Absolutely great lens. Still use 85mm 1.8 - Don't discount wide aperture prime lenses! SWM - outstanding - continuous sharp focus with zoom and pan all at the same time; VR VR VR VR + focus override: used on D80(dumpster diving - bought this lens with the money I saved from the more expensive Nikons. D90/D300/D200 with cheap lens? DO NOT DO THIS. I would put this on a D60 and/or D40 too. Can still find new D80s. More good pics come with knowledge and better lenses, not expensive Camera bodies. Just provided you with the knowledge, you get the good lens! Best to all.

Only used now for 2 weeks in France, heavier then what I expected but, VR is great, photos that would normally require flash come off great without, tele-Zoom is excellent, output quality is quite good have seen some probs at full zoom but not much, great all around lens, once you put it on it will stay forever no need to carry multiple lenes

I purchased this to replace my kit 18-55 and 55-200mm lenses. This is the ultimate replacement, as it has an effective optical zoom range of 11x. Changing my other kit lenses was easy, but not quick enough to catch things that this lens makes a breeze doing. Just zoom in, catch the action, and away you go. Of course, the maximum aperture isn't perfect being variable and not as good as prime or more expensive lenses, but to balance that comment out, this lens is quite affordable for what it can do.

I upgraded from a set of 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. The fact that I don't have to carry around the extra lens and constantly change them was worth the money alone. This is a perfect grab and go lens.

I am an avid photographer and really enjoy using this lens. I can just grab the camera and go with this lens attached. I don't have to worry about switching back and forth often.

It's not nearly as heavy as you would expect, considering how much glass you are holding.

It focuses very quickly. I've used this camera in many different settings and in tons of different kinds of light, and it is consistently high quality.

The one thing I've noticed is that the more you use the lens, the easier it turns and this does cause some lens creep eventually. All in all, though, that's not a major issue whatsoever and it does take a while before that starts to happen.

This lens was probably the best purchase I've ever made and the 5 year warranty just makes it that much sweeter.

If it were not for the lens creep this would a hands down 5 star. It's a 4.8 with the creep. Creep can be stopped by holding finger out.
This serves as a great landscape to telephoto lens and the practicality of it is oustanding. I was taking landscape photos then an eagle flew overhead and I was able to capture it. Overall, great product.

I really like the lens, it was a good thing to spend bonus money on. The VR works very well. If you have the cash, buy the lens. If not, buy the 18-70mm and 55-200mm non vr lens to cover the same range.

I have this lens on a D200. Before settling on it, I used a D40, and a D60 and the D200 with the "KIT LENSES". This lens saves swapping lens all the time (and saves having to carry extra gear all over the country). Had to buy the lens, because I got the D200 body from a semi-pro who upgraded to the D300 She refuses to ever part with her 18-200 lens. The only concern one might have is weight. Let's face it, if weight is an issue, then you would not be carrying a Nikon Dxxx. You would buy the Lumix DMC-LX3.
If price is an issue, you would do well with the Lumix DMC-LX3.
I have shaky hands, so the weight of this lens balances the weight of the body, and the vibration reduction is perfect for me.

Got this lens based on so many enthusiastic reviews and it's compatability with my D40. I needed something that would allow me to photograph people parts more closely at work and for an upcoming trip to Europe. With respect to other reviews I note that it has a discernible noise when auto focusing (not a big deal) and that the auto focus does not allow me to shoot if I am too close. If I shift to manual I seem to get very good resolution and am able to get closer. VR is a definite improvement. I was a little suprised how heavy it feels on the camera, but at least I won't have to bring multiple lenses on my trip.

It is a great single lens system, if you don't want to carry 4 different lenses then this is the one for you. Great quick sharp focus at all focal lengths. If you want to nit pick, you can find fault at the extremes, but it is a zoom lens and all zoom lenes have some issues. Some reviews you may see talk of lens creep, mine lens does not creep, perhaps it will as it ages. VR is great, really quiets the camera shake.

I have always used Nikon cameras, but would use off-brand lenses; so this is my first Nikon lens. I was looking for a one lens only system to couple with my new Nikon D90 and this lens came out the winner. The only other serious contender was the Tamron 18-300, but autofocus problems seemed to be a major concern in many of the reviews.
This lens has not disappointed me. I photograph Siberian Huskys for calendars, both portrait and outdoor action, and needed the zoom versatility and flawless quick focus. I usually work with good light so the 3.5/5.6 aperature range is very acceptable. The VR works very well and with the D90's auto ISO settings I can get higher shutter speeds that makes the lens perform much better than a 3.5/5.6 standard non-VR lens. For low light conditions without a flash, this lens will be marginal, but OK.
Overall, I give it an A-. I do not plan on buying any more lenses for the camera. Pay the extra bucks - it's worth it!

I researched quite a bit before buying my Nikon D90. Then I needed a lense. Several articles recommended this Nikkor 18-200. It really is the only need you have to have. Amazing. Great close ups. Amazing zoom. Really fast autofocus.

I travel the world and wanted something I could take anywhere. The overall size and weight is a bit larger. But the D90 and this lense are so fun you want to use them.

I am not a Pro. But for an amateur this Lense and a D90 is all you need.

Vibration reduction works much better than on my 18-55 VR. The lens feels solid and substantial, as any lens this expensive should. Focus is a little slow every now and then, but it isn't really a big deal. It has the zoom range to be appropriate for nearly any well-lit situation. Night/low-light performance is limited, especially up close, as the built-in flash on my D60 is noticeably blocked in pictures. This is the lens that will stay on my camera the vast majority of the time, and I'm absolutely thrilled with it.

I got this lens for 2 reasons. The first, so I don't have to change lenses all the time. Switching between 18-55 and 55-200 gets old and gets dust in the camera. The second, is that my hand is not the steadiest and the VR helps when I'm doing family portraits, senior pictures, etc... I do a lot of sports and this lens is not much use for that. I think the VR actually negatively affects sharpness at high shutter speeds. The only time this lens will not be on my camera is when I need a long lens for sports and when I need a fast lens for low light, and I can't use a flash.

I was planning on going the cheap way and just use the lens that came with my D40 till a friend showed me just how much more I can get out of a quality lens. I began the search for a lens that could do it all. After everything I read (here included) I just kept coming back to this lens. It was a tad more than I wanted to spend but I am planning on doing this for a long time and quality lenses seem to transcend time. Camera bodies seem to become obsolete after a couple years but a 10 year old lens is still "up to date". Well so far I have only shot a couple hundred pics but they have all been great, nothing less than perfection to report so far. Even the "lens creep" that others wrote about has been a non-issue. Maybe as time goes on it will loosen up and become a problem but not yet.

I've had the lens about a month and its performance is a expected for the price.
The lens cannot be locked at its shortest focal length and the creep is an aggravation. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but it would seem for that should not be a problem in that price range. And why can't Nikon provide a deeper, easy to squeeze lens cap? It's not easy with bare fingers and impossible with even thin gloves.

I'm no expert but I've read some good reviews. For my purposes, I just wanted an all-around lens that was simple to carry around and travel with. Having a newborn (primary purpose for purchasing a DSLR plus lens) I can use all the minimalization of equipment that I can get. That being said, my point-and-shoot is not fast enough to capture my kid's motions. I cannot complain about photo quality as the photos have turned out beautifully (of course, that could just be my kid looking beautiful). Take some time to read others' reviews (particularly from the experts) but I have to say, I am pleased thus far.

A really great lens for almost everything. Only caution is that the depth of field is fairly shallow and it tries to focus just closer than infinity when taking landscapes. Easy to manually override when taking landscapes.

This lens is fast and accurate. I use it with a D-200 and it keeps up well with what ever I've pointed it at. Very versatile whether shooting wildlife or sports. Not as rugged as the older Nikkor lenses, but solid and well built.

...well almost. The lens has been great. I have had it for several months with my D40x and it is what I was looking for. Only one issue and it is not the lens. I was hoping that having the 18-200mm, I would not have to change the lens out and increase my chance of getting dust on the sensor. Well got dust on the sensor anyway. Again, not the len's fault. Should have waited for the D60 maybe (with the dust reduction system); and it's not that hard to clean the dust off the sensor if you get a cleaning kit.
Okay, the pros to the lens. I rarely need to change it out to the 18-50mm. This 18-200mm captures just about everything I am looking for. A friend has the 70-300mm and liked this lens more. This lens is great for the shots near by as well as the ones far away. I wouldn't change my purchase.

Some cons, to consider but not deal breakers in my view if you know what you are dealing with. (1) The lens is heavier than either the 18-50mm or the 50-200mm, but you would be carrying both of them any to get the same shots with just this one lens. (2) In low light shots when you need the flash, at the bottom end around 18-24mm you will get a blacked out area from the top of the lens. This is kind of stated in the Nikon information for the distance the lens works well in. Okay so either change to a lens like the 18-50mm or adjust the zoom to something greater than 24mm or just shot lower and crop the black area out. The blacked out area only takes about the bottom 5-10% of the picture. (3) Also, it has happened a few times, but again if you know about, you can work around it. Since the lens is "heavier" (honestly it is not that heavy relatively speaking) if you are shooting downwards, the lens with drift to a larger zoom. Just hold the lens from drifting can help reduce this issue.

Bottom line, even with the "cons", this lens is still a great deal and I got what I was looking for from it. I would recommend this lens to anyone who is considering it.

Overall this is a very good lens. However, it's heavy too. Also, I have to sent it back to be fixed on motor for it went dead after 7 months old. Yet the NIKON lens service is very responsible and quick. It only took them less than 1 weeks to fix it and send it back to me. Love it.
