Have not had time to use all that much, but the pictures I have taken so far are incredible. The color and detail blows away all my other lenses.
Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
I gave this lens a good run at the MLK rally at the state capital recently and came away with some incredible shots in a densely crowded setting. I like that people aren't as reactive to the lens allowing one to capture natural states and expressions.

Just got this lens for Christmas and the construction is rock solid. Sure it is heavy, but what do you expect with a quality lens! I carried it all day at the zoo with no issues at all. Pictures are very sharp and the push pull system is real smooth to use.

Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
This lens is all it is made out to be. I have used it a short period of time and the quality of the shots is clearly a cut above anything else I have been using. You need to learn how to use it to get the best shots, e.g., focus in lower light conditions. It's not simple a "point and shoot" lens, but when you learn how to set the right shutter speed, f/Stop, ISO, etc., you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
My primary use for the camera is wildlife photos at long distance. I can take a deer/tuakey photo at 150 yards, crop it and enhance it via Photoshop and it looks like I took the photo at 10-15 yards. Another impressive result is that I can take a bird photo in flight and its wings seem to stand still.

Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
This lens is a bit heavy but that is understandable for such a well built quality lens that would usually be mounted on a tripod or monopod. The IS is so effective that I have shot bird pics at 400mm hand held. A great lens for well-lite subjects. Of course, a faster lens would cost substantially more.

Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
I use the lens for sports action while my grandsons play flag football & soccer, I also film granddaughters competing in gymnastics and dancing. The lens is easy to use and to interchange with other lenses on my Rebel XTI.
I get great results using a tripod. I haven't found any negative problems yet. I have also tried handheld pictures. I wish I had purchased this lens prior to our Alaska trip last summer.

Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
I am not actually the user of this fantastic lens. It was purchased as a gift for my father for Christmas. Was he ever surprised! His surprise was nothing compared to the incredible pictures he is now taking, with the aid of the 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS lens. The only complaint he has is that my brother also likes the lens and now he has to share. :-)

Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
I use this mostly for wildlife, birds, and other large animals... for birds, i would recommend getting a 1.4x extender... i also occasionally use this for sports... it's a nice lens... L quality build... i've taken it to the jungle numerous times, and has yet to show any signs of wear and tear... the "dust pump" issue doesn't really exist... although, i haven't really tested this to it's limits (like pumping it a bunch of times in a sandy windy beach). just use your common sense, wrap a towel around it if you need to zoom a lot in a dusty environment, and you'll be fine...
the good thing about this lens... is the focal range... the build, L quality optics... Image Stabilizer... USM... and the hood does a good job, since it's not a petal style hood, it provides better flare control... the price and retention of value are also good things to keep in mind... excellent zoom lens for the long end... and for an L lens, it's not very expensive...
the bad... it's heavy, but hand-holdable, especially with IS... cheap for an L lens, but still well above $1000. not much to complain about really...
just wanted to own an L-series lens with lots of zoom power... this fit the bill... and the price was right (compared to other L lenses)... so i bought it. no complaints so far.

Comments about Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L USM IS Lens:
This lens was primarily purchased for my wife to take photos of birds that feed on our backyard feeders. She uses the lens on Canon EOS Rebel Xsi and Xti and Canon EOS 50D. She is a very small person and the camera and lens are very heavy for her, but she takes really great photos with it. She prefers hand holding the camera and lens so she can focus quickly on multiple bird feeders and ground locations where the large variety of birds are feeding. She really enjoys the lens with its IS feature. I will also use the lens for photographing soccer and football played by our grandson.
I like the weight, rugged construction, high quality, the IS feature (primary reason for this purchase in addition to its focal lengths), and its beauty.
