Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Canon:
I bought this lens as I can not afford a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L and I didn't want to take the hit on Canon's 70-200 f/4L. This is a great lens and it is solid, very well built. Focus is fast with the HSM as all of my sigma lenses are. I don't know how it compares iwth the USM of Canon, but I am happy.

This is a good lens but not for traveller who wants a light baggage. I return it immediately after discovering it's hefty weight. some thing like 3 lbs or more.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Canon:
I used this lens on Canon 40D. This is a good lens if use f/4 or above. I got some nice pictures with it. (I have compared it with the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L non-IS lens, the results are comparable, but with $400 less it is good deal) However, seems like there is general front focus issue at f/2.8, I had tried two of them and both had the same issue, so I called sigma and they said it is a fixable issue. I have sent mine to Sigma service for the fine tune. If you have a Canon 50D or 5D mark ii, the AF Microadjustment function should be able cure this issue. I have also tried manual focus at f/2.8 at 200mm zoom, the pictures are very sharp with nice bokeh. This is lens is capable to produce sharp image, it is also the reason I decide to let Sigma fix the focus issue. So I will recommend this lens to a friend but with the warning that "prepare to spend extra [$] to ship the lens to Sigma for adjustment."
Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Canon:
[...] I'd love to say that this was a great buy being hundreds of dollars less than the canon L series equivalent but sadly that did not prove to be the case. The lens has a significant auto-focus problem that means it continually front focuses by several mm resulting in blurred and unsatisfactory output. Sometimes you might not be quite sure of this - I wasn't to begin with but after I ran some tests from a tripod compared to a canon lens it became immediately apparent that it wasn't an issue of the image being too soft but that the focus point was fundamentally incorrect. Thinking I had the misfortune to just get a bad lens I sent it back and got a replacement - exactly the same problem (but worse); and chancing my luck a third time still encountered the same problem. [...]I opted for the Tamron version of this lens in the end, which despite a review I've read to the contrary, certainly didn't suffer from any auto-focus problem - the IQ from it is what I hoped for from the Sigma and it's a $100 cheaper too.If you can afford the Canon L then get it and benefit from the faster (and quieter) AF but if you don't have the money then get the Tamron, just steer clear of the Sigma.
Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Canon:
Got this lens few weeks ago and immediately noticed in the macro mode it had a front focus issu. Took a few more pictures outdoor, when f-stop is 5.6 or above, front focus issue was not as apperant. This problem only shows when depth of field is narrow. Some other review online also suggest this lens tend to have this problem. Will contact Sigma to get it serviced.

Excellent lens- a great alternative to Canon 70-200mm F2.8....Pictures are sharp, the bokeh is buttery smoooth... great sport/action lens, and wildlife- if you're into that background blur to make the subject pop out.
