Comments about GARMIN Nuvi 500 GPS Navigation System:

First I want to quailify that I called Garmin Support and asked questions about the way this unit was to be used and the 500 was the best choice for me.

This is my 3rd GPS. I have one handheld Quest2 and one mounted on my motorcyce (Steetpilot 2730).

The only lacking part of this unit and seems to be the same for all new units from Garmin is that I can not use MapSource to create a route and transfer it to the GPS.

This unit is far and away the best of the 3 units and that should go without saying because it is the newest of the 3. It obtains satelites quickly and recalulates your route extremely fast in case you miss your turn. I am using this unit as both a street routin unit and a handheld for geocaching. Specs say battery life is 8 hours but I find it is more like 6. Still not bad when you can cache in one location and hook it up the to car charge on the way to the next location.

Comments about GARMIN Nuvi 500 GPS Navigation System:

Got this unit as a combo device for car and hiking as it came with both street and topo maps. Was disapointed, however, that topo, didn't have trails in major places like Yellowstone so had to buy US Topo 24k National Parks [...]. US Topo 24k didn't seem to recognize the device properly but in the end the maps seemed to load and I now have trail detail for hiking.
