Comments about Vox DA20 GUITAR AMP - 20 Watt 2X8 Combo:
I recently sold a '66 Fender Princeton Reverb amp because it was not
living up to my present-day situations and expectations, even after
trying to enhance the sounds I was able to get with a Line-6 pod.
Rather than risk "devaluing" the Fender by replacing vital elements
such as capacitors and rewiring it, I simply used the "big money" I
got for what I considered to be an ailing "vintage" amp to purchase my
new VOX DA20 amplifier, PLUS a brand new Gibson Les Paul guitar!!!
Don't get me wrong, many musicians swear by these old Fender amps, but
I remained disillusioned with it for many years and decided that I was
ready for a change! I had been searching websites and reading reviews
until I came across the description of the new line of VOX digital
amps. I was VERY impressed by what I read in the manufacturer's
description, but what really blew me away were the musician's points
of view. They all compared the 20 watt DA20 with the original amp in
this line - the VOX DA5. Look anywhere and you will see rave upon
rave about this groundbreaking 5 watt amp. Not only were the VOX DA5
& the 10 watt version DA10 amps desirable for their 11 differing style
settings as well as an ADDITONAL 11 completely different effects
settings, they are completely PORTABLE - meaning the capacity to be
wirelessly battery operated! You could finally tote the amp to the
park or the beach with no hassle at all! And by the way they are
value priced, you really wouldn't have all the worry and concern that
taking your "vintage" amp to the beach would entail. My old Fender
was only 15 watts with a SINGLE 10" speaker, whereas the VOX DA20 has
20 watts and TWO 8" speakers! There is a power select switch that
enables the amp to use the maximum plugged-in power, 1.5 watts to
overdrive, and .05 watts while only consuming battery power.
While in my opinion the amp is sufficently loud to play plugged-in at
full power for small gigs, (especially when miked through a PA system
and monitors), it is also surprisingly loud enough to handle most ANY
other situation with ease.
I really like the classic VOX vintage style cabinet and "chicken-head"
control knobs. The sounds, tones, and effects blending this amp
eminates are even that much more enhanced when I use my old Line-6
pod!
If that weren't enough, the amp has master volume, tone, and gain
controls, as well as seperate microphone and AUX inputs! If you
choose, you can hook your I-POD device to the AUX-IN, and your tape-
recorder and/or mixer to LINE/PHONE out!
The only things I can think of that are not so great about this
product is the fact that it is neither vintage nor tube-operated,
which would have needlessly jacked its price up exponentially.
So I guess "it can't be so bad."
I believe that those of us on the cutting edge would prefer to play in
the here and NOW rather than be confined by an amp's estimated vintage
worth or extrememly limited portability!
