It can be used with wide variety of subjects and it is an ideal large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensor. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 7.9" (20cm) throughout the entire zoom range. Maximum magnification of 1:2.3 enables close-up photography like a macro lens. The new lens design and multi layer lens coating reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 at 17mm wide angle and yet it is compact, with an overall length of 82.5mm (3.2") and diameter 79mm (3.1"). This lens is a huge upgrade from the comparable Nikor lens that came with our D40. We upgraded to a D200 and continued to use the same lens, but it just wasn't cutting it. Other lenses that we considered purchasing as replacements were quite expensive. The Sigma has proven to be an excellent lens and the price was affordable, especially at Abe's. Thank you Abe's of Maine for such a great deal!

This is an awesome lens. I did my side of research before deciding on this. My other option was Sigma 18-55 2.8 lens. But I think I made the right decision. Love the sharpness of the pictures, fast focusing. Overall a great lens. I am very happy with it

I bought the Sigma for a general use, candid shot lens. I trusted the reviews from the professionals and am completely satisfied with my purchase. This has become my "walk around" lens. With an ancillary hot shoe flash, it is great for all those grand kid and fun event shots.
