(based on 17 ratings)
Brand: Canon
Located in: Photography, Camera Lenses
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards that today's photographers demand. Improved Image Stabilizer Technology provides up to three stops of "shake" correction, and the "Mode 2" option stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject. Compared to the original Canon EF 75-300mm IS zoom lens, this telephoto lens has faster autofocus, and overall the lens is lighter and has a smaller diameter than the original. The zoom ring can be locked at the 70mm position, making this powerful lens easy to transport, too.

In order to minimize the amount of gear I have to carry, I was looking for a broad spectrum utility lens. This is it. Not too heavy, good, fast focus, image stabilization and high quality optics.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:

A nice lens for the money. One draw back is the lack of a sharp picture at the 300mm zoom level. All other zoom ranges seem fine.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I bought my DO based on a "new" second-hand offer in June 2008. I used an EOS 400D until Thursday last week and now an EOS 7D.
I love this lens because his focus is very fast which I need by travelling. It is short and good to handle and has a build quality near to "L". IS and manual focus are additional positive points.

Buy this if can't afford the F2.8 L lenses.
For digital and full frame.
Works good if light is enough. IS is effective. Color and contrast is almost same as L lense.
USM is average.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:

Considered getting for over a year to go with my 40D since my very old 70-210 was heavy and slow and I needed something for sporting events. So far works fine, as expected not perfect with rapit shots on all the way zoomed out sometimes, but didn't think it could be perfect on the auto focus when shooting that fast a frame shot on a moving object. I still need to play around with some more, but like the IS on it which my old zoom did not have, a big positive difference just in that.

I live in rural area where wildlife is plentiful.I use this to capture the animals in the wild. This lens is easy to mount, easy to use and takes outstanding photos. It is slightly heavier than i would like, but on a tripod it is of minor consequence.

I use this on my Rebel XSI. This lens is a great telephoto lens for the price. Sure it isn't as crystal clear as an L series at 300mm, but then again, you don't have to get a second mortgage to buy this one either.

Great lens as long as you have ample lighting (probably not great for indoor sports). Perfect for outdoor, daytime shots. Sharp focus. IS works as specified.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:

This is a well constructed lens that works well. Very sharp from 70 to 200mm and OK from 200 to 300.
Image stabilizer allows about (2) stops lower shutter speeds which makes up for the small aperture.
Focuses fast on 30D nd 40D bodies and does not take up too much space in the camera case. Like most non-L Canon lenses, the hood is an over-priced extra.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I really like this lens and it has worked out very well. I enjoy taking aviation related photos and the zoom works awesome when you can't get up real close to the subject being captured. I have used it at a radio control airplane airfield and was able to capture some great close up shots of aircraft in action. Took some pet photos also which the detail came out spectacular. Would highly recommend this lens as an essential add on for your camera.
