Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

There's no such thing as an "all-purpose" lens..but this one comes as close as any I've ever owned in 50 years of shooting. 16mm - 85mm (24 - 130 equivalent)
covers 90% of my requirements and the lens is extremely sharp and beautifully contrasty throughout it's range! The loss of a stop or two in speed is easily made up by increasing ISO level. The name of this lens is QUALITY...both in build and performance.
Like most of the professional reviewers, I highly recommend this lens to Pro and advanced amateur alike.

This lens is great! i Pick it up as an upgrade for my D60. it's not that wider then the kit lens but the sharpness and contrast is a great selling point for me. it's no Pro lens but it does the job great walking around lens. if your looking to upgrade your kit lens consider this lens.

I do wish it could be a little faster like f/ 2.8 though out the zoom.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

I bought a D60 camera body and a 16-85ED VR lens for my wife; she already had a D40 & kit lens with which she was quite happy but I wanted her to have a modest increase in zoom range, the same level of sharpness and if possible a little less distortion. This lens exceeds all my expectations and my wife, who thinks of a camera as a recording instrument and usually doesn't get excited about equipment per se, immediately noticed the difference and now enjoys taking photos more than ever. With the onboard flash, the lens casts a shadow at 16mm, from 18mm and beyond, there is none. Very sharp, nice contrast & color , very slight increase in size & weight.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

I bought this lens because I was looking for an all-purpose lens and the range I get with this is perfect for the majority of things I need to photograph. I focus mainly on portrait photography and this gives me enough range to catch children. It will definitely leave you wanting a telephoto eventually but not immediately like the 18-55 lens. Overall, I found this to be the bests choice for my first lens that would give me great pictures and buy me time before my next big lens purchase.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

This lens was an upgrade to the 18-55mm VR kit lens for my D60. I liked the range of this DX zoom as it best approximates the 35-135mm AI lens I toted on my F3 for years. Although at times with that lens I found the need for more wide, particularly indoors. So this DX lens seemed a perfect fit for my D60.The questions for me was how much bigger and heavier was it over the 18-55mm VR kit lens and was it worth the cost. I find the 16-85mm VR matches the weight of the D60 body perfectly and I think the little bit of extra weight over the kit lens is actually an advantage in holding the camera steady for me. Over the shoulder the difference in weight isn't that noticeable. Size wise it's almost exactly the same dimensions the kit lens except instead of stepping down at the focus ring part like the 18-55mm VR does the 16-85mm keeps that full diameter all the way to the lens cap. The 16-85mm VR is sleeker too without that moulded add-on look to the VR that the 18-55mm VR kit lens has.It must be said that 18-55mm VR kit lens really is a nice performer so it can be hard to justify such a premium cost for the 16-85mm VR when the worthy 18-55mm VR *comes* with the D60 already. It doesn't help matters that camera stores everywhere have jacked the price up on the 16-85mm VR from [$]to [$]THIS WEEK! The 18-55mm VR kit lens is a nice performer but the 16-85mm VR is noticeably better. But for the more casual photographer it may be impossible to justify the additional expense of this lens over the decent kit lens. While they say there is no "pro" DX glass the 16-85mm VR is definitely semi-pro quality. So for me the image quality, build quality and familiar zoom range was worth it and I would buy again (although begrudgingly at this jacked up price). Finally, my advice to anyone lens shopping... go to [@]and do a search for the name of the lens(es) you are considering (e.g., search for "nikon 16-85mm vr") and look through the photographs in slideshow mode. ~[@]

One of the better Nikon Zoom lenses

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

With so many choices from Nikon and "other" lens makers for today's digital cameras, it can be dizzying trying to find the "ideal" lens. In many respects, the Nikon 16-85 VR lens may be the perfect go to lens for your camera. The VR II feature enables a 3 to 4 stop added option for the photographer. Afterall, how many "acceptable" shots can you safely take at a 1/2 second shutter speed? You can with this lens! The heft of this lens may be considered as a negative, but the offset is that you know that it is a hefty lens because it's not entirely made of plastic (as the 18-55 kit lens is). With the D300 the lens weight "feels" solid and comfortable. Are there sharper lens out there? Yes - perhaps there may be however, for the price (which at more than five or six big bills is nothing to sneeze at) the 16-85 is a good value. Another point is that the zoom range allows the equivalent of a 24mm coverage from a full frame camera to a mid telephoto of 127mm. Finally, this lens is a nice complement to the 70-200 f2.8 VR lens!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

This lens is sharp corner to corner and better than my 18-70mm Nikkor. The VR works well. I can have sharp images taken at 1/20 sec with lens set at 85mm. It's a perfect walk around DX lens that complements my 70-300mm VR in zoom range. The lens is about half an inch taller than the 18-70mm, but feels heavier. The weight is well distributed on a D70/D80/D90, but when mounted on a D40 or D60 the front end feels too heavy. Wish the aperture could be f/4 across the zoom range, otherwise the lens construction is nearly flawless. ABE's of Maine did a good job in order processing.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

After using the Nikon 18-200 Vr for two years, I got tired of the zoom creep and photos that appeared a little soft. The 16-85 covers 90% of what I do as a photojournalist but what's more important is how razor sharp the images are. Unbelievable--the difference is staggering.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

A superb little do-it-all lens for all Nikon DX users. Very well built, much better than similar lenses from competing brands (a consumer-grade Nikon is still a Nikon). Very sharp even at max apertures. It would be nice if Nikon makes a F3.5-4.5 version of it, but it will be bulkier as well.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

I take a lot of landscape, so I'd rather pay extra $300 for the 16mm wide angle. This lens is very heavy (it's heavier than my D80 body). The zoom ring is tight, and it is located furthest from the camera mount. I always mistaken it as the focusing ring. The max f-stop is 5.6 - a bit small at 85mm, but I guest this is why we need VR. Other then the weight, zoom ring and f-stop, this lens is solid in construction. The image is sharp as a Nikkor, with minimal barrel distortion above 18mm (eighteen mm).

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

A great upgrade for the standard kit lenses. Well built, fast focus, and sharp as a tack. The 16-85mm VR + 70-300mm VR make a great travel kit and the perfect step between the kit lenses and the F2.8 beasts. Fair trade of speed for weight and cost. The zoom is smooth and manual focus overrides are simple.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

The sharpness of this lens is amazing. I upgraded from an 18-70mm and the improvment in output is easily seen, and the 18-70 is no slouch. I was also pleasently surprised by the construction and the zoom ring rotation (nice and tight). Although this is not built like a pro lens, it is significantly better than the 18-70mm and way better than other kit lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

This lens is sharper than the Nikkor 18-200 VR lens. It produced constantly good results. The bokeh is so so. About in the same leage as the 18-200 lens. I have both of these lenses, so the only negative thing I can say about the 16-85 lens is that it focuses slower then the former lens. Surprisingly, its about the same price! You win on sharpness and lose on focus speed.
