Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

I absolutely love this lens for the price. When I first bought it I wasn't super fond of it until I learned how to use it. It is a great lens that every photographer should have in their bag, and perhaps the only lens. What I love about my prime is the combination of super limited depth of fields when shooting wide open and the ridiculously awesome sharpness. I hardly ever shoot above 800ISO if I can help it, and this lens makes that entirely feasible. I also hardly ever have to adjust my photos to be brighter--it shoots very well in low-light conditions.

The cons are that the autofocusing mechanism is very loud, you can't focus at macro lengths (you have to be at least 2 feet away from your focusing point). Otherwise, it's awesome.

Conclusion: if you can swing it, I'd go ahead and pick up the $400 version. However, if you're dying to have a new lens you'll fall in love with this one.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

I was looking for a lens that would give me great portraits and insane bokeh, this is it.

I was also looking for something cheap -- and this is it by a long shot. I never feel I have to overly protect the lens, this is thee lens I would bring anyplace "dangerous." If it breaks, oops, get a new one for $80-90 and toss it.

But the cheapness is also the biggest downside. I feel one good drop would smash this thing to pieces, or at least break the mount in twain.

But for a fairly new DSLR photographer, this is the first fixed lens to get for sure. Wild depth of focus and gorgeous bokeh effects are this lens' bread and butter.

This camera also gets you into the action of taking a picture. Instead of standing back and hoping zoom will fill the gap, I can get right up close; which I think makes for much more personal shots.

I use it for any shot in which I want one focal point: portraits, sports (bocce ball counts), events and nature detail shots.

Sure, I would take a metal mount, a smaller F-stop and sturdy casing. But then I'd be afraid to take my $700 lens out of the box.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

For <[$] you can't get better image quality. Super sharp. A useful focal length for indoor portraits. I bought it as a cheap way to experiment with a fast lens and I haven't been disappointed. F/1.8 is great, the auto focus works well. Not as fast and accurate as a more expensive Canon USM lens but totally acceptable to me.Bokeh is strong, but not as smooth as more expensive lenses. Plastic construction is nice because its light but I wonder about the durability. But at [$] who cares?Bottom line: This will never be a pro lens but what a great lens for a beginner to start with.

In the days of film I hated 50mm lenses - neither wide nor long enough. But as a 75-80mm digital equivalent it becomes a fast, lightweight portrait/general use optic. It is light, and very sharp at the middle apertures.
The bokeh is not great, but at the price...? Most people ignore the fixed 50mm, but those who try it are usually delighted.

From the first time I used the "nifty fifty" lens, I knew I had made a great addition to my newly acquired camera, Canon T2i. The best photos were macros shot outdoors, and indoor portraits. I also did a number of indoor "landscapes" using wine bottles, glass, & accessories for some friend's wine shop newsletter, and they turned out terrific! For the very reasonable price, you simply can not go wrong. Yes, I would recommend this lens to a friend.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

I'll admit that I'm a casual photographer. I read up on my hobbies though, and you can believe the reviews that you've seen around the web for this lens. It's great for low light. It's great outdoors in natural light also.If you read some of the technical details that sound like cons, take into account what actually matters to you. A professional photographer may care that his bokeh points look elongated under 100% crop because there's only 5 blades in the iris. And he'll spend 100s of dollars more to get those perfect circles. But when you're looking for snapshots that focus on your kid's face, do you really care about the shape of the points of light in the blurry background? I'm not saying that those things aren't relevant, I'm just asking you to consider if they're relevant to you.For [$] bucks, you can hardly beat this lens. If you're shooting at the extreme (1.8), then you really have to pay attention to which point is focused for portraiture (try to go for the eyes) because if the subject's nose or cheek is in focus, everything else won't be with frame-filling shots.Take a look at my pictures for examples that you can obtain. All are natural light, un-retouched, random shots while I was playing with my kids using a T2i. And I repeat, I am not a photographer, I just graduated from point-and-shoots.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

With a price tag of less than $100 this is Canon's lowest price prime lens. If you're just getting started, get this lens. The quick f/1.8 aperture makes this an ideal indoor lens. This lens is constructed of plastic, but seems durable, is very light weight, and very basic. There is no distance meter and barely a focusing ring at the front of the lens. Auto focus is fairly quick in good light with still subjects. For novice photographers that don't want to drop three hundred plus dollars for a prime lens this is great option.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

This is a great lens for somebody who is just starting out in photography such as myself. I always do tons of research before I ever buy any product. I did a lot of research on this lens and I'm happy to say that I'm very pleased with the way my photos have turned out. I was taking some test shots with this lens (the day I got it in the mail) and my new T2i of an old classic 8mm camera and forgot to delete them off of my SD card.
About 3 weeks later I went to a classic car show and took some pictures with the kit lens (18-55mm). My friend and his wife wanted to see the pictures I took at the show, as he and his wife were looking at the photos of the classic cars they happen to see the photos I took with the 50mm lens and thought they were such great photos. I had forgot that they were even on my SD card and considered them "junk" photos since I was just testing the lens the day that I got it. So basically what I'm saying is this lens can make you look like you know what your doing when you really don't

I'd been stuck in the land of he kit lens, then followed suggestions to try something sharper and faster. This lens has motivated me to dig a little deeper into photography, and push myself to keep learning more. I love its low light capabilties. I haven't purchased an external flash as of yet, and the internal pop-up on my SLR is just too harsh. I love the ability to capture available light without camera shake.

I really enjoy the depth of focus this lens can offer especially for the cost considering the price jumps in lenses that offer even lower F-stops. It also creates lovely bokeh and really puts your subject into central focus. It's super small and lightweight too. Definitely worth the money. I am glad I made the purchase.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

I'm just a casual photographer, but my awesome husband gave me my first DSLR as a gift last year, but I was pretty much dissatisfied with the lens that it came with. Consequently, I used the camera very little because it just didn't give me the results that I wanted. Since getting this lens, however, I've been SO very happy. I take it with me to all family and friend functions and have captured shots that I will cherish forever. I just love it and for this price, I cannot find any faults with it.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

I had been wanting to get this lens for quite some time and decided to take the plunge. The biggest incentive is the price. Most of the new or recent camera lenses that are available are very expensive if you are not a professional or someone planning to become a professional. There are other newer 50mm lens that begin at $300+, which is still fairly expensive for my casual use.As far as the picture quality goes, I think they come out very sharp. The pictures come out really nice when using the correct settings, if you are shooting manual mode of course. Its also superb for taking portrait frames. I am not a professional so I would suggest taking this recommendation with a grain of salt but overall the picture quality is fantastic.I am sure I am not the first one to say this nor the last one but the build quality is really cheap. Its plastic. If you're looking for a superior build quality then this lens is NOT for you.So to some it all up, this is a bargain lens that has a great picture quality for those who don't want to spend a fortune on more expensive lens.

This was my first lens upgrade besides the kit lens for my canon rebel T1i. This takes amazing portraits with crisp focus. I have used it several times and definitely think it's a must have for all photographers. The only downside is that there's no zoom (duhh.. it's a prime lens) and that since it's a 50mm lens, you have to be pretty far away to capture a wide angle crop. Test out with your kit lens first to make sure you're ok with always having a 50mm lens attached.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

This lens is a bit fragile, and cheaply constructed, which is why the price is so low. However, it takes excellent photos, with good sharpness throughout. The shots I took of my two boys, 2 and 4, playing and swinging in the backyard were stunning! Razor sharp focus on their faces, and the background totally blurry. Action shots on the swings were perfect, crisply frozen in time, once I picked a spot to focus on, and then waited for them to swing into it. Excellent lens for the money if you're willing, like me, to baby it and not smack it around much.

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

This lens is a good alternative to the 70-200 L for indoor sports, particulary basketball and it works well indoors at f/2.8. It doesn't focus as fast as the 70-200 and can take some practice to lock on to a subject to set up for an action shot, but once you get the hang of this lens it will produce consistent quality shots.

You won't find anything close to the price of this lens based on value and results. On an XSI capturing portraits, I just love this lens. 80% of the time I need to go to Photo Shop to smooth sharp features. Some of my client's requested I not show some "undesired" features based on the capability of this lens (such as a zit - sorry to be so specific.) There is absolutely no reason not to have this lens in your kit if you own a canon camera - based both on price and capability. At the time of purchase, Abe's pricing couldn't be beat. Highly recommend both the lens and Abe's.

I have used it only a few times, it seemed a bit lightly constructed, but it is a great buy for a low light lens and casual user. It takes clear pictures and many indoor low light shots without flash for special effects. I am delighted with it's capabilities at a great price. It came in a small box with a bubble wrap pouch bag which I keep it in to protect it while not in use as the lens has a lite plastic housing. Highly reccommend this lens. Very pleased with it.

I wanted the extra sharpness of a prime without a huge price tag and the 50mm 1.8 was the perfect solution. I was a little hesitant because it was VERY cheap, but it has performed stellar. Focus drive can be a little noisy and certainly would not want to drop it, but it has been great as a walkaround and portrait lens. I have also gotten some decent landscapes with it as well. Lightweight, sharp, fast, and cheap; what more can you ask for, really?

This is a great lens for the price! Around $100 or so for a F1.8 lens is amazing. Great for portrait and landscape photos, in most any type of lighting conditions. The low F-stop means a very fast shutter and autofocus time, and obviously low light capabilities as well. The only con is the plastic base, not really meant for rugged use. But of course, when your handling a $100 lens and a $1400 camera body, you are obviously going to take care in attaching and detaching the lens from the body...Overall I reccomend this lens!

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

Serious photographers would obviously more likely go for the much more expensive 1.4 version of this lens, but for people just getting into DSLR photography, this lens is a no-brainer. To begin with, it's a lot more crisp than the kit zoom lens that comes most canon cameras. Secondly, it's super fast- I get great shots indoors with no flash. The f 1.8 aperture also allows you to get great blurred backgrounds when desired. For newbies, this lens will help put your photos clearly out of the "point and shoot" class. I have read some negative comments on the durability of the lens, but I have had no problems, and really, for [$]its a great bargain. It's also great to go out and shoot with a prime lens (as opposed to the zoom that came with your rebel) - it makes you work a bit for your shots and the results are often very rewarding. Remember- Henri Cartier-Bresson only used a 50 mm lens!

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

I am in love with my new 50mm! It has stayed on my camera since it arrived! My need to get a sweet blurry background(bokeh)in my photos was fulfilled with this lens. It produces a crystal clear image of focus. Being a small product makes it easy to sneek in any bag for travel. You MUST add this to your collection!

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

I bought it as a second lens for my Canon XSi (the first is the 18-55mm kit lens). For less than [$], I think it's a good lens to get to dSLRs. That's what I do too.The small f is good for portraits, specially for night shots and/or when you want that blurry background. I'm sure an f/1.4 or f/1.2 would be even better BUT for someone to start and that still doesn't really know what to do, IT'S A MUST-HAVE!!!

Comments about Canon 50mm F1.8 II Lens ( 2514A002 ):

Seriously it's hard to beat this lens for the price. Very sharp, nice bokeh, and great low-light capability. The construction could be better, but come on... its under $100!
