I love this lens! I wish I could afford the f1.2 however, student loans need to be paid.
The only beef I have on this lens is in low light and trying to get a good action shot at f1.4-f2.8 can get a bit tricky. The auto-focus has a hard time finding it's mark. I don't know if the better model would help with that or not.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.4 USM Lens:

I bought this lens after considering the 50mm f/1.8 II. After reading the online reviews, I decided to go with this model because of the metal mounting ring, full-time manual focusing, and improved bokeh.

I'll admit I'm a novice right now, and this is my first fast prime. But so far I'm really liking the results. The images produced look really good, and the bokeh is great. Also, the small size and weight makes for a really compact and light setup.

The only downside so far, and it's only a slight one, is that the images are a bit soft up until about f/2.0 or so. The images at full aperture are still really good, they could just be sharper. Admittedly, I probably wouldn't even notice unless I'm zooming in or doing some substantial cropping.

I've read that some people have had problems with the focusing breaking after a year or so. I've only had it a month or two and have had no problems. Fingers crossed that I don't have the same problem, because right now, I'm really enjoying this lens.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.4 USM Lens:

This lens will easily give good depth of field and without the flash so you can get beautiful shots in nice natural lighting. My only nitpic is that when teamed up with my Rebel T2i, the results aren't always exactly as sharply focused as the Rebel's lcd would lead me to believe. Actually, the problem is more likely with the relatively small lcd on the Rebel which seems to show everything as being in focus on review of the pics/videos. But when I later review the pics/videos on larger screens, like my computer or TV, I immediatley notice that the focus is often off. I've got to learn to look very closely at the lcd to make sure the shots are really in focus. This is my first higher-end lens and it is costly to me (I've owned several nice P&S cameras that were less costly than this lens). Though expensive compared to P&S cameras, it has made getting amazing shots a whole lot easier and is well worth the investment as long as it doesn't break. My days of carefree camera ownership are over now that I've gone semi-professional but I'm still waiting for a P&S that can do as much as this camera/lens combo. I've even bought a lens case for this beauty but dread carrying this fairly heavy anchor around my neck. Aw, the price of good pics!

I mostly shoot indoors and in low light conditions. This lens is great for that. The build quality is pretty solid and much better compared to the Canon 50mm 1.8 II. The mount is metal and not plastic. This is definitely a lens to get.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.4 USM Lens:

For it's price point, this is an excellent lens. My first prime, I had to get used to shallow dof at low apertures. It consistently produces sharp results, though on occasion the focus isn't accurate. It's fast (well, much faster than my zooms) so low light photos look great. It's not a durable lens by any stretch, but then again you're not paying for durability.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.4 USM Lens:

This is a great low-light fixed focal prime lens, approx. equivalent to the 85mm on my 1.6x crop sensor Canon 7D. I am used to L series lenses, so this one doesn't rank as well in the build quality. The focus ring has a nice feel, although I wish it had a bit more tension. Unless sunlight is hitting the top of the lens it is hard to make out the focus distance in feet. Aside from these cons, the out of focus blur (bokeh) is acceptable but nowhere near as buttery as on my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Great for portraits and low-light photography as this lens can go as wide as f/1.4. This lens is essential for anyone who can't afford a L series semi-telephoto prime (on 1.6x crop). Although the 85mm f/1.8 does better in lens reviews, I picked this lens because it is not as telephoto and I can let in a bit more light. Great addition to my 17-40mm f/4 L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Eventually I may upgrade to the 16-35mm f/2.8L and 24-70 f/2.8L but I can imagine this lens staying with me for quite some time until I can afford the 50mm f/1.2L or the legendary 50mm f/1L.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.4 USM Lens:

I bought this lens because it is a fast lens that is small and light. Its size is great for when I go snowboarding or for just bumping around the back country when you want a high quality lens without the bulk. The fact that its a prime forces you to be more involved with composing pictures, which is good. It takes excellent portraits with nice color and background blur. It's also been great for candid shots indoors of my family's school and church activities. I definitely recommend it - it's a fun lens to have.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.4 USM Lens:

Recently purchased the EOS 50D with the 18-200mm lens kit. I bought the 50mm f1.4 as a second lens, and glad I did. It is very fast and great in low light conditions and perfect for portraits. No zoom, but then again, that's not why you buy a standard lens. You just have to use your feet a little bit more. Optical quality is great and focus is fast. Build quality is much better than the f1.8 and definitely worth the extra $$$ if you can afford it. The reduction in weight and size is a nice change compared to the 18-200mm lens kit. Bottom line, definitely a lens any photographer should have in the "glass" collection ... you'll use it more than you think.

Brings out the best of my Rebel XS. A whole new level of color depth and luminosity above the kit lens. The 50mm prime field of view reminds me of my film camera from 20 years ago and I see the environment with a renewed intuitive sense of framing. Coupled with a cropped sensor, this lens works beautifully for interior existing light portraits. Be careful, though; focusing at large apertures takes practice.

With great power comes great responsibility. This lens has tons of options with the wonderful 1.4 max aperture. However it takes a while to get used to. Overall, I like this lens a lot. It's a bit close because of the crop factor (on a Canon Xti), but I enjoy how easy it is to take photos in low light.

I was excited to finally receive my 50mm f1.4 lens and it to great use right away. I photographed my friend's house party and found it was an excellent low-light lens and all of my portraits came out beautifully. The autofocus was fast and accurate and the pictures are really sharp. The only downsides I would say is that it doesn't really perform too well at F1.4, but it does magnificentally everywhere else.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.4 USM Lens:

I looking to finally upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens for my 400D/XTi. Although i can't call a fixed/prime lens an upgrade to a zoom, its incredible and has been staying on my body for approx 80% of use.I wanted to originally get the 24-70L lens to go with my f/4 70-200 but i put that off to instead get a wonderful, relatively-cheap low-light lens. The first time i put the lens on, it was astonishing what i was now able to do - i could hardly believe the exposure times my camera using! 'Available light photography' is beautiful and fits the mood of the situation much more than flash where harsh colors are extremely common.I looked around for many weeks to find good lenses other than the f/1.4 which i have now. The 1.8 seems a bit too cheap and the 1.2 is way over my head but 300 dollars is quite alright for an object i will (hopefully) have for the rest of my life... While i was looking to buy the lens after christmas, the price kept rising until i decided to pull the trigger at [$] before it went any higher. It has increased steeply since - Canon has issued a wide product price increase :-( While the lens has a few weak spots like its autofocus and being soft at 1.4 (which is impossible to avoid unless u spend 1500+ dollars), the amazing portrait and general uses make stunning, eye-poping pictures. Another nice thing about the lens is the very narrow DoF... good stuff!!!Do yourself the favor and get it!Lastly - HAVE FUN AND MAKE MEMORIES!!

I did a lot of research before purchasing this lens. I own a variety of lenses and was looking for a solid low light portrait lens. I bought the 50mm 1.4 because of its weight, low light capabilities and fast crystal clear focus. I really like the fact that it is easy to switch from auto to manual since the control is so close to the camera body.

The clarity is prime and zoom is not an issue. This lens is a winner. I own L series glass but I would never leave home without this gem.

I love this lense. It is light weight, good in low light and good bokeh. I recommend to spend more money buying this lense than the cheaper version of 50mm/f1.8 The con about the lense is the zoom. I think I used to with regular lense/digital camera that you just stand there and you can zoom in and zoom out, but with this lense you have move closer or further from the object to setup the picture.
