i did some research on cameras for my girlfriend and this one seemed the best: great zoom, brilliant lcd, and very easy to operate. so far it's been great. pictures look good and the zoom is tight. it's a little heftier than an elph, but no too too big.

It used it to take video and picture. The HD video is good but there is some focusing issue even I have the latest firmware 1.2 when taking video. The photo quality is ok not as good as my old Olympus c770. The mjpeg is big. Beside all these, I think it is a acceptable camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

I just started using the camera...in Cooperstown, NY...shooting pictures of my grandson and his team playing baseball. I was using it for action sports shots to begin with. Had some challenges...but that may have been me...as I am still learning all there is to know about the camera. I have taken some great shots, though..sports and fun photos. I have run into a few situation in low lighting where I wasn't happy with the quality of the pictures. Another concern...the batteries are advertised to be long lasting. They don't last as long as they should in, my opinion...although the way I was using the camera may have had something to do with that. I was doing a lot of editing as I went along...and I had it in the "on" position for long periods of time. One other dissapointment...I wish I could zoom from 10x - 16x one step at a time. In spite of the negatives I am very happy with the camera.

10X zoom is great as is the HD video capabilities. The intelligent auto mode is handy for those quick shots and the image stabilization works well in both picture and video mode. The wide variety of scene modes are also very cool. Oh, and being able to zoom in and out in video mode is a nice touch. Overall I highly recommend the TZ5. It's big fun!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

I am moving from a Canon A95 (5 mp) to this camera and expected an increase in photo quality as well as photo size. Despite all my research, the photo quality of this camera (sharpness, color saturation, exposure) are not as good as my old Canon. It is a nice camera with plenty of good features. I like the size of it and it shoots superior video to my old Canon but I am disappointed overall. I can put the camera on a tripod and take 3 identical pictures and the camera will take 3 different exposures. The flash is also difficult to work with as it will work automatically even when the exposure length is 1/15 or 1/8 causing blurry pictures. Care must be taken in the setup to ensure that doesn't happen.

While I gave this camera to my 14 year old daughter, she lets me use it and we are both very happy with it. I did extensive research before I purchased it and everything that I have tried has worked better than expected. The lack of viewfinder is the only drawback that I have found but my daughter doesn't miss it at all. The very short picture to picture time is great for sports, not even using the burst mode.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

We had a Fuji FD30 and then a Canon SD1100. Both of them were great, but we never got good indoor shots because it required a lot of button pushing to get to the right settings after outdoor shots. This Panasonic TZ5 is much easier, and it remembers two setups, so you can get from outside shots to inside shots with just one button. Cool. It takes beautiful outdoor shots, and has a very wide lens, which is also better than the previous cameras.

I read reviews of this product that mentioned short battery life and poor performance in low light conditions. I purchased a back-up battery but had to use it only a couple of time during a 24-day trip to Turkey & Greece shooting about 50 photos per day.I am delighted with the performance of this camera in all light conditions. I took a few maximum zoom shots without a tripod and am very pleased with the sharpness of the images. Others have commented on the quality of my photos. Visit [@] to see for yourself. The small size is great for traveling with only carry-on luggage and slipping into a pants pocket when needing to use both hands for other things. Love it!

The more I use this camera the more I like it! Outperforms a Sony 12MP I purchased before this. My old Nikon DSLR took amazing pictures and the Sony was a downgrade. Finally the TZ5 has trumped my trusty DSLR. I have not found anything worth nitpicking with this camera except the A/V access door. I've put some scotch tape over it to keep it from opening and accidentally getting broken off as it is the Achilles heal with the camera. EVERYTHING else is rock solid including performance and features. READ THE MANUAL before you buy this! You will find features not listed that increase the cameras value! Overall I love it and my wife digs the simplicity and beautiful pictures we've taken of our Infant Twin Boys. Rock on Scuba and Ice Man!

This camera is in a class by itself. Huge 3" LCD, 10x zoom, Leica lens...I know the new ZS3 is smaller and better, but for the price you can't simply find a better camera. I've used Nikon, Canon, Olympus but keep coming back to Panasonic. The reasons are simple: great picture quality, plenty of features, Leica lens, and long zoom lens in a semi-compact body.

I had a previous version of this camera, the 7.1 Megapixels version and I liked it and used it often, it is nice size for the features, 10x optical in a pocket size version. I decided to upgrade to the new version and was very happy with the simple upgrades along with the more advanced upgrades. They fixed having to take off the lens cap - minor, but they also added a Auto Focus Feature which I am not sure I have figured out all of it's features, but a very nice addition that was a major addition.

I am the worst picture taker ever! I never took pictures because they were always bad. I researched cameras, and found for ease of operation, picture quality, and price, this was my best bet. I'm still learning how to use some of the features, but for someone who is electronically challenged, this is the best camera I've ever had! I'm taking great pictures, because this camera does almost everything for you.

We took this camera on vacation and found that taking pictures outside in sunlight was difficult without a viewfinder.

The pictures turned out well enough, but composing them was very difficult. It was very hard to see the images on the LCD in the sunlight.

I'm sending it back and get a Lumix with a viewfinder, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 for very little more money.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

I don't tend to take pictures of people - I prefer taking pictures of landscape and scenery, especially on my various vacation travels. Because of that fact, the 10x Optical Zoom is super fantastic. I'm not super well versed in photography, however, as this is only my second camera (and my first is, uhhhhh *cough*), but it doesn't appear to be super weak in low lighting (flash seems okay strength, not as weak as some people mentioned). I haven't really taken a long test drive of this thing, however, and I don't have much experience, but for its price (when I got it, it was [$]total) and the 10x Zoom feature, it's definitely more than I expected. The LCD screen is huge and fantastic for play back as well. There's no viewfinder, but so far it's not that big of a deal. The controls are easy to use with all the most important buttons out in open (ie delete, flash on/off etc.,) as opposed to being buried in menu. I like being able to change to all kinds of different photo types as well (such as scenery vs people). Still playing with it to discover more features. The biggest con might be the battery life. I really haven't used it that much, but it's already down to 1 bar. However I did use a lot of flash, maybe that's why? Getting a backup battery might be a good idea for anyone who's waiting to take this thing on vaca. The camera itself is compact, though it has a bit more protrusion compared to my friend's Canon Powershot. However it's not a great deal larger or heavier.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

I have been using this product for last couple of months. Its really worth buying. With plenty of options in such a compact m/c which can easily be fit in a pocket. And icing on the cake, it is unbelievable on such a low price.

It carries gr8 Leica lenses with superzoom 10x, wide angle and powerful flash, fast performance, 3" wide bright LCD with 460k pixels double than what normally found in cameras.
Also the extended Optical Zoom upto 16x (though compromise with MegaPixels)
Various video options including HD Video at such a price.

Must buy atleast 4GB of HDHC Card with this bcoz its Video eats a lot of memory.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

We have been using the camera for almost 3 weeks during a very busy Christmas season demanding many pictures and videos. We could not be more happy.

Things we were looking for before we bought: 1) portability - we have friends/family with DSLRs AND camcorders, but we did not want to lug around the big bags; 2) Pocket sized; 3) good zoom - it has an excellent 10x zoom; 4) quick shots - it takes 2 seconds to power up to first shot; 5) video - it takes astonishing HD 720p video.

A perfect example of the cameras capabilities: We just had a video scavenger hunt youth activity. There were 5 camcorders present (all tape recorders), 1 cheap digital video recorder, and 1 TZ5 HD recorder. When I pulled it out of my pocket to record, I had to convince the other camcorder holders in the group that the TZ5 was indeed up to the task. It took about 5 minutes over 3 conversations. In the end, when all the videos were being played back, the TZ5 out performed hands down. It was the one of the only times I saw unity in the youth group: All were saying "Wow, your videos were so much better!"

Great things about the camera: 1) the 28mm wide angle - you will only appreciate this once you stop having to back up for pictures while everyone else is backing up another 5-10 feet to get the same shot; 2) the 10x zoom is awesome in that without moving you can capture the closeup look of excitement happening 30 feet away; 3) an HD video recorder and camera all-in-one - some say that the HD video recording feature does not replace the camcorder you will need as well, but this is exactly what we have done; 4) the IA red eye automatically fixes about 75% of the red eyes.

Things to be ready for as this camera is not perfect: 1) When zooming during video recording the camera will go in and out of focus - there is a patch that significantly helped this; 2) it does not fit in a shirt pocket but does fit easily in a jean/pant or coat pocket; 3) pictures in low light take a little finagling to get the picture you want but the IA does do a good job; 4) the sound quality on video recording is not the best, about a 3 on a scale of 1-5.

Thank you Panasonic and Lumix.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

I took it to the Galapagos, and it was absolutely sensational. I caught pictures the likes of which National Geographic photographers lie in wait hours for. Of course, the technical quality does not match NG, because of the perennial Panasonic noise problem, but the trade-off was acceptable vs what a pro-grade gear would cost and weigh. Some hints on how to get the most out of it -- set EV to -1/3, shoot in burst mode, and autobracket whenever you feel the slightest twinge of doubt about the exposure.

The other nice thing was the movie capability. The HD format is spectacular, and the zoom during movie was highly appreciated. A word of warning -- use a tripod or even a ground rest, the lens stabilization works wonders, but not miracles. You need a high-speed class 6 SD card to be able to shoot the hi-def movies.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

This is an OK camera, The 28mm wide angel lens is really good. But a few things keep in mind: It's not for low light condition, especially when shooting videos since you can't use flash, Indoor video quality is pretty bad. Attached image file is extracted from actual footage, 720p mode, that room was actually pretty bright, but still you see a lot of noise. And the video file size is ridiculously large, Panasonic should consider using mpeg4 format rather than motion JPEG. Also the sound recording quality is very, I mean very low. you hear a lot of noise, the mic is located on top of the camera where it is easily blocked by your fingers -- bad bad design.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

This camera takes very good pictures. Especially appreciated is the "Intelligent Auto" feature the
camera has. I would recommend Abe's as a a reputable computer site to buy on line. Even though I felt a bit apprehensive of buying on line, I like the professionalism that Abe's of Maine has when dealing with its customers. The next day after receiving my DMC-TZ5S they called me to make sure that I was satisfied with my purchase. They even explained to me ways I could enhance my buying experience by buying their inexpensive guarantee. Good people!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

I got my camera few weeks back. So far my experience with this camera is kind of amazing. The kind of options you get in this camera is hard to get in any of the competing cameras at this price range. Although it look small but its better then some of the high-end cameras.

Its wide angle lens allows you to capture a scenery photo just like a Professional Photo.

I looked for a small but very capable camera for last 4 months. I evaluated each of my short listed cameras of different brands like Sony, Canon, Nikon, Kodak. My criteria for selecting the camera are, compact size, feature, video recording, battery, night picture, wide lens, professional lens.

Before buying this camera I used a Nikon and also a Canon but this one is superb. Small but powerful and packed with 10x optical zoom. The Intelligent sensor tracks multiple faces in a group photo session and adjust the focus individually.

This Camera teach you something i.e. Small is fun and easy to use and (this one comes) with all the feature and quality of a bigger camera.

Look at some of the close up photographs i got
from this camera....

You would never regret after buying this Camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

Had this product for 2 weeks and bought it mostly for the Leica lens (wider angle and improved optical zoom). We previously had a couple of Casio Exilim versions that couldn't capture anything requiring a wide angle.
For casual users who want more than just small size in a camera, this is hard to beat.
Controls seem a little clunky (old fashioned) but I guess it adds robustness.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

This is my third generation Panasonic/Leica camera. There was nothing wrong with the first two, but I like all the features you include in the new models, and so I just have to own it. A new conveniently located control slider makes it easier to view the photo I just took; and the simplified dial makes it easier to select the proper mode. This camera works well in all settings, and it slides easily into my pocket. All that, plus getting a 10x optical zoom with a wide-angle lens makes it truly a great bargain for the price.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S Digitial Camera - Silver:

I bought this to have as a lightweight versatile vacation camera that I could put in an underwater housing, as I did with it's Canon predecessor.

Diving, the underwater scene mode white balance is very poor, it's really hard to get an in-focus shot as it does very poor in medium to low light (above or below water), shutter lag was worse that the Canon, but the large display is excellent and underwater movies are OK. Macro underwater is hopeless. This needs huge strobes to work well underwater. The housing however, is great.

Above water, I found that every shot is slightly fuzzy, not crisp. This seems the case with this whole camera series - it's not just this camera as it is actually better than many of the same model. I expected more from this high res version of this model. Color is good on Vivid setting, but a bit washed on normal. Settings and menus are simple enough.

I now shoot everything, including movies in 16:9, and although the movies aren't true HD, they are quite good and much better than other compact still cameras I have seen.

The 28 mm equiv isn't really 28 mm compared to an SLR, as it's more like 30 to 32mm. At three quarters to full zoom, you need a tripod for sure if clarity is important. The image stabilization is barely adequate. Also, never try to shoot above 400 iso if the shot is important to you, as grain is quite highly pronounced. I also had a Fuji S9000 prior to this, and the Panasonic isn't a patch on the Fuji overall, especially at night as the flash is quite inadequate.

The only other significant issue is that the thumb menu controls on the back are too soft and always in the way, and I am always catching them. The back should have been better contoured to brace your thumb to steady the camera and also keep it firmly positioned where it should be.

I wouldn't replace this with the same one if it failed. If only Canon made a wide angle zoom compact!

I've only used the camera for a few weeks so I'm still getting to know it. I really like the telephoto and it generally handles well. I do miss a view finder and bright sunshine can be a problem.
