The JSX Mini Colossal is a Class A monster in a nice, little box. It has what I always wished a small vintage amp would have: a pure, wide-open sound, classic tremolo, buffered effects loop, a unique power level attenuator, and a recording output that actually sounds like the the amp.

Comments about Peavey JSX MINI COLOSSAL - Combo Guitar Amp:

I'm an electric guitarist in a folk-infused indie rock band, playing mostly smaller gigs where the volume needs to be kept manageable. I like my sound to be mostly clean but on the verge of breaking up, using a boost pedal to make my lead tones pop out in the mix. With my other tube amp, I can never reach the sweet spot live because I get too loud. The JSX Mini Colossal solves this, and the Class-A design has added a whole new level of dynamics that makes it hard to look back; using the boost pedal, my leads now sound creamier, fatter, and more alive than with any other amp I've used!

Using the speaker simulating direct-out, I can dial in the sound I like and then amplify it using the PA system. This is a FANTASTIC feature, because it allows me to be louder when I need to be. But moreso, it makes it super easy to balance my volume with the members of the band being run through the PA - no more level issues, and it sounds great!

Of course, the amp is not without its drawbacks. While the single tone knob makes it easy to find a good sound, it is only a single tone knob - Bass, Mid, and Treble controls would have been preferable. It also doesn't have the most clean headroom (however, you don't buy a 5W tube amp to get loud AND clean, do you?) Lastly, although the tremolo sounds great, a reverb probably would have served my needs better.

All in all, I LOVE this little amp! It sounds great, is easy to take with me and is completely responsive to the way I play. To date one of my favorite pieces of gear!
