I used to own a Nikon D90 with lots of different lenses but it became too big to carry all of the equipment when I went out. When I decided to change to a compact it was between DSC-ZS3 and the Canon G11 / SX200is / S90. At some point I might go back to one of the Canon's but the wide angle lens of the DMC-ZS3 is fantastic plus it has a good zoom reach. The Canon's don't have a wide enough angle for me yet! The one downside with a compact is the shutter lag so I might take a look at the new micro 4/3rds cameras eventually. For now I am very happy with my purchase.

I bought this as an alternative to my Canon DSL because sometimes if I'm heading out to the city or an event, I don't want to carry the larger camera, lenses, etc. The 12x digital zoom is excellent and the clarity of the pictures you get is incredible for a camera this size. There are more than enough color, white balance and scene options to make your pictures more interesting than the usual "run of the mill" shot.

I did NOT buy this camera for the video option, but I am so happy that it's there. I think I've used that option as much as I've used the photo options. The quality is clear, the stabilization works well, and the sound is pretty good too. The zoom works with the video option and to record you simply press a "record" button on the back of the camera to begin and end. No switching to a separate menu. Great find!

I was looking to replace my old camera, a Canon SD-400 after it got broken. I had been pretty happy with it but the zoom always bugged me. My main focus in my search was a long zoom on a point and shoot style camera. It was either this one or a Canon one. After a bunch of comparisons, it sounded like both were great cameras, the Canon allowed more settings to be adjusted and the Panasonic did a better job at "auto" - letting the camera figure it out.

I rarely found myself shooting in anything other than 'auto' with my old camera so the Panasonic became the obvious choice for snapshots.

Now that I have the Panasonic, it has fulfilled all of my expectations. If you know what the different descriptions for auto shooting do you actually have quite a bit of flexibility on changing settings. "Starry night" gives you a slower shutter speed for example. The iA setting though does a remarkable job at figuring out what you are trying to take a picture of and making the right settings. With my old camera I had learned a bunch of tricks to fool auto into doing what I wanted it to without having to play with manual. I can virtually forget all about that because each time the camera takes the right picture the first try.

The flash seems pretty small but it sure seems to pack a punch. I haven't used it much so far but I've been surprised at it's range and also having very even lighting across the photo.

One complaint I read a bunch about this series of camera is that it is easy to change the mode when you take a picture because the dial is beside the shutter button. That was one of the first things I really played with when I got the camera and for me, I couldn't come up with any likely combination of moves where I could accidentally change it. If I held the camera just right and really focused on pushing the dial button around while taking a picture I could do it but it didn't feel comfortable and there was certainly alot of pressure on my finger, enough to alert any normal person that they were doing something other than just pushing down on the shutter button. I even tried it with gloves on and while a bit easier to do with bulky winter gloves on, it still didn't seem very likely.

Love the point and shoot setting. The zoom is amazing for a camera of this size. Also nice to be able to preset 2 other settings so that you can switch to them with just the spin on the dial instead of sorting through all the options. My only complaint is that the mode dial is so close to the shutter button.

This is a fantastic camera at a fantastic price. The zoom is incredible and at reduced Megapixel size - goes to almost 22X optical. I couldn't be more satisfied with this camera and the 25mm Wide Angle is a huge plus too. Intelligent Auto works very well - and compensates for backlight and other conditions extremely well.I will use my canon for jean pocket and the Panasonic can easily go in a cargo pants pocket of on a belt - its VERY compact for the long zoom it has.[...]

I bought this camera to replace a Canon Powershot S3 IS that suddenly stopped working, after a long productive life. It is superior to the Canon in almost every way. I use the "intelligent autofocus" mode almost all the time, and for the most part it does a great job. The photos have lots of detail and great color. The lens is much more wide-angle than the Canon it replaced, I really appreciate not having to back up and back up to take the shot. The only minus about the auto-mode is it tends to focus on objects that are closer, I want it to center-weight the focusing instead of focusing on an arm or branch at the edge of the frame. That's probably a menu option. The other issues are a proprietary battery (the Canon used AA batteries) that is just ok, and there is a longer delay than I would want between taking shots when using the flash. The HD movie mode doesn't look that special played back on the camera, but on the computer the movies look detailed and with good color even on big screens. Overall, I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a camera that "does the right thing".

We love this camera, and I would buy it again. Both the camera and the video do a great job. In fact, the video quality really surprised us. Our video camera needs to be replaced, but the ZS3 will either delay or cancel that purchase. It's not as compact as my little work point and shoot, but it's not as bulky as some make it out to be. Other's comments on low light, and some image stability in action/movement shots is correct, but they are nits compared to how well this camera does everything else. We shot a bunch of video and our battery held up fine. You won't go wrong with this camera. 4 vs 5 stars? It's likely a 5, but I'm a hard grader.

Sometimes the DSLR is too big to take along. This point and shoot camera is easy to stick into a pocket. The great 12x optical zoom HD movies are the real reason to take it and leave the DSLR at home if space is limited. Also, make sure to have a second battery if the camera is to be used all day. The movie mode tends to use more power. The HD movie format takes up alot less space than older formats though and when zooming it comes into autofocus quickly enough for a device at this price and small size.

We have used it for family photos, web page images, and on our travel trips. It is very fast and responsive. We take lots of pictures of our dog and with most cameras he is long gone before the shutter snaps. This camera works fast, and we can capture his expressions. Easy to cary, easy to use, great functionality.

I got this camera for a Grand Canyon/Zion/Bryce trip, because of the great zoom range -- 25-300mm, in a camera I can carry in my pants pocket. This camera fits, at least in hiking pants or Dockers-style pants or shorts. I smirked quietly at Zion as a bystander with an SLR-shaped camera complained that he couldn't get the "three Patriarchs" (mountains) in his picture. (I had just done so, easily, with the 25mm wide angle on my new "pocket" camera.) And I got close ups of a bighorn ram that was quite a distance away. Another great feature -- the "intelligent auto" setting picks out the best mode to take a picture, and shows you which mode it is selecting. Quite quickly, I fell into the habit of almost always leaving the camera in "I/A" mode and letting it do the thinking. It did an excellent job. When I got this camera, I thought I'd keep my Canon Elph SD1000 to throw in my pocket to take to family functions, etc. Now, no way; the Panasonic will be my only camera. I'm pretty sure my pictures will equal those of lots of folks lugging SLRs around.

Best camera I've ever owned! Excellent zoom for the size of the camera - makes it excellent for portability. Durable construction and Leica lens give you confidence that this is a high quality product. Some reviews said that the dial was flimsy but they have obviously fixed that now, because the dial works great! Intelligent auto does an excellent job picking the scene for you. Starry night mode gets great night shots. Burst mode is awesome! HD video is excellent both the video and audio surpassed expectations. Overall an excellent camera and great value!

I was looking for a camera to replace both my DMC FX-01 which is small and takes good photos, but does not have enough telephoto or capture size and my DMC FZ-20 which takes OK photos and has a great 12x zoom. The DMC ZS3S does all that I was looking for with 12x zoom and at 10.1 it gets great detail. Controls are easy to use and I'm looking forward to learning all of its capabilities.

Bought primarily for trekking/climbing trip to Nepal and have learned to use the camera on several training climbs on Mt. Washington.

The 10 megapixel resolution provides excellent quality even for big enlargements and 12x optical zoom provides great flexibility in framing what you want in each shot.

This camera has more versatility than the full-sized digital SLR that I bought 5 years ago and is about the size of a deck of cards. In addition, and particularly useful on back-country trips where you can go days without the ability to recharge the battery, I familiarized myself with the camera, went through all of the basic mode programming and took and reviewed about 75 shots at max quality on the initial charge. While I am not sure that I will actually get quite as many shots to a charge as the specs suggest, I would not be at all surprised to be able to take about 150.

I bought this camera to replace an older model (TZ3--which I have used for 2 years) because of the enhanced intelligent auto, higher zoom, and HD movie features. From my brief sampling of these features, I am very satisfied with the camera. The movies display well on my 42 inch HD TV (even shot at the lower "H" setting), and the IA mode handles exposure much better that older models. My only complaint--and this probably applies to all cameras with self-closing lens covers--is that, in somewhat damp environments (such as Costa Rican forests), the lens cover tends to stick and not fully open. So, it is important to carry a lens cleaner kit to keep the camera face clean and dry. Also, it is important to purchase a second battery, especially if you intend to take movies. Overall, you will be satisfied with this camera if your intent is to document travel or family events without much tinkering with manual settings.

Just came back from an Alaskan cruise for which I purchased this camera. Could not be happier with the pictures and video. Hooked up to my TV and the quality was as good if not better than Direct TV.

The only negative is that the mode selection dial moves easily when bumped because the indentation mechanism is less definite than on most cameras. Small camera for a having a good zoom. Pictures are very vibrant. Easy to carry on vacation.
