I was very impressed and satisfied with this lens! I'd heard about some poor focusing problems from some reviews, but there was no problems with the lens I got. It's perfect! I love it so much! Very crisp, clear photos and great bokeh :)
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
Great for low-light shots. The depth of field at wide open is truly amazing. Becomes a 48mm when used with 1.6x cropped cameras.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
After hearing mixed view's on this particular sigma I was worried about getting a 'bad copy' My lens is lovely and sharp, even at 1.4 (so long as the focus point is not missed. I have tested it on two portrait shoots, and used it for candid's at a Navy homecoming and had good results.
There have been a couple of times in high contrast lighting situations, where manual focus was needed due to missing focus (not user error)

I have been using the canon 50mm 1.4 for almost 2 years now. angle of view is a bit narrow and USM is not full time manual. After reading reviews and recommendation from POTN forum. I picked this up. The built quality is decades ahead of the canon. The optics is sharp and bokeh is beautiful. Mine copy has no focus problem. HSM is much faster than canon's USM on this lens. Full time manual is great on 7D when using video too. Also great for portrait on a crop lens perspective is different from the 50mm but the color and bokeh is simply better. Come with hood and carry pouch. 4 year warranty!

I have used this lens both indoors and out for candids and posed portraits. After all the reviews I read about poor focus, I was pleasantly surprised to see how sharp the photos from this lens are. The focus plane at wide aperatures is of course very shallow, which you have to keep in mind. The negative I have seen so far is the color of the photos from this lens. Photos taken with the Canon 50mm 1.8 (which isn't as sharp imo) have much better color, colors pop. Maybe it's just my white balance settings, but I don't think so, considering I have taken the same photos with both lenses outdoors, and seen noticable difference in the color intensity.

After owning a few zoom lenses that only got down to f/3.5, shooting with this f/1.4 was so refreshing and fun! This lens is great for casual photography in less-than-ideal lighting. It's small, durable, and it is my new default lens.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
After the purchase of canon 85 1.8, I seldom use my super zoom lens because of the night and day image quality difference. But I have always wanted some thing short, 85 is simply too long on my 40D indoors. After careful research, I locked my eyes on this little lens. And I am glad I did.
This lens is so much more versatile than 85, I can shoot half body picture indoors and full body outside without first walking away for 1 min.
Sharpness is not as good as 85, but reasonable wide open. Stopping down to f2, it gets very sweet. The color is cooler compared to my sigma zoom, very close to the feeling of canon lens, just not as saturated. And NO FOCUS PROBLEM, lucky me!
Now it is on my camera 80% of the time.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
Nice lens for the price.
Focus can be difficult in low light, but that has a bit to do with the body it's attached to (mine's on a 50D).
Nice output when stopped down a bit. Acceptable when opened up.
It seems to be made well enough, not cheap, but not
Satisfied with my purchase. It's just what I was expecting it to be.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
I've been looking for a wide aperture lens that would be close to the holy grail of 50 mm with the 1.6 lens factor of my Canon EOS-50D. Canon has a lovely one but, at noticeably more than $1000, I couldn't justify it. Then I discovered the Sigma 30 mm F/1.4 at a great price (thanks Abe's of Maine). The thing is I discovered it two days before I had a shoot that would really benefit from that lens. [...]The shoot was a great success.

I bought this lens as an upgrade to the Canon 50mm f1.8, and I have been very pleased with the quick and accurate focus in addition to the better focal length (on a Rebel XTi) and aperture for indoor snapshots. Manual focus ring is a bit stiff, but I mostly use AF, so not an issue for me. The sharpness and focus accuracy seems to fall between the Canon 50mm f1.8 and the Canon 35mm f1.4L (scales with price, big surprise.)
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
Great lens, great bang for the buck. Focusing is good, even in low light. Sharper than my EF 50mm f/1.4 wide open and has less CA, purple fringing wide open.
I wish it were sharper though. Border sharpness isn't quite there. Still, that's not too big an issue for me.

Great compensator for crop factor on less expensive Canon cameras. Fast focus, great for portraits and walkabout photography.

I just love it , never had any problems with focus using it on T1i.

I have this lens on a canon 40D and so far it's super sharp, focuses accurately and gives great colors.. You can spend thousands of dollars on an "L" lens and probably not be as sharp as this baby.
Get this prime!

This is a fantastic lens that produces great images
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
Ok after much, and I mean much looking around for a upgrade from my kit lens I decided to go with this prime. It was a tough call as some reviews reflect a rather negative experience on this lens, but I think that is mainly user error. Ok first off the difference between this lens and my kit 18-55 was amazing; razor sharp, color superb, and low light shooting made easy. If AF could match the ability this lens can produce then you would be golden, but my XS on very low light needs AF assist to let this baby do it's magic without flash. My set up is a Sigma 10-20, Sigma 30, Canon 60 Macro, and kit 70-300. Highly recommend Sigma if your in consideration of an up-grade.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
Started off buying the "Nifty Fifty" 50mm 1.8 to get a fast lens. By using it on a crop sensor camera (Canon T1i) it was just plain too narrow. This lens is wider and I don't have to step back 15ft to get everybody in the picture. The Clarity of the lens is absolutely better by a wide margin. The focus is DEAD ON. With a steady hand you get amazing results. I sold my flash unit (480EXII) because I no longer need it. Examples are readily available on Flickr. The amount of pictures should tell you that apparently it is a big favorite of users.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
This lense is great if you are looking for a 50mm equivelant for your 1.6 crop sensor. it's very sharp and fast and the 1.4 aperature is great for low light. It feels nice and strong and it is definately worth the price.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
This is about as close as you can find to a classic 50mm equivalent on a 1.6 crop sensor. Its an excellent focal length. Be aware that its designed for crop sensor cameras, so if you're shooting with a full frame camera, look at a different lens, the Canon 50mm f1.4 comes to mind (another excellent prime, I have it too).
Its so compact that it really makes my XTi a no brainer to bring along in any indoor or moderately wide angle situation. It allows me to capture pics indoor without a flash that I wouldn't have been able to before.
At f1.4, it has such a shallow depth of field you might think you have a problem lens when its working perfectly. Stopped down a bit (1.8 - 2.0) its incredibly sharp. If you're going to be shooting with it wide open, you should take some practice shots to get a feel of what such a narrow DoF is like. The focus speed is excellent.
I debated between this and the Canon 28mm f1.8 for a while. Some of the online message boards actually have fairly spirited debates over the pros/cons between the two lenses. Some people have claimed significant quality problems with the Sigma. So, far the quality on my copy has been excellent (I've only had it for a little more than a month). Frankly, I don't think you can go wrong with either lens, and given some of the comments I was prepared to be a bit disappointed either way.
Ultimately, I went with the Sigma for the extra partial f-stop, and have been very happy.
Also, one more benefit ... as another reviewer said its "Bokehlicious"
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
I really like how this lens has opened up a whole new range of photography compared to the stock lenses that came with my XTi. This lens is very fast, and a f1.4 it's very usable in low light conditions.

Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
I have been getting into the "bokeh" method of photography and this lens is just absolutely perfect for it. It will blur out any light source into the most perfect ball. Portraits are immaculate by focusing very specifically on the face and blurring out all the rest in a most seemless and beautiful way. Albeit a bit heavy, i don't mind because i know it's because of the real metal construction with a glass lens (vs plastic lens) which reassures me that this lens will rarely depreciate in value by any conventional wear and tear (plastic lenses over time create a white cloudy blur). If I were to ever think about reselling it (highly unlikely) I know I would still get a large percentage of my money back. It takes some time to master this lens, but once you do, you'll taking the most amazing shots. It'll even make you feel like a professional photographer.

excellent lens for the aps-c 1.6x crop. i found my myself walking around disneyland w/my camera bag and only used this lens. i had a 17-55mm lens, 50mm lens, and this lens on me and i ended up only using this lens. great and love the f 1.4.. but super sharp at f2
construction is solid. the focus ring is very well dampened. the only thing that i dont like is the focusing distance.. but oh well.. time to get a macro =)

I needed a short prime to use on my Canon XT when my 85 is too long. This lens was the perfect choice, tack sharp with lightning fast focus.
Comments about Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Lens For Canon:
I bought this lens to use as a "normal" lens on my crop frame canon. It works great in low light as well as for obtaining great bokeh. This is a very durable lens with great construction. The colors produced are of top quality and this is a great lens for most applications. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone in the market for a "normal" lens on crop frame.
