I use this lens at horse shows with tremendous success. The extra 70mm over the Nikon is well worth it and there is no appreciable loss of detail.

I bought this lens last year when it came out. I've missed tons of shots with it because it needs tons of light to snap. If you think you're going to use this for action shots, your dead wrong. Frustrating as hell for a [$]. do everything lens. Kind of like those fax/phone/copier/printer machines, it wont be great at anything. It also broke out of the blue and a Tamron tech said he thought I was at fault by dropping it. I NEVER dropped it, there wasn't a mark on it, it just stopped zooming. They wanted to charge me $400. to fix it and after I flipped out on everyone at Tamron I could, they agreed to fix it for free. I dont think it's as good as it originally was, but it works. Beware of the do everything lenses. I will replace it with 2 lenses eventually.

Comments about TAMRON AFB003NII-700 18-270MM F/3.5-6.3 DI-II VC LD (IF) MACRO FOR NIKON:

I used this lens for the first time over a weekend in Charleston, SC. I was impressed by lens performance in a variety of situations: close-up, distance, sunlight, low-light at max zoom (indoors). Quality of photos reflect the historical importance of the city - the few bad photos were operator error, not failure of the lens. I found lens creep an issue (but was resolved with lens lock)as well as low-light conditions a challenge to autofocus (expected). The zoom is stiff when you transition manually from 70mm to 100mm range. There is a "clicking" noise from the image stabilization system that Tamron says is "normal". Once you get used to the "quirks" of the lens, it is a great all-in-one walk around lens.

I used this lens to shoot wedding pictures inside and outside last weekend, It worked quite well and focused quickly all but 3 times in the really low low light late into the reception during the dancing.

Comments about TAMRON AFB003NII-700 18-270MM F/3.5-6.3 DI-II VC LD (IF) MACRO FOR NIKON:

My wife & I recently spent 3 weeks in Australia taking over 5,000 pictures. I brought my Canon with a 70-200mm 2.8 heavy lens and my wife brought her D40 Nikon with a Nikon 18-200 lens. Needless to say, the Canon lens was fabulous. However, the lens we used the most was my wife's 18-200 Nikon lens - I loved it. So when I returned home, I bought the Tamron 18-270 lens (for my Nikon D70s)especially for travel and it is fantastic. I love the lock on the lens so it doesn't extend out when I am carrying it as my wife's Nikon does. The range is to die for. I haven't put the quality to any extreme tests other than to say it provides pictures that equal my professional lenses when viewing them on my 24" iMac full screen. I am also impressed with the smooth action of the lens and the quality feel of it. It's not super light, it's just well constructed. I made a great choice in buying it!

Comments about TAMRON AFB003NII-700 18-270MM F/3.5-6.3 DI-II VC LD (IF) MACRO FOR NIKON:

I bought this lens for the Worldwide PhotoWalk in July. It turned out to be a fantastic "walking around" lens. It allowed me to only carry 1 lens, perfect for street & travel photography!

Lens creep is about the only annoyance, but I typically rest one hand on the lens as I'm walking around. That kept the lens from moving.

Right out of the box there was a small piece of debris inside the lens. Didn't impact my images and Tamron is taking care of the cleaning under the warranty.

Comments about TAMRON AFB003NII-700 18-270MM F/3.5-6.3 DI-II VC LD (IF) MACRO FOR NIKON:

The lens makes for a great travel combo with my Nikon D90. I skipped getting Nikon's 18-105 kit lens and went with this one: a very wise decision. The excitement of using 15X zoom in such a great package lasted for about a month. That is, until I started shooting in low light or focusing on a subject against a busy background. This lens has a VERY slow auto-focus in aforementioned scenarios, taking 30sec to sometimes, more than a few minutes to get it right. Manual focusing is not easy to master especially since the focusing ring is bit stiff to turn. Images at longer end are not very sharp, but that's expected from superzooms such as this. The lens does have a zoom creep, which I've fixed using an ingenious way as discussed in dpreview forums. However, this lens really IS ideal for everyday shooting under normal light. I found no noticeable distortions and vibration compensation/reduction is superb, even at 15X (or low shutter-speed). It has spared me awkward lens swap-outs (compounded by my occasional clumsiness) to shoot under different conditions. Also, lesser lens swaps = lesser chances of dust entering camera. The lens has heft and its build quality is great. Even when housed in plastic, it doesn't feel tacky. A great economical all-in-one until you upgrade to full-format DSLR body.I got a great deal around Christmas'08. With Abe's coupon and Tamron's promotion, this purchase didn't hurt my wallet that bad. [...] !PROS: 15X zoom. Vibr Comp is superb. Great (not excellent) optics. No visible distortions. Very good build quality. Easily replaces the need of 2 everyday lenses. Economical if planning to stick to DX format cameras for a while.CONS: Slow autofocusing maybe a deal-killer for some (it almost was for me, very frustrating). Images are not 'tack' sharp at longer end. Zoom creep. Stiff focusing ring makes precise manual focusing a pain.

Just getting used to it but very happy!

The photo was taken at the last moment on a windy evening. The mountain wasn't really on fire. The wind stirs up the silica sand from White Sands National Monument and gives the evening sky an eerie effect. The wind was moving the trees around a bit; that isn't blur from the lens. VC used without a tripod.

When I first attached the lens I actually thought there might be a manufacturer's defect as it was extremely difficult to zoom. While it has loosened somewhat with use, I cannot recommend this lens. Most certainly it does NOT suffer from lens creep, on the contrary it took the full effort of one hand to zoom through the middle of the range. I intend to seek repairs from Tamron. While conceptually it is a good lens, its performance is not.

Bought this to be an end-all be-all lens. Which it is with it's range.

However, the auto focus is extremely slow.
You will find yourself missing shots constantly.
In perfect shooting conditions, this is not really a problem.

I am now a fan of using manual focus.
Just one move of the switch and in tough auto focus environments, I just stick with auto, which has showed very good results.

I have this on a Nikon D40x with the stock flash. The lens gets in the way of the flash when you zoom in past 60mm or so. This results in a black semicircle at the bottom of your picture.

I have not noticed any lens creep.

At ~70mm there is a tight spot in the zoom.
Not too bothersome.
