The DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL lens is the perfect complement to a digital Pentax SLR camera, providing the popular range of angle of view which is most associated with a standard zoom lens today. Pentax's DA series feature a "Quick-Shift Focus System" which allows an instant switch from autofocus to manual focus with a slight twist of the focus ring. Coupled with simple, functional design, and the elimination of the aperture ring, the camera's operability is significantly improved. The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5 x 15.7mm size of the CCD image sensor used in Pentax digital SLRs, and thus will not cover the full frame of a 35mm camera. The design contributes to dramatic size and weight reduction, not to mention production costs.

I waited a long time before buying this lens -- took a lot of photos with the kit lens that left me wanting... Don't make the mistake of waiting as this lens does a much better job. I jumped when I saw a couple of posts on the Pentax Forum that hinted that this lens might be discontinued.This lens makes my K20D images even more impressive. I particularly like the F4 across the entire zoom range. Lens lives on my camera most of the time now.My hat is off to Abe's for fast service, too. [...]

This is an excellent general purpose lens. I wish it would go to 70mm rather than just 45mm, but for the price you can't beat it. Color, contrast, and sharpness are all significantly better than the 18-55 II kit lens. The amount of detail it can capture accurately is quite impressive. It also works sort of like a macro, not in terms of close-focus, but in terms of magnification.
