Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Macro Lens:

Amazing lens, well worth the price. Since it can focus very close for macro shots, you need to use the focus limiter and sometimes set the focus distance manually, or it hunts. But otherwise the results are amazing.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Macro Lens:

Sharp clear images. Being able to use this because of the IS when out and about was the man reason why I chose it. It works very well for handheld shots where there is no other way to support it.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Macro Lens:

I have enjoyed macro shooting for some time (having used the ef-s 60, 100 (non-L) and 180L in the past.

While each of those lenses has specific advantages and disadvantages, I found the 100mm focal length to be perfect in terms of working distance and portability for the following reasons:

With 60mm you are so close to achieve 1:1 magnification that spiders can lite rally nock on the front element to say hello).

With 180mm while you do have a much greater working distance, the lens is as large and bulky as a 70-200. Therefore unless I was specifically planning to shoot macro, I would not take the 180 with me at all.

The 100mm focal length provides a best of both worlds compromise, and retains a small enough form factor to remain lightweight and hand-holdable.

My specific praise for the new L incarnation of this lens is for the following reasons:

Although most macro shooters have a lighting rig, or rail focus setup I enjoy natural lighting, and multi-legged subjects that don't exactly like to stay still to pose. While the 100L's IS system (or any IS system for that matter) will not freeze action, it does an excellent job at reducing camera shake in low light situations. I find that I have many more keepers with this than I did the non L version.

Furthermore, this lens is built much more solidly than the non-L version. It has a respectable size and weight which I find makes it easy to handhold. The construction did not "feel" as solid as other L lenses, but I believe the quality is still there.

I have read other reviews that call this Canon's most fun-per-dollar lens and I have to agree. It is excellent for Macro (obviously) but it can be an ideal portrait lens as well. Furthermore, the 2.8 aperture can help push this lens into service for sports if needed also (I have seen some photographers work shooting indoor volleyball with this lens that blew me away).

for this dollar amount to not get a twin light attachment without buying another ring from canon us almost unforgiveable. the 180 lens has an adaptor and it fits right up to the 65 macro, and the old 100 mm. why not this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Macro Lens:

AS an 84 year old photographer with Parkinsons Syndrome,I found this lens with its new antishake performance superb. I have taken hand held macro shots of flowers outdoors and they ARE in sharp focus. I cannot use a tripod as it is too heavy to carry so you can appreciate what this lens means to me. I am planning to use my camera more as the photographic world has reopened to me because of this lens.

I have few canon lenses for my Canon 5D Mark II camera. this is my first macro lens. i love to take photos of everything everywhere. I used primarly lens that came with my camera for general photo taking. Ever since I got my zoom lens I prefer using this one instead. You cannot zoom in or out but you can just take amazing photos with this lens. I am simply loving this lens.

Prior to this I owned the 100mm f2.8 non L IS lens. I was happy with that lens as well but this one is even better. Sharper wide open and the IS is super helpful for all the handheld shots I take.
