Comments about Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM Lens:

If you're going to be doing any kind of close up photography toss in a circular polarizing filter or at the very least a UV. It will save you from tons of headaches form the reflected light when shooting up close. Also the filter will act as a barrier against possible dust particles into the lens. This helps because in macro photography EVERYTHING shows up.

Comments about Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM Lens:

This lens received good reviews everywhere I looked, and they were justified. I'm impressed with it's close focus ability, and the sharpness of the resulting pictures. The lens is a bit on the heavy side, so a hand grip strap for the camera is probably a good idea if you're going to consistently use this lens.

Comments about Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM Lens:

Overall this is a very good lens. There are no error messages with a Cannon camera. The auto focus is quick where it works, but that can be an issue with small subjects like insects. I frequerntly have to turn off the auto focus in that case. My Eos XSi is sometimes off on the exposure with this lens, especially if the flash is needed. It is also heavier than other lenses in its class.

I have gotten a lot of good photos with this lens, & it is definietly better than the 100mm Tokina macro lens that preceeded it. I would buy it again.

Comments about Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM Lens:

This lens is amazing. but as with other reviews it can be somewhat slow and without image stablization you really need a tripod or something to steady yourself. I prefer manual focus anyways, so the IS is not a huge issue. AF is not as slow as others say but it can be if there is alot of movement, again tripod really is needed. The pictures are crisp and I really have no complaints. If you want a Macro lens this is it.

Comments about Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM Lens:

This is a wonderful lens. Sharp and fast. Even great as a portrait lens in a pinch. I end up taking most of my photos handheld, but it's even better on a tripod. My only complaint is that it can have trouble focusing in low light. If it gets too frustrating, I just switch it into MF and take the shot that way.

Great for taking close-ups; flowers; insects, anything requiring microscopic analysis. I considered this lens versus the 60mm canon macro and the more expensive L series lens. I couldn't be happier with the quality of the lens and the pictures. Price / quality can't be beat. Would do it again.

Comments about Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I have this lens and the renowned Canon EF 135 f2 lens. Both are incredibly sharp, and the 100mm has the added benefit of great macro photography.

Last Sunday, I was shooting pictures at the local university, took a picture of a young lady a good 100 yards away with this lens on a Rebel XSi, and was able to recover a sharp, perfectly exposed, beautifully saturated 1:1 image of her in Adobe Lightroom 2.0. It is breathtaking what this lens will do with a good camera.

I look forward to using this lens a lot in the future.

Comments about Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro USM Lens:

the one quality this lens has, which most reviews overlook are the flat field optics. I copy paintings and artwork. All the small format lenses I have ever used for this had shortcomings and that is why until recently, this type of work (along with architecture) was almost entirely the domain of large format (4x5 and 8x10). This is a welcomed improvement in my work.
I have also noticed some negative reviews due to the slow focus, but if any of you ever did macro photography the old way, you would not be complaining. This is a specialized lens and should be treated as such. The same goes for the supposed lack of ruggedness. This is a wonderful lens all around. If you shoot outdoors, no matter what lens you use, you need to use a good protective covering.

I gave "only" 4 stars because there's the EF 180mm 3.5L Macro Lens. But if think that this one is only for professional photographs. I'm very happy about this lens. If you will be not very satisfied about the macro pictures you buy cheaply some extension tubes.
