this lens is beyond a doubt one of the best lenses nikon has ever made. the large aperture and fast autofocus motor can produce astounding pictures. the only negative is the size and weight, but honestly after a while you won't even feel it anymore.
don't buy third party's equivalent. i tried it and it just didn't turn out right, so i returned it and bought the nikon's. it's world's better...

Excellent lens, impeccable optics, very heavy (considering that such an expensive lens is generally used with an heavy camera too - I use it with D300) and you really need arm muscle to hold it.
The sharpness, speed of auto focus in any light, overall quality of the resulted picture makes any the effort worth!
One annoying aspect: the font lens hood is coming often off the lens in the camera bag while in transport mode - though the design looks identical with the 24-70mm f2.8 it is not the same in functionality. No problem while in use though.
I recommend buying also a monopod for it.

I use this photographing indoor sports that I can not use a flash. This lens is perfect. Crystal sharp and for the amount of zoom the lens is not that heavy or big.
If take photos in low or high light conditions this is the best lens you can get. Who ever heard of 70-200 zoom with a 2.8 speed. I love this lens and has definitely brought my pictures to a new level. If I could marry it and call her Shelly I would…. ;-)

Lighter and slimmer (though a tad longer) than competing 70-200 f2.8 lenses. VR works great. If you have a steady hand you can even get better result than Nikon claimed 3 stop. Very fast focus, sharp, works great with TC-17E.

Outstanding build quality. It has a total quality feel to it to match it's reputation as a pro level lens. It focuses razor sharp and super quick, reducing the number of shots missed in fast-moving sports like soccer. It also is able to shoot in very marginal lighting conditions and is a huge improvement over my previous telefoto, the Nikon 55-200 VR lens. And you could almost justify the price of the lens just by the way others view you. I had half a dozen people come up and ask me at a motocross event what magazine I was shooting for and could they buy some of the pictures I was taking. It instantly buys you access to most sidelines and areas that might be off limits to amateur photographers, even though I definitely consider myself one as well.

Absolutely stunning photos from this lens! The large atetture allows for clear, crisp photos. Great for sports and wildlife enthusiasts, and just a general overall great zom lens. Only drawback is the weight, but with a monopod it's easily manuvered for quick shots. Would highly recommend this lens as an addition to any camera bag!!

One of the sharpest lenses in my bag. I've used primes and other pro nikkor glass and this one is so sharp one would mistake it for a prime lens. It's made of metal, weather sealed for durable all purpose all weather shooting situations. I would definitely recommend this to any aspiring professional shooter.

This is a great product. It is costly but worth the expenditure. It is built sturdy and well constructed which results in in it being heavy as well as simply what it is is going to be heavy no mater what. Can't get a better piece of equipement to do what one would use this piece for.
