I used this camera to film an entire theater show - this means inside, variable lighting and no flash - the video is absolutely fantastic - I am very impressed. Regular pictures are clear with excellent color and low light pictures are filled in perfectly.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

Good camera overall. High quality images and video. Zoom function is top-notch on this camera.

However, I can buy the same widget from a million different vendors. I'm more impressed w/ Abes of Maine than the cam. Called to order, rep was nice enough, but all business, which I like. Processed me fast, gave me thoughtful peripheral and accessory suggestions, but not pushy. Whole thing took about 3 minutes, and I had my camera in less than 24 hours. Granted, I'm an East Coaster, but still...pretty quick. Nice jobs Abes of Maine, I'll be back.

I take photos as I travel for the Texas Hill Country website, online magazine and Facebook page. I love the small size and great features even though I haven't learned how to use them all to best advantage. The overall quality of pictures is mostly good already, and the panorama photos are spectacular!

I would have liked a longer shutter exposure time to take pictures of the sky at night. I would also have liked a better zoom, however, overall, the camera is great. I love the panoramic feature and the HD video is great. This was one of the choices Kim Komando had on her video site and I would also recommend this to anyone.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

This camera does everything I want and more.
I was looking for a 10X zoom camera that was compact enough to fit in my pants pocket, that worked well in low light, that offered a number of manual functions and that had good all-around reviews. I am very happy to have purchased this camera, as it does all of those and much more.
I was not going to spend as much as $300 when I first started looking at cameras, but the features packed into this camera for slightly over $300 are amazing.
First, picture quality is very good and the zoom is fantastic in such a small package.
Bonus features like the burst (10 photos in less than 2 seconds) has proen extremely useful in capturing those kids and pets who don't always cooperate when you're looking to get their picture. So what if you have to sort through 10 shots to get one keeper. I love the fact that the burst feature can be toggled on and off with the button conveniently located on top of the camera.
Similarly, the video mode can be toggled on and off like that.
The built-in panorama is awesome. No more piecing together shots in another software package. It happens right there as you shoot.
The camera has a cool feature you can set it to, where it takes 3 pictures (almost simultaneously) in low light or night-time conditions, so you can pick the best shot of the 3. A real time saver.
I thought it had so many features I would not use 1/2 of them, but once you learn how to navigate to them, you will find yourself using them more often than not.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

I bought this camera to replace an aging Sony DSC-V1. I had fairly high expectaions but in many outdoor settings this camera performs worse than my 6 year old 5M pixel camera. It often over exposes outdoor shots. The auto mode also is too slow to respond in many cases. The flash also is inferior to other cameras I've used - its too bright whiich generates unattractive shadows on subjects in the foreground.

It does have many bells and whistles and some of them are worthwhile. The high zoon is great though the zoom control is very difficult to operate smoothly.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

I love this camera, great when I cant carry around my other bigger camera, has a 10X Optical Zoom which is great for the size of the camera, Video quality is great to full HD. The camera is fast to turn on which is great for opportunity shots when you cant wait to long for the camera to start-up before the subject is out of frame, also fast in the fact that you can take several pictures in burst mode and here is where I found the only problem with the camera, when you take say 10pics in burst mode it takes a loooooong time to record them, I've tried class 6 and 10 SD cards with no noticeable diference, so I guess it has to do with the internal memory or the camera itself but this is a minor problem in the otherwise great camera. The iSweep panorama pics are easy to take and have a fair resolution and last but not least it takes great pics in low light situations. I would fully recomend it to anyone.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

I've had this camera for a few weeks now and so far, I love it! I took it to New York City this past week and it worked well. It takes excellent low-light pictures and I love the 10x optical zoom. For me, the battery life is better than I had expected but still not great.

My one gripe so far is that my lens cover doesn't close all the way. I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I was considering sending it in under warranty to see what they can do about it.

Other than that, it's a great camera that I would recommend to anyone!

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

I really like this camera. It does many things that digital compact cameras simply cannot do (although many manufacturers are copying the features of the Sony HX5 in order to be competitive. However, I think that Sony and many camera review sites have really "over sold" it. I mean, yes, it take good low light pictures but it is not great--not near great quality that you would get from a much more expensive and bulky DSLR (I know the comparison is unfair due to how different these two types of cameras are and the price difference). The CMOS Exmor technology is good but DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE TOO MUCH! The photo quality is marginally better than higher ISO photos due to the less noise produced by the Exmor sensor. However, to pull this off the image comes out I think "softer". I personally like sharper images but the images from the Sony is certainly acceptable.

Other features such as GPS is really a good selling point and that was the deciding factor for me. I know the Panasonic ZS7/TZ10 also has GPS but it is not as good in low light. Also I have seen a side-by-side comparison of the video of the Panasonic and I feel it looks better than the Sony. The Sony's video quality is good indoors and outdoors but not great. Don't expect HD pro video quality such as those from a good quality expensive video camera and you won't be disappointed.

I definitely suggest you buy extra batteries and higher capacity memory card (at least 16gb) especially if you using the GPS a lot and shooting a lot of video which eats of memory.

Abe's of Maine did give me a good price on the camera and other accessories I got such as an extra battery and a Sony memory 16 gb card.

Overall, I am happy with the camera although my initial expectations (now I know) were perhaps a little unreasonable due to the publicity and "hype" this camera received. If you need a compact camera to take low light pictures without flash and if you need GPS then buy the Sony HX5 you will be happy with the results just don't expect DSLR results.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

The camera worked much as I expected and hoped. I wanted a telephoto camera that was small and light. In particular I like to carry the camera in the back pocket of my bike jersey so I can whip it out without taking it out of a case and going thru a long set up. The intelligent setting makes it easy to use in situations where you don't want to fumble around with setting. The 10x optical zoom provided an additional capability I didn't have in previous cameras. The low level light shooting was good. Be sure to note exactly what comes with the camera you order. You need an external charger since you can't charge the battery in the camera. It also is helpful to have a second battery because it requires special lithium batteries and you don't want to wait for a charge. Also you need a camera card. An 8 gig card was fine for me. Overall I am satisfied, although I think it is pricey.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

Perfect addition to my camera arsenal. I thought the Nikon S8000 was the end all for Point and Shoots for me, but now that camera belongs to my daughter.
Still not as versatile as my DSLR but much easier to carry. Fits in my pocket and has HD video!
Bust mode is crazy fast! 10fps and I can delete what I don't want. Writing to card after recording video takes a bit but not a deal breaker.
Auto mode takes the guess work out.
Not too well in dimly lit areas but neither was my Nikon or other Sony.
Could've used a more powerful zoom, but I gave up a 14x zoom to keep this unit.
Easy to hold and shoot with one hand.
I'm a tech geek and this one surprisingly met all my expectations.
Not the cheapest unit out there but well worth it for me.
I did all the research and even own a competitor's model and I still like the HX-5 better.
Screen could've been brighter, writing to memory stick will not break any speed records and it flat out is horrible in low light situations.
I hope this review helps!

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

This is a great camera! I got this to replace my old Sony DSC-H10 since it got lost. My old Sony was simply too bulky, though had great features such as 10x zoom. I'm no pro photographer, but I like simple cameras that have intuitive, easy to use features, and the HX5V is that product! It features 10x zoom and it 1/2 the size as my old Sony! I love the video recording as well because this camera records in HD and up to 29 minutes per video! I don't think I'll need to ever buy a camcorder. I've already used it outdoors and I absolutely love the panorama feature. The device has a fast start-up and short lag between photos. There's also a feature where it takes 2 photos back to back so you can always have a great picture of somebody in case they happened to have been blinking or 1/2 way through their smile; you can toggle that feature on/off.

The only complaints I have are that the body feels slightly cheap relative to the price but I can reason with that because the camera is also very light, so it's a good trade-off in ways. Don't get it twisted, the camera is not flimsy by any means. Also the images are sometimes "soft". It's not often, but the images aren't as sharp as I've seen with my old Sony, but it depends on the lighting situation and how fast you shoot the photo I suppose.

Overall, GREAT product for the price; highly recommended!

This is a great camera! I took it with me on vacation and was extremely pleased at all of the features it has! Very easy to use, great zoom, the only not so great thing about it so far is the tutorial CD which is not really a tutorial...I was expecting something different from it, still trying to figure it out. But overall, very pleased with this product!

I'm very happy with this camera.
It works as advertised. The 1080i video
looks great on my HDTV.I take my camera in the woods when mountain biking and with the 10 pics per second burst mode, I never miss a shot :)
I love that you can watch the videos in slow motion right on the camera...The zoom is great and the panoramic pics are very cool too...
Not much to complain about from me..
It does do better in low light than my DSC-V1
but don't expect miracles.
The video in SD is very much improved over my DSC-V1 as well....

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

Though it was somewhat more than I'd intended to spend for a point-and-shoot, I chose the DSC-HX5V for its 10X optical zoom, excellent wide angle, large, bright display, and CMOS detector -- also had used Sony's in the past and was accustomed to the interface. I have not regretted the extra dollars. The camera doesn't offer a lot of manual control, but the automatic settings produce exemplary pictures. The "Easy" and "Intelligent Automatic" settings allow even someone with little aptitude with a camera to take good shots. The low-light performance is superb, and even better when using the preset for that purpose. I thought the "Intelligent Sweep Panorama" was clever but not something I'd use -- but it works so well and so effortlessly and produces such interesting results that I now consider it one of the camera's outstanding features. I've only used the DSC-HX5V for about 6 weeks, and may still discover some negatives -- but so far I have nothing but good to say about the camera.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V/B 10.2 MP Digital Camera- Black:

Takes great pics, esp. low light. And the panorama shots are fun as well. Battery life only issue, not even close to 200 shots with a Sony battery. I took a 2nd to Europe, but had to limp along saving battery life. Would've shot several hundred more but that would have taken 3 or 4 more batteries.

The scene selection works great. No comment on the movie aspect as I didn't try it.

Overall, highly recommended. (Just buy a lot of batteries.)

Mode madness, too many modes. Documentation lacking detail. Images lack fine detail - too much noise filtering. Red saturation on Macro shots. Ridiculous computer interface cable (should use USB or Firewire)! Needs firmware update to fix noise filtering.

Great panorama. Good low light. Low lag. Uses SD or Memory stick.

As a casual photographer, I can definitely recommend this camera. Once one dials into the intelligent mode, the camera does a decent job recognizing the appropriate scenes for optimal picture quality. All in all, a great casual camera that performs well under most circumstances.
