Comments about Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Lens:

I love this lens. I tend to leave it on my camera most of the time, unless I need an especially zoomed, macro, or different kind of shot, because the 18-55 range with wide-angle seems to be the perfect composition for most shots, especially in landscapes and sunsets. For pictures of people you might want to have more zoom, but it works great for group pictures.

The shots tend to be a little on the dark side, but I actually like the feel that gives the pictures, and it can be compensated for very easily. In low-light situations the focus is often painfully slow and it's difficult to avoid blurring, but tripods and a wide aperture can help there.

As far as the difference between the old version of this lens and the new one, I haven't noticed anything huge; it's possible that the focus has gotten faster and sharper, but I haven't done a comparison beyond general use. If you need to replace the first version of the lens, don't worry about getting the mark II-- it's still the same lens, with apparently a few subtle improvements.

Not a bad kit lens, and you certainly can't complain about the price. It has produced some decent images. Plenty fine for the non-pro like me, though I will certainly upgrade when the "fun money" fund permits.

Comments about Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Lens:

A great upgrade to the kit lens that I had with my Pentax K110D. I can't give you all the technical reasons why this lens is better than the kit lens that came with my camera but the pictures look noticeably better. I would recommend this lens to anyone who wants to a good quality walk around lens.
