ZoomBrowser EX comes with the camera and while it has a movie edit function, it doesn't work on video shot with this camera. I emailed Canon Support about a fix but never got a reply. I am disappointed by their failure to respond to this.

I have not completely used all the features of the camera. Few pictures taken at mid-nights are (w/flash) are very good and clear. I really like that pictures and I am little not satistified on 1 or 2 pictures taken without the flash. The Zooming is very good.

I am very pleased with this camera. I own several other digital cameras, however this is by far my favorite. I bought it for the 20x zoom.

I was nervous after reading some of the user reviews, however I now believe the negatives must be from extreme perfectionists or total novices. I find it to be very easy to use with great quality pictures if you have a basic working knowledge of digital cameras.

It's a great overall camera especially if you like to take close up shots from a distance. I would recommend buying a lens cap strap, however.

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!

precise manual controls but a bit complex for beginners. u just need to know the options and what are they used for. u need to work on it for once and its done forever, u'll be expert in handling ur camera.

getting habituated to complex controls is just a matter of time. slowly u can master them.

its inbuilt sports mode is rocking and it is very useful in taking shots while traveling and while in stadium or watching a live airshow. its 20x optical zoom gives u the power to peep into micro details of the object and very helpful if ur more into professional photography and even casual photographers can take advantage of this high zoom optics.

good product for intermediate photographers who are learning to become expert photographers. beginners can use the auto mode and program auto mode and slowly learn the other options.

camera's user manual will be of great help at times.

I just graduated from the point and shoot cameras and i cudnt have asked for a better deal.
The processor is superfast making the transition between clicking and reviewing is really quick.
The various modes ( night/ sports/ macro) are great for a beginner like me.
the zoom is mind blowing. I went to the Vikings Vs Eagles game in Minneapoils, sat on the last row.. and was able to zoom in on the field and get great pics of the game!!

I am upgrading from a Canon T90 - this camera, the Canon SX10IS, is reasonably intuitive based on Canons previous cameras' controls. The lag time is much shorter than some digital cameras from a couple years ago - much closer to a 35mm SLR. The range of the zoom is excellent and so far the images are first rate.

Another great product from Canon! It even feels like a real camera should! Not lightweight or flimsy like the other top contenders (ie. fuji, kodak, panasonic, etc.)! Not your "shirt pocket" point and shoot camera, it is large and heavy BUT it takes fantastic pictures. It can be operated as a "simple point and shoot with lots of bells and whistles for this purpose" OR it can get as nitty gritty and complicated as you wish. The new dial is troublesome. Each time i try to set the exposure compensation, I end up touching MF . Or I end up changing the ISO

That dial sucks and makes something that was easy, very hard.
It was so easy to change the aperture or speed wiht my S2IS.

I bought the camera for my family. I was tired of shutter lag and blurry pictures. This camera rocks! It is very simple to use. The picture settings bring up a brief explanation on the LCD window. This Camera is very user friendly. The large LCD screen can be manipulated so that you can shoot yourself and see the screen.

I've only had this camera a couple of weeks but am very happy with it so far. Love the Zoom. Love having a view finder again. Love the adjustable LCD. I'm taking a photo class and my instructor is very happy with this camera.

The camera is heavier than I'd expected. I'm disappointed that it lacks the little cord to attach from the lens cover to the camera as older versions had....when you're in a hurry you don't have time to try to clip the cover on to the strap....easy to lose the cap. Strange that it did not include memory card or battery charger in box.

I have only had this camera for 2 weeks, but I already love it. I used it to photograph a wedding (indoor/outdoor) and a small birthday party for my 97 year old Aunt. The picture quality is superb and the image stabilization seemed to add greatly to the sharpness of my pictures.
The zoom--20X optical and 80X digital--is one of the major reasons I was attracted to this model, and I have not been disappointed. I shot some surfers at 80X using a post to help stabilize my hand and the images were sharp and clear. I could barely see the people with my naked eye, so was totally amazed when I saw the picture.
The response time is also great. It comes on in less than 2 seconds and continuous shooting is without apparent delay. I still don't know all the features, so I haven't discovered how to force flash to use as a fill for back lighted images, and the automatic settings handle situations like that in a less than great manner. Again, I haven't had time to totally read the manual, so I am reluctant to blame the camera.
I have only read about the video capability, and what I read in the manual is very exciting. I am in Ho Chi Minh City and the opportunities for video here are endless, so I cannot wait to try this feature.
The worst thing is the clusters of controls which cause unwanted settings to occur. Asking someone to take your photo invariably results in wrong buttons being pressed as someone unfamiliar with the camera tries to find where to hold it without accidentally recalling the last picture or changing the display. It is difficult to find a comfortable way to hold the camera with each hand, and the camera is a bit too heavy to hold with only one hand.
I believe that with time I will learn where to hold the camera without pressing something I didn't want, and I do not consider the clusters of buttons to be an overwhelming problem. I really like this camera and am extremely happy I bought it, and so I would recommend it highly.
