Just brought this camera with me to Alaska. The zoom and overall picture quality was great. I do recommend getting Sanyo Eneloop batteries for higher capacity. The ones that came with the camera tend to run down fast in video mode.
With hi-def video, the result has a jerky playback...very disappointing (but good resolution).Auto focus tends to be a little fussy at times. Wish the controls were more like my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18.

I find that American brands have better written instructions and have better customer support. Kodak is the first major exception. This camera came with a skimpy 23 page manual, my Pentax came with a very thorough 55 pages (although hard to read). For the other 90% of info that I need to know about the Kodak you have to go online! I called customer support 3 times (couldn't understand the first two due to heavy accent) and got the stock scripted answers. One said they could send the rest of the manual for $15. I'm ashamed of Kodak for being so cheap as to not include a complete manual with a [$] dollar camera.

Just used this camera on vacation and took over 800 pictures. This is by far the best of my 6 cameras, in that it has the best zoom yet. You can get pictures of animals without scaring them away first by "sneeking" up to them. The only draw back is that the camera is large, but thats where my other small cameras become useful. You will not be disappointed with your Kodak Z980.

This is my third Kodak Easyshare camera. My last one was a Z612. Very easy to use, not complicated like an SLR. Quality is superb, and I love the 24x zoom. Great for pictures that you want to enlarge to 8x10 or bigger without losing the quality of the picture. Close-ups are great too!! The only negative I have found is the 5 second delay between taking pictures. Wish it would be faster when I'm taking pictures of my 9 month old granddaughter. Still haven't used all of the features yet though, so there may be a solution for that.

I bought this to replace my digital SLR because it was so bulky to carry I almost always used a small point & shoot instead.
I am actually very pleased with this camera, excellent photo quality, very good (720 HD) video too. According to Kodak, only the digital zoom works with the video, actually, the optical zoom also works which is a big, big plus!
It has a hot shoe for an external flash, can shoot raw video and has a nice burst.
The 3 in LCD display is great quality, the color viewfinder is also very good!
The Panoramic Photo Stitch mode is amazing! It will allow you to take three photos, with a neat way of helping you line up each photo, then will stitch them together in-camera for amazing results.
The battery life is a little less than I expected maybe due to the large LCD and the amount of zooming I have been doing but is acceptable. I suggest buying a 2nd set of batteries (only about $10 in most big box stores)a better charger would also help, some are available that will charge the batteries in 1-2 hours and are not expensive.
The included manual is not very helpful though detailed information is available on the KODAK web-site.
The included software does not impress me, I am using Adobe Photos-shop Elements instead!
Bottom line!
This is a superb camera for both photos and video! I am very impressed and very pleased with it. Too bad Kodak skimped on the accessories !

It does have a nice zoom and that is why I upgraded from a Z812IS, but I am very disappointed in the image stabilization, because if you shake the least little bit it shows thru the view finder or lcd and on outside shots it then will not hold the focus using the zoom.
So it really is not what I expected.

Light, easy to use, loads of setting choices; I don't use the portrait orientation handhold attachment that much.

Great camera for long-distance shots, closeups, and everything in between. HD video with zoom, Image Stabilization, and a great price! Definitely worth the money, size, and weight.
