Lense is of typical Nikon quality. Recommend using a tripod if framing takes more than a few seconds because this lense is heavy!

Comments about NIKON Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Vibration Reduction Lens-:
Great product, I've heard a lot about how it is slow it is when if focus, but I have not had any problems with it, as I have photographed birds and aircraft in flight and have not missed a shot yet because of slow or jumpy focusing. This is a lens that will will stay in my bag and will be used often
Comments about NIKON Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Vibration Reduction Lens-:
I have found that I don't use this lens as much as I thought I would. It is difficult to shoot hand-held despite the VR. It really needs to be used with a tripod or at least a monopod. It is quite expensive and it weights a lot too. Despite these drawbacks, it takes great pictures with my D300.
Comments about NIKON Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Vibration Reduction Lens-:
I use this lens for wildlife and distant scenery shots. It has a great zoom, but is heavy. Unless you have a very steady hand, you should use a support for the lens even with the VR feature. Other than the weight, the only other negative is the focus is a little slow, but if you are patient you can get some great photos with this lens.

Comments about NIKON Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Vibration Reduction Lens-:
This lens will reach out and touch. Little slower to focus in my D80 camera than other Nikkor lens. Best used with a tri-pod or single rod support. It's weight is a little heavy to hand hold for very long. All in all I have enjoyed it very much. A close match but lighter lens might be Nikon's 70-300 zoom.
