I've been drooling over this lens for a while. Now that I finally have it I wish I hadn't put off the purchase for so long. I could not decide between IS vs. non-IS the 4.0L was not even considered since I knew i would be in low light situations. Don't spend the money on the IS version. It's not worth the added weight, size and battery consumption. Spring for a monopod if you need to. If you can afford this lense you might as well move up to at least a 50D (my next purchase). I'm using this with a 20D currently and I'm very happy with the results.

I use this lens for children sports and 1st Communion shots. Debated about paying extra for the IS version, but so far it doesn't seem like I've missed many shots not having that feature.

After I received the 70-200MM f2.8 lens, I started taking pictures of everything and what dramatic pictures I received. I had been saving up for over 2 years to purchase this lens due to the [$] price tag, but it was well worth it. Wish that I had the money to purchase this ALOT sooner. I took some great trips right before I got this lens. Now trying to convince my wife to go back and visit some of the spots, just I can take pictures with this lens.

This is the lens I've been lusting after for months and it has not disappointed. I love my 85mm prime lens but when I need to shoot candids of kids, this allows me to back away quite a bit to better allow for natural shots. Some may feel the weight of this lens is a negative...I personally feel it is a positive. I like the hefty build and quality you can feel. It has not been troublesome for me at all.

Excellent lens, fast, accurate, crisp pictures, very good light management. A bit expensive, however, it does a good job.. Looks great on my Canon T1i.

I bought the EF 70-200mm f2.8 USM specifically for use at indoor sporting events (basketball) on my 1D Mark III, and couldn't be happier. The lens is sharp at all focal lengths & maximum aperture and the focus is silent & very fast. Detail is sharp, colors are true and the focus speed helps me catch the shots I only imagined before. The lens is heavy, but that's to be expected if you want to get this level of quality in a zoom lens. It actually balances out quite nicely with my 1D and I have no problems hand holding it. The tripod mount makes a perfect place to rest my hand. I shot 3 games in a row last Friday with no significant fatigue. For sports action, the lens is actually better without IS in my opinion.

As a sports photographer, I have used this lens on both the Canon EOS 20D and EOS 50D with excellent results. Even though the focal length may be short for some sports shots, attaching this lens to a digital SLR with a 1.6 crop-factor high resolution sensor like that of the Canon EOS 50d will allow you to crop in long shots and still retain the quality depending on the shooting conditions. Truly, the next step up in image quality would be a prime, but this lens offers great mobility without the encumbrance of a mono-pod and it's great when you're shooting from the sidelines and have to dodge an errant baseball, softball, hockey puck or player!

A really great lens. Feels incredibly strong and durable in your hands, but a little heavy on the camera. Auto focus is lightning fast, sharpness is abundant and color is accurate. Focus switches make it easy to help the auto focus out yourself. Tripod ring is a great addition and makes it a more versatile lens.
