Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

The Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens is definitely one of the better zoom-upgrades you can purchase for the its' price. I captured the subjects from quite a distance, in a low-light stage location, with contrasting spotlight. With a few tweaks at manual mode,I got amazingly vivid pictures! I need to use it more at normal, to bright lighting and get more acquainted of its' active mode. You have to get used to the weight if you like taking many, distant photo-shoots.

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

I got this lens for a trip to the Yellowstone National Park and it was really useful to capture the wildlife. It's amazing how the active VR can really stabilize the image with a full 300mm in action.
The lens is a little bit heavy, but what can you expect from a 70-300mm, right? For this reason to interchange it with another lens can become a bit annoying and the idea to get another body never goes away. But with a short budget you can really accept this minor points and enjoy the quality of the image with the usual Nikon high standards.

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

Good lens and good value. And definitely has good photographic potential.

But doesn't fit my rather minimal tote-around camera bag. Too big, and a little heavy. Not to say you can get 70-300mm much smaller and lighter. Just not an ideal tote-around lens, to augment my 18-55mm.

I wanted a lens for which I did not need a tripod and yet would be able to get closer photos of wildlife. It is a bit heavy but attaches and detaches easily. The photographic results are most satisfying. Since I tend to take photos "on the fly", the VR feature is more than an added plus.

Much better wide open at 300mm than I was lead to believe by online reviews. Stopped down just a little it gets excellent in my opinion. The zoom is tight, the way I like it. The lens balances great on a D300. I don't use a tripod, so the only caution I would make is that even with VR, grip the entire barrel of the lens at 300mm to prevent torque motion.

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

The 70-300 has been perfectly acceptable as a telephoto zoom coupled with my D300. I do not shoot enough sports or wildlife to justify buying the 70-200 f/2.8, and I wasn't convinced that the 80-400 or a prime like the 180 would meet my needs. So far, I have used the 70-300 for wildlife shots (very good, though chromatic aberration is a bit of a problem), pictures of the moon (outstanding on a tripod), landscape shots where I want the perspective compressed, and indoor sports (not its strong suit). Some samples are here:[@]The 70-300 has easily replaced the 18-200 as my telephoto zoom. I am quite happy with it, especially since it costs 1/3 of the 70-200.P.S. Though I haven't tried this combination, I suspect the 70-300 would work wonders on a D700, given the D700's outstanding performance at high ISO's, which would compensate for this not being fast glass.

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

This 70-300 VR lens is great for the low budget photographer shooting high school sports action shots. The lens is sharp, quick to focus, and the focus motor is extremely quiet. The two issues I have is the telephoto rotation is not as smooth as I like, and when my D90 is in autofocus-C mode the lens tend to hunt for the focus point when lighting is poor.

I have had great success for Sports during the day even using Sports mode on my D40. My other daughter plays lacrosse and all the games are at night. This poses special challenges that even in "S" mode at ~1/125sec, F(5.2), high ISO are not great even with the Flash on. It appears I need a much better flash to use faster shutter speeds with this lens and limit on aperture of no larger than ~F5.0. I'll be trying with a higher end Flash this week. Feel free to email me if you have any tips on this! ssandrew_us[@]

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

I usually have my 80-200f/2.8 with me, but the good tests of this 70-300 lens convinced me that Nikon took very seriously competition with Canon and addressed the complaints about quality of their consumer or prosumer class lenses. The lens is indeed very well made, quite sharp, little or no distortions (finally, you can do it Nikon!) and it even has a weather seal!

The lens is equipped with silent focusing and an automatic focus override upon turning the focusing ring. This works just like with the Canon EF lenses, so Nikon got the message and has joined the party at last. The VR (Nikon's version of IS) works very well indeed.

However, with F/5.6 this lens is dark, and the auto focus has often problems even on a D300. I had even cases in which the lens would not start to focus at all. I had to focus manually to "jump start" the process, and than the camera would do the rest.

So far I like this lens a lot.

Coming from both a Nikkor 70-210mm 4-5.6 and a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG this lens is a HUGE improvement. It focuses fast, isn't too heavy or long and is sharp all the way to 300mm. There are better zooms out there but not at this price. I feel the only thing you're giving up by getting this lens is speed but unless you plan on paying four times the price for the 70-200mm 2.8 then this is the lens to get.

This is a great lens for those who are doing wildlife or sports photography. Quick, accurate focusing and sharp images as long as you watch your shutter speed. The VR helps in this regard. The only "con" would be its size, however there really isn't any way around that without sacrificing quality.

I mostly use this lens for sports photography and it performs well. Quick to focus, sharp images and best of all has that great Nikon quality feel of solid construction and smooth action. The only downside if I am pressed for one is that it is on the heavy side. Then again, I believe this goes hand in hand with the quality of the materials and construction. Highly recommended.

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

The lens' focusing is quick and sharp. I plan to use this lens for action (flying-airplane show) and wildlife (flying birds) pictures but it is not quite suitable because the zoom ring movement is rather stiff and therefore slows down the picture taking.

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

This is an excellent telephoto lens. I really appreciate the reach at 300mm. The colors and sharpness of this lens are exceptional. I think the construction quality is great as well although it is still made of hard plastic. The VR is very effective in getting shots where the lighting is difficult. The best brokeh (background blur) of any lens I have. I'm glad I chose this lens over some of the cheaper other telephotos. Everything I wanted in a telephoto. If you can't get good shots with it, you can't blame it on the lens.

The lens is pretty good, and I am especially impressed with the VR feature. Having said that, do NOT buy the filters for this lens ... it made all my shots blurry. The filters were a total waste of money. But the lens is definitely worth it.

This lens performs much better than I expected. The focus is sharp, crisp and fast. The VR is a MUST have feature.
This lens supplements my 18-135 telephoto and an old Nikon 24 mm, f2 manual focus.
I can't imagine anyone serious about photography not have a lens like this in their bag.

A long lens that still works well for most general photography. Purchased specifically for birds/wildlife work, with my D300, it handles most other jobs, too. Yes, it is a bit heavy, but what high quality telephoto zoom isn't?!

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

I use this lens on a D60, mostly for sports photos -- soccer, running, sailing, and motorsports. It produces excellent images with consistently sharp focus, good control of depth of field, nice bokeh, and very good color fringing results on a DX format body.

It is a bit heavy and bulky when used on a small body like the D60, but is still quite serviceable. A larger/heavier body like a D300, D700, or D3 would balance better with this rather substantial lens.

Overall it is an excellent performer and an equally good price point.

Comments about Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR Lens:

A great lens for the "occasional" photographer. I use it on vacations, usually for wildlife. It has done exactly what I wanted in that it allows me to get up close to the dangerous subjects (like buffalo, elk or bear). I took a photo of a moose at Oxbow Bend in the Tetons. I wouldn't have been able to without my new lens. I'm glad I bought it.

Very good general use telephoto zoom lens. Good sharpness and contrast, nice color. Autofocus is fast as long as you have plenty of available light. It's not a fast lens as it's maximum aperture is f/4.5, but for daytime use it works just fine.
